Having recently bought a 2020 Forester Touring and using it on a couple pot-hole filled dirt roads quite comfortably, I was excited in another review to see it tested on far worse terrain and do so well. But I am troubled why you and other car reviewers complain so much about the absence of a higher horsepower engine as if it is a deficiency. People did not buy it because hyper performance is not what they are looking for in a car like the Forester. What we have gotten is an incredibly smooth and capable performer on the road that can go off-road comfortably and safely. So review a vehicle for the audience it is designed for, rather than speed addicts who are doing the reviews.. Also, you malign the multi-screen display but as a user I find it terrific. I can see the radio info on top while viewing the map info on the big screen and vice-versa. Very nice. And I can see trip and other driving info on the driver view display at the same time. Yes one has to become comfortable with the controls but then it is easy to use.

@556johny5564 жыл бұрын
It made some sense when they first started using it, since anything was better than that archaic 4 and 5 speed auto they were using since the 90's. But at least those transmissions were bullet proof. The CVT is smoother and faster (those transmissions drove me mad how slow they were) than the transmission it replaced in Subaru's line up, however they are worse than everything else these days apart from *maybe* efficiency. So Subaru is in the same place they were in late 2000's with their old auto, if not worse.

@WhatAm1doinggg4 жыл бұрын
these CVT architectures (same story with Nissan) that have been developed in-house are extremely easy to tune to different powertrains and curb weights, in some cases with software only. so they essentially spend zero money per car in R&D vs other manufacturers that might have a new traditional automatic every 1 or 2 generations or if it's a 3rd party transmission like ZF then they're spending a significant amount more per transmission to deliver a driving feel that frankly the majority of subaru drivers dgaf about. also, since subarus are full time awd only CVTs can provide the max amount of mpg so subarus can compete with other fwd cars in mpg. the simulated stepping doesn't really cost that much mpg. also, as a side note, manufacturers use calculations to develop EPA estimates, the EPA can audit these claims, but the MPG is less of a real world testing regimen and more so just a calculation of the powertrain characteristics, software, and vehicle weight. consequently, this makes it even easier for CVTs to claim better on paper MPG than normal automatics.

I bought a 2020 Touring (top trim in the US) and I absolutely love this thing. Only two things really drive me nuts, the fact that you can't permanently disable engine auto start/stop and that you can't permanently enable auto brake hold. The former I understand due to emissions certification, the latter I can't explain. Otherwise the vehicle is fantastic. While the exterior looks are dull (as all Subarus), the interior in this generation has really taken a step forward and IMHO at the very least matched if not leaped over most of the competition. The safety tech is class leading now doubt, eyesight is fantastic. Lane centering works wonders on the highway unlike what Yuri experienced. The fact that it will auto stop you both forward and in reverse if it seems obstacles, is next level. The automatic seat/mirror adjustment based on facial recognition is next level, I don't know how we lived without. I share the car with my wife and it makes everything seamless. The heated steering wheel is great and heated rear seats is a nice extra touch. The only performance I care about in this car is the inclement weather performance, which goes without saying is obviously great. As far as power/CVT, it's irrelevant to me as it's just a family hauler for us.

I was worried when I saw IG preview as I love my 17 Forester Limited and was worried they'd trash it. As I always say, the CVT would never be my choice in a sports car or performance vehicle, but it suits this suv perfectly. I've never owned a car that was so amazingly efficient at holding speed in cruise over hilly back roads or highways as it doesn't have to mess around with Dow shifting a whole gear, it can do so much more with engine braking on downhills meaning less riding the brakes to maintain speed or suddenly going 15kmh faster than cruise is set just because you're on a hill. With snows on it's been unstoppable in winter and even on stock 18" tires I've trundled it down forest path and fire routes with nothing but a smile at the fun I'd had.

I know it is because we bought a Sport at the end of last year, and it’s great. It’s my wife’s car, and she’s in love LOL! 30mpg, all wheel drive, tons of space, rugged enough, panoramic moonroof...not too shabby. Oh yeah, and the easiest oil change I’ve ever done :)

What is sad is that Subaru has the 2.4 turbo regular gas engine from the Ascent, which is optional on the slow selling Legacy and Outback and Subaru doesn't even offer it on the Forester. If they did I could put the Forester back on our list.

Subaru has got to bump up the hp on the Forester, bring back the STi.
@joecromie78444 жыл бұрын
Sadly Subaru will never put the Turbo back in, they just prefer higher mileage and slowness with no options to get their Turbo engine. With a Turbo option, we would have considered the Forester for our highway work commutes and trips through the mountain passes.
@joecromie78444 жыл бұрын
@david chappel So true, Subaru only wants mpg's nowadays, so forget about anymore hp. For them the base engine is plenty for enough people, so no need for an optional engine for those of us that require more hp.

adequate power, comfortable, lots of room for a family, secure, easy to work on for the shade tree mechanic. we have the '16 outback with the ONE critical feature that makes the drive tolerable...a 3rd F'in pedal. Its a real shame that at this point, there are no new manual shift family type vehicles in the market place- the type of family that has 2 adult sized teenagers. Thanks for the review boys!

I bought one last December and I love everything about it... Excellent visibility, nice long and wide panoramic sunroof, eyesight works marvelously well (excpt, it makes my heart beat faster when approaching stopped vehicle, like on red light) and I use it a lot. Love the crystal pearl color and best of all, I can start it remotely from cellphone app...no regrets at all☺️👍👍👍

Honestly you guys were a lot nicer about the Forester than I expected. I bought a 2020 Forester Limited last October over a CX-5 Turbo - I know you guys don't talk about MPGs, but that and the head unit made me lean towards the Forester. The CX-5 reverse and 360 cam was awful. And I drive like a grandma anyway so the Forester suits me just fine.

I have a 2019 Forester, and I think your review is confusing. This is not a Porsche Taycan, nor a McLaren. It is a car designed for families. Who cares about acceleration ? I chose the car after extensive research, and I am delighted with it. It is awesome in the winter ; is comfortable and easy to drive. The available room in the car and in the trunk is fantastic, and the fuel consumption is ok, as are the looks. Best resale value on the market ! Darn right it is better than you think !

I switched from a 2015 Mustang GT to a 2019 Forester Sport and surprisingly loved it. Its not winning any races but it isnt the slowest thing on the road (im looking at you PT Cruiser) and the the CVT still worries me but I have yet to have any issues. Ive gotten complimented on it within the first 5 months of ownership a boat load more then I ever had my Mustang in its year and a half. Plus I never even expected an SUV to be complimented. Ive camped in it in Colorado for a week and drove it on some sketchy 4x4 roads with its stock tires and its impressed me all the way. I used to hate SUVs but this thing definitely grew on me. For practical vehicles, the Forester is amazing.
@LT-jc4qb4 жыл бұрын
The CVT also had their warranty extended to 100k mile. I used to have the same concerns but Subaru has to be putting some faith into their transmissions if that's the case.

Jacob, your face on acceleration was priceless! 2 things I will never buy a car with: a CVT, and auto-shut off. Ugh. The auto-shut off should default to being off, and you can choose to enable it. Not the other way around.

I picked a 2020 Forester black on black Sport at the end of last year. 3 months in as of this post, it's been a fantastic driving car in busy Chicagoland traffic. The car can surprisingly take a 30mph offramp at 60 with little roll, and has a very well planted feel. The AWD system is the real seller, and I'm surprised this review didn't touch much on it. It could use more power, and the CVT is something to get used to. After a month, I don't notice it, and I quite enjoy the drive more. The car has reasonable fuel economy 22-29 mpg (so far) in urban, and high speed environments. The interior, driver's visibility, and especially the new LED headlights are glorious. The sport trim is the real way to go with the 5th gen Forester. Plus, there's already loads of great mods.
