The #KiaOptima was one of the most stylish midsize sedans about a decade ago. Unfortunately, the latest Optima was looking a little vanilla next to newer rivals. Enter the all-new 2021 #KiaK5 in both #K5GTLine and #K5 EX. Riding on a completely new platform, this sleek new sedan has baby #KiaStinger in the design and the upcoming #K5GT should put the rest of the midsize family cars on notice.

Quad exhaust for under 300hp?

There should be a K5 Optima trim level to kind of help make the connection easier for buyers

@@gtiguy9629 So? Has a lot more horsepower than a GTI. Why would a quad exhaust be a bad thing for a car with 300 hp? Just for reference an Audi A6 has 248 hp, Golf R has 288 HP and a quad exhaust, some C class models have 255, and the S3 288 HP. If those sport a quad exhaust I doubt anyone would be questioning it.

You should have mentioned the front legroom. The K5 and Sonata have the largest legroom figures in the class and have held that honour for years. It's an important factor when buying a midsize sedan. Great review, as always!

Definitely should have been done back in 2011 to remedy the millions of recalls. Extra maintenance is the key. That's why people say money pits, like all direct injection engines. Severe driving conditions section on the owners manual is a decent place to start, on how often maintenance on GDI engines need; they need extra care, extra expenses, and attention.

Kia has been using the “K” in other markets for decades now, particularly Korea. What we know as the K900 was originally going to be labeled K9, but they relabeled that model since they didn’t want North American buyers to associate that name with dogs. I like the fact that they didn’t use much chrome on the front end. The blacked out grill looks good.

Both trims have their perks, the EX is more 'luxury' and ever so slightly subdued on the outside. Gt-Line is more that sporty look. I got the latter due to awd. I'm not mad I couldn't get an EX, I do like the Gt-Line styling. Though that red is pretty (and I'm not a red person) I got the blue... I get compliments all the time on how pretty it is. People are genuinely shocked when they discover its a Kia. And further shocked that my awd Gt-Line with the premium package was a tickle under $31k. To me its fully f-ing loaded. Only thing I honestly think it misses is cooled seats. Wide open the consensus is its nearly as quick as my last car, 2.0 awd Fusion. I get 4-5 more mpg's too. Around town it feels more snappy/peppy than the Fusion was. My first two tanks are shaping up at 32 mpg commuting.

I find it interesting that your tester does not offer rain sensing wipers. Here in Canada, all but the base LX trim offers it. Plus 12.3 inch TFT Instrument Cluster, HUD, Auto power folding exterior mirrors, heated windshield and heated washer nozzles are blessedly offered in Canada. I suspect the GT trim with its 290 horses and 311 Ib .ft at 1650 RPM will cannibalize sales from the Stinger, it's almost $10000 price differential (compared to the GT Ltd Stinger) for a very feature rich package (the Stinger has, to its credit, 75 more horses, LSD and fancy Nappa Quilted seats).

A number of comments here about the "de-contenting" (cost cutting) of the North American K5 vs the Korean version. Some comments. It's not unusual for a manufacturer to offer a better equipped model in their home market where they have a "home field" advantage in terms of sales and less competition from rival brands. For example, GTI owners (of which I'm one) have long complained that the US version of VW's iconic hatch have fewer features and options than consumers in Europe receive. What they don't object to is that a top trim fully loaded Autobahn version of a GTI in the US has an MSRP well under $40,000 while an Autobahn GTI in Europe has an MSRP well over $50,000 (at current exchange rates.) When a manufacturer specs a vehicle for a particular national market they take into account production costs that may well differ from one country to another. (The K5 sold in Korea is produced there. The North American K5 is built in Georgia.) But even more important is the price point established by rival vehicles. The North American K5 must compete against the Accord, Camry, and Altima. Sales of just those three vehicles were nearly 500,000 in the US in 2019. In Korea sales of all models of all Japanese brands amounted to about 36,000 vehicles. Even European luxury brands far outsell mainstream Japanese brands in Korea. Thus, KIA (and Hyundai) offer vehicles in Korea that are budget alternatives to European luxury brands. In North America, on the other hand, the far more important competition comes from mainstream Japanese vehicles. And despite KIA's vastly improved reputation in terms of quality and overall appeal it's still important for the brand to offer vehicles with a "value proposition" equal to or better than their Japanese rivals. A fully loaded top trim Camry V6 XSE has an MSRP (with delivery) of $38,915 and a fully loaded Accord 2.0L turbo Touring models has an MSRP of $37,481 (according to the "build and price" websites for each model.) The base price (MSRP) of the forthcoming K5 GT is far less, $31,455 with the same 2.5L tubo engine as the base Genesis G80 and an 8 speed dual clutch transmission. However, it lacks a number of features offered on the on a fully loaded Camry or Accord. For an appropriate comparison a $4000 GT1 option package with a boatload of features can be added. It includes LED headlights, ventilated front row seats, a 10-way power adjustable passenger seat, a leather wrapped steering wheel and gear shift, a 10.25 infotainment screen, embedded navigation, voice recognition, bluetooth wireless and multi-device audio streaming support, Sirius XM, a 12 speaker Bose Audio system, a navigation based smart cruise control, lane keeping assist, "safe exit" assist, and parking distance and collision avoidance assist. At $4K it's a hefty option package but the resulting MSRP of $35,455 is still significantly less than either the Accord ($2K) or the Camry ($3.5K) I'm not sure how close it comes in terms of features to the Korean version of K5 but it largely matches the features and options of the Camry and Accord. And those are the comparisons that matter to KIA and their dealers. It's worth noting, by the way, that lower trims of the K5 also include option packages that significantly increase both the features and the price of those models. Even recognizing that MSRP's are not necessarily the best guide to real world transaction prices, it's worth examining KIA's "build and price" website in detail to understand what is and what is not included at each trim level and the option packages available.

Some will be disappointed that AWD will not be available on the K5 GT. But it's not a surprising decision and it's the same pattern followed by Toyota and Nissan in the "performance" versions of the Camry and Altima. Toyota says fewer than 5% of Camrys are sold with the V6 engine. Even if offering AWD increased the sales of those models by 10%, a very, very optimistic estimate, it would amount to fewer than 1700 vehicles per year (based on 2019 sales) and probably far less given the current economic climate and pandemic impacts. Though models like the TRD and other V6 model Camrys and the Nissan Altima SR VC-turbo are popular with KZbin fan boys they don't sell well and adding AWD won't help much if at all. In the case of the K5 GT, there's another especially compelling reason not to offer AWD on the model. Based on the minimum $2100 premium KIA charges for AWD on the K5, adding it to the GT model would raise the MSRP of a fully loaded version to $35,455 to $37,555 making its MSRP a few dollars more than a top trim Accord 2.0L Touring model. ($37,481). Even though the Accord doesn't offer AWD KIA would be hesitant to price their midsize sedan more than an Accord under any circumstances.

I personally like the new Sonata better. Yes, the style is polarizing and arguably not as attractive as K5 but it is loaded with more features: Smart Park, digital key, digital instrument cluster, 360 camera, blind spot cameras, touch button gear selector. I am upset that Kia did not bring the Korean spec K5 to the USA. Koren spec has all of the tech features I mentioned except it has a dial knob shift selector instead of touch button.
@stephenhendricks103
@stephenhendricks103 3 жыл бұрын
The reason KIA has retired the Optima moniker in North America is fairly straightforward. The K5 designation is not new. It has been applied to KIA's midsize sedan in Korea for the last 15 years. There it is part of KIA's overall naming practice for most of their sedans including the K3 (Forte in North America), K7 (Cadenza), and K9 (K900). The K9 name would probably be used in North America if it didn't evoke images of their prestige sedan as a "dog." The "Optima" designation was also introduced in North America in 2005, the same year as K5 was adopted in Korea. That was in the days when the KIA brand was seen in North America as a cheaper knockoff of a Japanese brand. So KIA apparently believed a catchy moniker without as strong a link to a Korean model was an advantage for the "Optima." As KIA's overall brand recognition and reputation for quality has improved in recent years however, there is no longer a need to separate the Optima from KIA's corporate naming convention. In fact, KIA apparently believes there is a marketing advantage in adopting a name used internationally as it attempts to compete more directly with the Camry, Accord, and Altima with a significantly redesigned midsize sedan. After all, while the Optima nameplate has been used in the US for 15 years, it's not as if it has significant cache in the marketplace. If the K5 is a success, I suspect the Cadenza and the Forte may be renamed in forthcoming generations.

Actually, the K5 was optimized for customers in Asia where sedans reign supreme. They don't expect to sell very many in the US but ship them over anyway because it expands their market a bit. In fact, this was always called the K5 in Korea so they just gave up on designing a sedan with the US in mind at all.

Do you know why Korean cars are hot nowadays? They spend money where it counts. Not just superficial areas like interior design with cheap materials and horsepower and whatnot... profit margin on their cars are very low compared to other car makers. Toyota was the most profitable car company in 2019.

Redline has not done the homework and should have done more research on the review 0:50, the original Kia Optima has discontinued when Kia launched K5 back in 2011 (Optima in US) but Kia kept the name Optima in U.S market instead of changing to K5 but the real name of Optima from 2011, entirely new model designed by Peter Schreyer, was actually K5 so Kia finally applied correct name to Optima in U.S market.

The Kia K5 could have been made into a way more agile and better perfoming car by: 1. Giving it a proper Frt Longitudinal RWD Setup 2. Giving it a proper Sedan side profile... 3. Delete the totally unnecessary and extremely heavy Sunroof - Minus 20 - 30 kg The Kia Stinger could have been made way more agile and way faster by putting it on a diet by deleting all the unneccessary components below: 1. Delete the stupidly heavy Tailgate and replace it with a proper Bootlid and make it a proper Sports Sedan - Minus 10 - 15 Kg 2. Delete the totally unnecessary and extremely heavy Sunroof and replace it with a Carbon Fibre Roof - Minus 20 - 30 Kg 3. Delete the ugly Rear Quarter panel Reflectors - Minus Ugliness 4. Redesign the Headlights by making it it a little more elegant by removing the unneccessary downward, outer kink... - Minus Ugliness 5. Change the Steering wheel design a little - Minus blandness 6. Add Wood trim to the Interior design - Minus blandness

DeCapito Family I’m pretty sure the badge in Korea is the same as everywhere else KIAs are sold: www.kia.com/kr/main.html The Stinger and the Mohave models have separate badging in Korea, but it is those two models’ badging, not the manufacturer’s brand. Kia has filed for a new logo mark worldwide but it is anticipated to be only for their upcoming full-electric vehicles only.
