The #HyundaiKona has been a huge hit for #Hyundai since it came out and while the Kona N is still the quickest offering in the lineup, buyers looking for the most powerful version can still get a #KonaElectric. It removes the gas engine for a 64 kWh battery pack and nearly 300 lb-ft of torque. The result is about 258 miles of range and a less expensive price versus the Ioniq 5.

I have the fully loaded model of this car. I have been driving it for about 2 months, and I can’t say enough things about how much I love it. I was really worried I’ll miss my manual stick shift Elantra GT but the agility of this small crossover has won me over. I get about 430-450km range in Canadian summer weather, mixed driving - lots of highway trips. The charging isn’t bothering me at all, especially if you quickly plug-in for 30 min at a fast charging station. Gives you enough time to get out, grab a coffee, stretch your legs and grab a snack. People are rushing everywhere these days, it’s nice to stop and enjoy some quality time while you wait for your charge to finish. Overall, I highly recommend this car for its price, features, and the fact that gas prices are simply ridiculous.

I've been daily driving a 2020 Kona EV for a year now and I'll never go back, it's so much better than having to stop to get gas constantly. I don't remember the last time I even went to a gas station. It's also hilarious in sport mode with traction control off, it'll do burnouts at 30 mph if you punch it lol. Don't let the quoted 0-60 time fool you, that's entirely due to the rock hard tires on it for range purposes. It's very much a hot hatch as well as being massively practical. It's a 10/10 commuter car. Range is a legit 250 miles at 80 mph- I commute 100 miles a day on the highway and that's real world. At that speed you get about 3.8 miles per KWH. In the city though it averages about 6 miles per KWH, which means if you drive around town with high regen the range is well over 300 miles. Hyundai's range quote is worst case scenario. AC drops the range about 15 miles on a full charge. Never used the heat, live in LA. As for his criticism of the charge port, hard disagree there- this is a city car and the front charge port is much, much better for apartment parking space charging and public charging in general because a lot of apartments don't let you back into your parking spot so a rear charger requires a super long cable, and a side mounted one adds a bunch of width to your car- a problem in tight city parking. Front charging should be standard on everything imo for usability reasons.

I’ve never ised the heat or driven it in the winter, this has been my experience driving it as a commuter car in Los Angeles. I had to sell my beloved 2013 Audi A4 2.0 TDI this spring due to the London ULEZ expansion. I purchased a dealer's 2022 KONA Ultimate edition demo and absolutely love the car. 80 mile round trip to work every day on the motorways at 70 mph, it only takes a maximum of 12 hours to top it up on slow charge over night to 80%. The phone app to schedule charging to take advantage of the off-peak electricity hours is a huge bonus because my work schedule varies and I can schedule the next charge while at work. Apple Carplay, live weather and traffic updates, live charge point info, and other BlueLink features make the car fun and safe to drive.

Very good and balanced review. I own Kona EV 2022 for 6 months. In my country (Indonesia), only the 39kWh version is available, but it is really adequate for my daily needs. The Indonesian version has only 4:3 entertainment display, as opposed to 16:9 display seen in your video. However mine has wireless CarPlay, so it is a plus for me.

I drive the Kona ev for 6 months and I’m heavy footed especially this 6 second to 60 car. Easily I get 260-290 miles on a charge. My wife drives it after 2 days a full charge shows 320 miles and it does that realistically. If any of u question it, I’ll send you stats and pics of the range VS real time Odometer data.

"When I finally parked it(Bolt) at my home charging station, it had gone 322 miles on a single charge. Not bad for a car rated at 238 miles per charge. Even more impressive was the fact that I didn't really try very hard to get that many miles out of it. I spent plenty of time in traffic, which helped, but there were a few sections that I was moving along at 65-70 mph as well. No matter how you look at it, 322 miles out of a Bolt is pretty impressive." - Ed Hellwig Edmund's

The reason for so much tire slipping is not because of it being FWD. that is part of the problem, but the larger issue is the eco tires they use to maximum range and have low rolling resistance. If you put grippy and wider tires, I’m sure the car can hit 60 in under 6 seconds, but range would decrease

My Kona Electric Ultimate - in the UK - gets 320 miles per charge, driving reasonably, but not super frugally. For the money, it's ridiculously good value, with every extra added in, like heated rear seats, radar controlled cruise control, auto lane keeping, collision avoidance (auto breaking), head-up display, auto lights & wipers, tyre pressure monitor & excellent 8 speaker stereo system. The Michelin Primacy low resistance tyres help get the 300+ range, but the wheels do struggle for grip if you really put your foot down, but it still gives plenty of enjoyment. The warranty is excellent - 5 years unlimited, and 8 years 125,000 miles for the battery. In terms of value, it's an excellent choice. In fact, 1 year old electric Kona's with around 10k miles are selling for almost as much as a brand new model - the 8 month waiting period will do that!!

I have an owner of 2019 EV Kona and I must say that I have been looking around for a replacement. I have been looking at various brands but this particular car seems to sit very nicely budget wise between them much more expensive Luxury EV Sinclair in the ionic five in the teslas and well above the budget priced any Chinese models. Having said that there are a few major shortcomings like the room in the back the lack of over the air update the fairly anaemic design but I must say online in the main that the build quality is excellent and material choice is pretty good and should be taken in the round given that it’s budget price. Having said that I did splurge out some money and replaced the tyres with some Mitchell e-primacy

Great review was wondering about this little EV and with my budget not including luxury pricing ($40k+, like the rest of about 90% of Americans), was really curious about it. With Hyundai opening up their EV plant in the U.S. towards the end of 2024, if they make the Kona EV here (bit of an if) it looks like they could restore the $7500 purchase credit and would put it squarely in mass market price range - basically by itself (with the Bolt & Leaf dropping out). This would also be one of the few car / suv EV's actually made in the U.S. if they do that (Tesla and VW being the other two). GM / Ford make their non truck EV's south of the border at this point.

The problem with this kona electric version tested is it has Nexen Tryes with are focussed on economy and have poor grip hence the wheels spinning. A you tube video by a past editor of two very credible Australian car magazines on a long term review replaced the Nexen tyres with Michelin Pilot Sports 4 tyres that transformed the kona's grip, handling and breaking performance significantly with a minor drop in the range. I note current (2022) models are now usually fitted with Michelin Primacy tyres which also very significantly improve grip and handling.

Nice review and thank you for sharing, I enjoy watching this sort of content. That said, I keep hearing "it's a lower end vehicle". No, it's not. If you want Bently level panache, then prepare to spend several hundred large to get that level of trim. The Kona is squarely in, and above IMHO, the fit and finish of other vehicles in this price range. We had a 2017 Kona BEV and the family absolutely loved it and never focused on (noticed?) the plastic trim, or whatever, that is continually called out. It was comfortable and never cheap or tacky feeling. Again, IMHO. I also did not find the vehicle particularly small. Maybe that's just me. The observation is dead on about the tires and power. The Kona EV can be over powered for its size, suspension, and wheels. If doing 20-ft burn outs is your idea of a good time, the Kona EV has you covered. If you want to go canyon carving, then not so much; the suspension and tires can't keep up. It's very light and 'flickable'; feels like a skate board; torque on demand; great fun. The Sport mode is serious overkill. Eco mode alone is great fun and Eco+ mode doesn't provide enough extra mileage to be worth it, IMO. If a buyer can actually get their hands on one, the Kona EV is a no-brainer IMHO. A fantasitc entry into the the BEV world and I'd put it up against most any other BEV if they want a light, power oriented and nicely appointed vehicle in this price range. Be prepared to install a level 2 (30 - 50 amp) charger at home as charge time at 120 v is prohibitively long. If you are a road tripper, then Tesla still wins for its SuperCharger network, not so much its cars (anymore). Again, thank you for providing your insights and observations of new vehicles on your channel for all to view. Even if it gets my dandur up ;-)

Why is wireless CarPlay so important? Is it that hard to plug your phone in?
@renorudiman
@renorudiman 2 жыл бұрын
I have wired CarPlay on my VW Tiguan, and wireless CarPlay on my Kona EV. The difference is huge. In wireless one, it automatically connects when you enter the car, even the phone is in your pocket, the connection is perfect and always on until you leave the vehicle. The wired one, yes it is NOT hard to plug your phone, but it is so fragile to sudden disconnection, for example in bumpy road, or when you dropped your phone during driving. So my vote is for wireless one

I wouldn't call this car an "entry level EV", at 45,000.00 it is not a cheap vehicle especially for everything that comes on the Limited edition. This vehicle has MUCH more tech than any other car I have ever owned. It is fast, fun to drive, very comfortable seats. I don't think the average person really cares if the dash panel is plastic or plastic covered with material so it doesn't look like plastic. Come one realists, most cars ARE plastic. Let's not try to make them something they arent. I get 278 miles on normal driving and with the standard charge (plugs right into the 110v wall plug, if you plug it in when you get home, it will be fully charged by next morning for work, that is plenty. There are plenty of fast charge locations if I ever needed it faster, or my electrician could run a 220v into the garage to speed it up to 9 hours of charge. I think the only negative I have with the car is that with the new face refresh, the charge port looks bad, it should be on the side of the vehicle or in some inconspicuous location.

Hyundai is actually doing pretty good these days with their EVs but a month ago, one of BMW official said that the world does not fully prepared to shift the industry paradigm. It seems some legacy automakers like Toyota, BMW, Mercedes really don't want EV era. Since they have power to lead the industry, ICE surely will expand its life span. And because of raw material shortage and chip shortage, EV prices are so high now. That means, the situation is not so favorable for some automakers like Hyundai-Kia, Volkswagen which have invested heavily on EV. Furthermore, Hyundai-Kia alomost abandoned their ICE department.

We need a serious breakthrough in battery tech for EVs to take over. Car makers can't even keep up with 98% ICE market as is now. Manufacturers know this. Government regulators don't. That's because government regulators are arrogant and reckless.

@@lkae4 We also need charging stations everywhere that actually work. Also what will people in cities like NYC do who live in apartment buildings? Additionally, Electric Vehicles actually harm the environment more even before they are built because of all the required raw materials that must be mined first. Then it uses coal to produce electricity, then the disposal of batteries is a problem. Recycling is not the solution either because it's too costly. EV's are a mess.

@@bigmacdaddy1234 Every word of your post is a lie. I've been daily driving my Kona Electric for a year now in los angeles. I have never used a public charger. My apartment parking space has a chargepoint charger. The environmental impact part is outright false, your recycling claim is also outright false. A dead EV battery is the same thing as highly enriched ore. The reason there is no large scale recycling happening yet is because the batteries aren't dying yet. My colleague's early Model S has almost 400k on it and the battery is still fine. EVs are not a mess, your propaganda deluded opinions are a mess.

I own this vehicle. I find it interesting that you consider this a "cheap" vehicle. The 45,000.00 pricetag for the Limited is not what I would consider to be cheap unless you are solely comparing this vehicle to 100,000.00 vehicles which would be stupidly unfair. For 45K you are getting A LOT for your money. I challenge you to find other vehicles this fun to drive with this many gadgets and toys. the other issue is that you tested the 0-60 when you did NOT have it in SPORT mode. If you had, you would have seen 0-60 in about 3.5 seconds..........so let's test fairly.

EV range being the biggest selling point has now transitioned to charging speeds. I rarely take long trips but I would still never consider buying anything that could charge at less than 250kW speeds. Primarily because technology is progressing so fast anything less will be a big sacrifice. Imagine using Chademo today with all this new tech.

I drive a Tesla Model 3 and this is the sticking point for me. I wouldn't mind trying out a different make especially for the federal rebate. But the issue is the charging. Tesla is consistently reliable on long trips in regards to expected charge times and speeds. Every other manufacturer relies on third party chargers which are really flaky on reliability and speed. It can add hours onto a trip.
