The 2022 Lexus GX460 Has A Clever Suspension Trick - Full Review

The 2022 Lexus GX 460 gets a revised interior which has been sorely needed for the longest time, but the most clever thing about this full time four wheel drive vehicle is what goes on in the suspension system. It's just one more reason why off-roaders love this bulletproof 4WD vehicle aside from its V8 power plant.

I think you skipped over the #1 #1 reason people love this vehicle. It stays out of the repair shop. Reliability is more important than a few extra cubic feet of space for some ppl.

Great job having your facts straight. I’m an owner of a 2017 with 2.5” lift, wheels, tires, body trim (mildly modded so far) that does off road trips. Many reviewers judge the GX purely as a daily driver and miss the legendary reliability and off road capabilities on the pro side. You explaining KDSS for those that may not be aware was great.

@@tirespingt with 34.5” tires now (since have upgraded) and Ironman 4x4 FCP lift+trimming I’m getting 14-15 highway at best and maybe 12 around town. My mixed is 13.5 this tank. Thing is… I’m used to heavily modified cars that get less than 10, so not a big deal to me. If you care about MPG probably got wrong vehicle to begin with though! Just bought the new 22 gx460 luxury edition. I love it, the ride is so smooth with that buttery v8 and suspension. Took it to Napa at a 1,500 dollar a night resort and it fit in with those way less reliable and way more expensive European luxury suvs. I don’t even want to sit in my 2018 Silverado Ltz anymore 😂

This is "the best" review of the GX on the Internet. Why? Because I want you to tell me your assessment which means your opinion, regardless of whether Lexus will be offended by the truth. Kudos! Of note, in the last 50 years in Los Angeles, I have never once loaded a car from the right side curb because I am always in a parking lot. Furthermore, the history of the unique barn-door is that it was originally designed to be used with a supporting frame for a spare tire (out in the Gobi or Sahara desert). I own a RX. The screen, buttons, controls, pad, steering wheel, side traffic alert lights (which must be the greatest invention since the intermittent windshield wiper), DVD player (shhh, nobody knows), etc. all come straight from the RX (along with the incomprehensible Graphical User Interface, I have to pull off the freeway to do certain functions as they are not for those easily driven to insanity). I love your description of this car "as a tool". Implied is a "wasted tool" if used for soccer practice Lyft. Important is the KDSS use as an anti-sway-for-a-high-cab on city roads & freeway. As an original LS400 owner, the Lexus V8s are built to last a lifetime, are smooth, pull up the long mountain grades at 75 mph whilst passing V6s climbing at 60 mph (no small deal and unforgettable when you've been floored at 60 mph on the grade from Bishop to Mammoth. The V8 design is bulletproof and as a dinosaur in a newly electrified 🌎 will soon be a much revered dinosaur. But us old guys like smirk with pride and a wicked smile. The GX originated as a Foo Foo imitator but has gained street cred by RELIABILTY UNHEARD OF IN OTHER SUVS (as long as you live where they don't have salt corrosion of the box frame). On-Center-Steering-Vagueness is a nonstarter for some! GUI for the insane. Stupid 3rd row. Offset by brand new updated Front Grill that looks identical to my 100,000 RX yearly mfg rate and LOOKS COOL. Get the Nakamichi stereo or don't buy. No kidding. Skip the auto-leveling. It's a 4Runner claustro-narrow cab so order with a light colored interior. Enjoy for the next 26 years like my 1996 LS400 engine which is finally breaking-in at 180,000 miles (LCDs are finally dying now) !

Agree with most but better ride on others , where ? It’s up high cruising at very good mpg btw on the highway and very safe and rugged . Not to mention simply the best Mark Levinson stereo and 2022 even better . I’m willing to pay the high cost of premium (you) in exchange for relatively little major repairs down the line . Definitely would go electric until Toyota/ Lexus brings them out . Also I can have my vehicle repaired anywhere , parts are easy to find . But you are right to be slightly negative towards the GX . I’m sure those presently looking for one want others to stay away . It’ll our little secret joy . Btw airplay maybe nice , I don’t care too many vehicles nowadays depend on ‘chips’ and how is that going ? I simply like to drive like the old Caddies and Lincoln’s . This is all that and much more .

I am the first to be a contrarian in a few ways here, but bear with me this is gonna be a long one. The GX's brilliance is its design and versatility--not simply its offroad prowess. That's right--its not about the trail for everyone! Most of these things seem to be entirely overlooked by auto journalists whose reviews of this vehicle all sound identical, so let me elaborate. The idea that if you don't off road with it every month buying a GX is a terrible choice, is not really seeing this car for all that it offers: its extremely underappreciated well-roundedness. Other SUVs and crossovers are not well rounded--they are like "mission built" machines. They do one thing really well and nothing else well (see Enclave, Buick or Wrangler, Jeep). Well, you know, I need a car that does a variety of things--not just one. And the GX might do some of those things worse than a "mission-built" off roader or family hauler--but don't denigrate it for that without recognizing that being well-rounded is a strength all its own :) 1. I need to *occasionally* transport more than 4 people. Not every single day are people climbing into cramped 3rd row seats--just when family visits from back east. Check. 2. I have a vacation home in the mountains. It snows. I need 4WD/AWD. Check. 3. I need to tow my boat. I want the boat to bigger than a fishing dingy. Check. 4. I need a reliable car because I have grown tired of costly repairs to my European SUV's complicated dual battery stop start system, failure prone infotainment unit, horribly designed/built HVAC system and car control phone app that just stopped working and couldn't be repaired at any price. Check. 5. I need all of this in a small package. Yes, I said small because the GX is actually the narrowest 3 row SUV sold in America and among the shortest. It only LOOKS big because it is tall--it is not a large car. In fact the turning radius of the GX is smaller than the RX. What is the result of this clever design? Three rows of seats in a footprint the same size or only a couple of inches longer than a TWO ROW SUV, and 6" narrower. Check. I could go on, but my take is: please name me another mid-size SUV that is small (narrow and short) with 3 rows, that tows 6500 lbs, is quite comfortable and offers unquestioned reliability? Fun fact: it is the most reliable car sold in the whole land--not "among the most"--it is THE single most reliable model per several different surveys. Of course you can name me other SUVs that have have better 3rd row seats, that have more fuel efficient AWD systems, that offer outsized towing ability, or are compact/small as an RX. But I challenge you to name me one with ALL of those things in a single package. So....if you're still reading--that's why I picked the GX for our next car. And did it after exhaustive research--from Hyundai to Honda, Volvo to Volkswagen. No stone unturned. Logically. Unemotionally. For reasons that have nothing to do with off-roading. That's all just a bonus (or not, I could care less). It drives reasonably well and offers better visibility so I don't buy the "car-based SUVs drive better" stuff either. My current Volvo SUV offers no road feel or interesting handling dynamics either FYI. The only thing that really sucks is the fuel economy. But like I said, it's not perfect at any one thing. But it is remarkably well rounded for reasons you don't mention. And finally--I love the barn door! It's brilliant. Full stop. Like icing on the well-rounded cake. Some of us have normal height garages we park our SUV in and cannot open the tailgate of an SUV without hitting the overhead garage door. I am tired of using my rolled up front window sunshade I keep in the back as a guard between my SUV's tailgate and my metal garage door every time I am unloading groceries. And then, after I've protected my paint, I get to duck under the gate awkwardly to get out all my crap. No thanks! I cannot wait to get the GX and unload my car at standing height like a normal, non-cave dwelling human being. YMMV and good luck to all!

I traded my 2nd generation Sequoia for a 23 GX460 and there's more practical space in the GX than the Sequoia. The GX provides a reliable V8 with much more comfort than the Sequoia and it feels roomy too. And I can park it easily. As for mileage, I live in New England, which is hilly, and I don't drive on the highway. If you're light on the pedal, meaning pretty normal acceleration in Eco mode, you can easily get over 20 mpg as a daily driver if you aren't in constant stop-and-go traffic.

I hated the barn door until I found it’s talents 1) works better for a tall driver 2) more privacy when partially open Ex: a surfer , cyclist swimmer getting in & out of his suit. A parent changing kid diaper. 3) With the barn door open and the upper window up, it create a canopy like feel for a chair.

I have a ‘23 GX and I find the gas consumption issue is way overblown. Are people comparing to hybrids? If you buy a Lexus RX 350 you are looking at an extra $1000/year in fuel costs to drive the GX? If that’s a big deal for you, buy a completely different class of vehicle. Go ahead and buy an EV or hybrid, I can tell you your fuel savings will be used in repair costs. Period.

Barn door on all Jeep Wranglers and you can hang aftermarket picnic tables in the doors. Barn door for when you modify it and hang a 33” tire on a bumper or on the door. When you also hang one of those 270 degree awnings on it provides a barrier you’ll understand standing under one with an awning. Parking in tight parallel parking spots are rare for me. The barn door has a flip up window. It does as you mentioned give room to stand on the rear for the roof. The first land rovers had a barn door but when with a split design. Overall it’s not a big deal. I have a 2022 and as far as the rest I wouldn’t even consider because of their poor off road abilities the GX in it’s price range off 55k and up is unbeatable. It’s essentially a plush 4Runner with a V8.

I was in a 2023/24 RX 350H and you could tell the engine is working hard when stepping on the gas pedal. There is no smoothness compared to the V6 and V8 engines. I just bought and drove a 2023 Lexus GX 460 Luxury and can attest to the smoothness and refinement. My 2019 Acura RDX which is a 4 cylinder with a turbo experience the same engine noise. This review is beyond biased to say that this vehicle is only good for off-roading use. In fact, I know a few families that use this as their primary vehicle to haul kids and cargo around. Also I’m coming from 4 vehicles within the last 6 month, a 2022 SQ5, ‘22 Tahoe, ‘23 Ford Raptor and finally my ‘23 GX. This vehicle gets better mpg than the Raptor and comparable to the Tahoe although the Tahoe burns regular and not premium. Look at the new model Tundra’s and GX’s and how not so great their MPG’s are despite having a V6 twin turbo. I don’t know why there are people praising him for his review of the KDSS system, he basically provided an elementary explanation of the system, which by the way is also offered in the 4Runner. The only design feature of this vehicle I think is dated is the rear tail lights and the turn signals which are incandescent. But all things considered I would highly recommend this vehicle for road-trips, daily driving, families, and off-road use. Between the past few cars I recently had this feels the most sturdy. When you sit in it, nothing creaks and squeaks. The interior is extremely solid and well built. The Ford was a massive heap of plastic, the Audi felt like one small pot hole and the entire vehicle was going to vaporize, the Tahoe didn’t drive as smooth as this… if you don’t believe me go give one of these a test drive. Not only that, the GX is famous for driving well over 250K miles, easily hitting 500+ if you so choose. Disregard this negative video and watch all the others on here going on about how this is the last of a great vehicle. Will I get the new body GX maybe, but only after it’s been out for 2-3 years and a lot of the kinks have been worked out. Even then it’s a well known facts that naturally aspirated engines are longer lasting than turbocharged engines.

Correct- it's because the engine is very old and inefficient while also being port injected. I have a 7.3L V8 port injected F250 that gets 13-14 mpg combined with around 18-19 on highway. Of course this is a "newer design" port injected V8 designed for a steady torque curve and pulling weight but that's 430 hp, 478tq vs the 301hp and 329tq on the GX's 4.6L. Given the cost difference between regular and premium it's ironically just as expensive to drive the GX460, despite it's 40% smaller engine, as it is to drive a 6,800 pound crew cab F250. That's pretty abysmal, lol.

(Ding!!) huge disappointment! I’m planning to test drive the Lexus GX and get a feel for it but I’m kind of leaning toward the new redesigned Sequoia!

Rewatching this video after watching your review of the 3rd gen GX Overtrail. We own two Lexus/Toyota off-roaders (a GX460 & and a V8 4Runner). It’s finally time to find a good home for the T4R, to make room for a new GX. The 3rd gen is a huge upgrade, but I wish Lexus kept some luxury features like wood steering wheel and the V8 (real luxury feature). A few years ago we picked the GX460 (as Porsche owner it was a difficult decision to pick the GX460 over the Cayenne). The GX is relatively small (for a V8 truck) which made it very practical to drive in the city. Today we still love our GX460’s reliability, ability to navigate the trails (and Costco), and occasionally towing our Porsches to/from racetracks. We plan keep this workhorse in the family for another 10 years 👍

The barn door is for mounting the spare tire on the back. Being this is a Land Cruiser Prado in all the other global markets, the spare is on the back rather than under the vehicle because it's just a far superior location for an off roader.

Took my 2016 to teat a bugout route with 8 other vehi les, mostly jeeps. The offroad capabilities were impressive. I ne er git stuck, 2 jeeps did because they hadnt switch to 4 low. Power was there, ride comfort is outstanding. Front nose clearance had to be taken slow to avoid plowing. I had standard tires that did a incredible job, needed series tires for deep sand. Unbelievable offroad vehicle. It will take you anywhere with some minor mods.

I agree with you about the door; it's surprising that Lexus hasn't changed it considering it's one of the few Cons on owners' lists, yet still a very common one. I think I'd prefer the bottom half folding straight out and down. One problem I have with the back window raised is that hump in the middle where the glass window catches. Anything you have that is too long and needs to extend out that opening will typically not lay on that and stay balanced there; it will slide off to the side. It also more often than not creates a pressure point there and necessitates a more involved method of securing whatever it is you're transporting. A couple of other design irritants for me are that the DAC dial is precisely where the Volume dial should be, the captain's chair cupholders are flimsy and just dare you to break them, and the touch pad deal is a little silly. What is so hard about having a dial there a la Mercedes? It certainly is more user friendly and can actually be operated by touch while driving. Navigating around the screen via that touch pad requires so much more focus no matter what level of sensitivity, etc. you use and the little cursor icon is quite subtle. I'm sure I could sit and practice and get used to it to a degree, but I doubt I'd mess with it while driving of course. So all this said, so what? I love my GX.

I love GX barn door. It is mechanical, so always works. You can open and close it very quickly. I had RX 350 before and it took forever to open and close that electric tailgate. Sometimes it would not open or close. I hated it.

We are thinking about trading our 2020 Wrangler Rubicon Recon in on a GX. The Lexus certified warranty is very attractive, but it’s hard to find a 2022 GX that’s slightly used and certified. One reason we are looking to trade the Jeep is towing capability. The GX tow rating is 6500 LBs so it should tow the boat we want to buy before moving to Florida next year. Anyone have any experience towing 4000-5000lbs with the GX?

We love our 22 model over the 19 model that we had. It's great on trips. One complaint is that the 22 came without a tow package which all previous ones did. Something to do with a recall, but we will never be able to install looking as good as factory. Aftermarket only.

On my 3rd GX460 since 2015 in that same Nightfall Mica. Love the fact that I had zero maintenance issue. It could be said since I've replaced it every three years and hence the reason for zero maintenance issue. I'm planning on the new LX600 as my next car, however, if GX gets produced with the similar V6, I'll be getting the GX again.

How does this suspension compare to Jeep Quadra-lift?🧐 Definitely do not like that barn door. Would be better if it was split in half. The glass hatch is great, should have continued to the entire door.
@ShiftingLanes
@ShiftingLanes 2 жыл бұрын
Quadra lift is air suspension on all 4 corners. This one is just for the rear. I tested a Grand Cherokee Summit with it and I liked the ride and feel of that suspension. The additional lift on the fly is also nice.

Big price jump between the premium and luxury. Depends on what you want to do, but if you want the adaptive variable suspension, you’ll have to go with the luxury.

There’s other things that go with the price difference other than just the suspension system, like better interior materials. So you have to ask yourself if those other things are important for you. Personally, I like to keep things simpler, so I would go with the premium, or even the base.

A short feedback after buying 2022 GX with full options: I didn't take it yet off-roading but I have to say, if your not into off-roading then don't buy it. I had SUVs from BMW, VW, and Mercedes before and they are far better in terms of easiness of drive, technology, speed, and fuel consumption. The GX is too tough to drive and you can feel the efficency waste when driving on normal roads. It is also not a cheap compared to what you can get with the same amount. So the bottom line, if your not off-roading then the only added value of this car is the durability and resell value, but that's it.. however, if your off-roading then it's a perfect choice

Do you think the additional cost for air suspension on luxury model is worth it?
@ShiftingLanes
@ShiftingLanes 2 жыл бұрын
I personally don’t think so. I’d be happy with the base model, but if you need stuff like multi terrain select and crawl control, you can only get those packages when you’re in the luxury trim.

This interior update, with the news that this model is potentially being replaced next year is what has finally sold me on it. First things I and doing when it's delivered is chopping the front end and putting a bumper on it, and lifting it to fit useful off-road wheels and tires. This is the luxury/utility vehicle I was hoping it would be for years.
