It’s easy to forget how miraculous the first half of 2022 was for Rafa. I’ll treasure those 6 months as some of the best time to be watching tennis. Between Nadal’s great escapes at the AO, the level of tennis at Acapulco, the epic matches at Indian Wells where one of the GOATs isn’t playing his best but just refuses to give up (similar to Djokovic at USO 2021, and they both lost the final), then to come to RG and hold Felix off, find one more signature win at RG against Novak when no one expected it, scrap with Zverev for hours of grueling tennis, and then decimate Ruud to win it. Just another case of Nadal telling the world he can never be counted out and fighting until the end. It wasn’t the best or most perfect tennis Nadal has ever played, he just brought the right things at the right times and snatched every opportunity he could.

@@Linaria-yl7sb Yeah epic match too, but Wimbledon in general was just sad. I was really looking forward to him taking on Kyrgios and felt like he had a decent shot against Djokovic as well. Love the shot of the year. I learned to hit lefty over a summer and it got pretty much as good at my backhand and better at some things. I've always wanted to see a top player incorporate it into their tennis. Given how dominant forehands are over backhands I'd like to see a player use it to take over more points with more margin without having to run around their backhand and get out of position. They'd still need the two hander for backhand returns and other situations where there isn't enough time to change hands.

Agreed with most of these. But you shocked me with best tournament run because I thought Carlos at the Open was surely going to be it. As you announced that award I was already nodding to myself because I thought I knew what you were going to say. To play that many 3 out of 5s for that length of time consecutively did it for me and the fact that it was his first major. But Carlos had the exacta on that award either way. The reasoning for player of the year though backs the theory that the year end finals are simply not worth enough; and have not been historically. It's almost a joke the way the year end finals are treated in terms of historical meaning of the game. But I can see your reasoning. I guess I might have given player of the year as a 3 way tie myself. Great show Gill.

Gill I disagree completely! I think he’d take his season as he tied federer for ATP finals, he hadnt won it in 7 years. In a normal year maybe but winning this ATP finals was as good as a slam this year to tie the record. Also he won a masters. A slam, masters and ATP finals (3 big titles) is about comparable to two slams in a normal year anyway. At his age winning an ATP finals is much harder than winning a slam. Hes won 8 slams since 30 and now only one ATP finals!

Detained and then deported from Australia, slapped with a 3 year ban from returning to Australia, denied entry to the US to play at Indian Wells and Miami, losing his #1 ranking, Rafa overtaking him the the Grand Slam race, rustiness from not playing enough matches, and the likelihood that he would not be allowed to play at the U Open looming large. Being 2 sets down to a top 10 player in the world and clawing his way out of that match required a great deal of mental fortitude. Gill:). Incredible show as always!:) I would say Rafa’s win over Novak at the French would be my pick for best performance of the year. Slightly ahead of Novak over Nick. Just because Novak is a much more decorated/mentally tougher opponent than Nick is. Plus, Novak was on an absolute roll heading into that French QF. And Rafa played at a level that we all hadn’t seen in ages it seemed on clay. Other than that, incredible show:)!
@tatjanamastilovic29562 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not, that Novak was shit mentally, you say he was on a roll just cause he won Rome title, but he didn't face Nadal, Alcaraz or Zverev etc in that tournament. He was no near his 2021 level for example expecially mentally speaking. His body language was really bad and crowd affected him a lot, it wasn't just the cheering for Nadal but the insults and booing against him. Some journalists that were there in the stadium, confirmed there were a lot of insults, xenophobic slurs and vulgar gestures towards Djokovic that night, let alone the booing. Considering he was coming from the Australian trauma and was under huge media pressure till that moment, I'm not surprised + he had Nadal on the other side of the net, the one that made bad comments about him in January. It all affected him. I hope to see a better Djokovic in 2023, it would be a shame if all what happened really ruined his career and Nadal took advantage by knowingly making those bad comments to putt off Djokovic even more. Let's see.

Novak should have been player of the year!. Not only the fact that he ended up with identical points for number one if Wimbledon had given away points, but he did so without being able to play in two slams and the North American Hardcourts journey. Therefore acquiring that many points while being able to play so few major events makes him by far the best player of the year. And another proof added to the pudding. With his limited schedule, he still ended up earning more cash than any other tennis player. Male or Female. And if that weren't enough, he also won substantial tournaments on ALL 3 SURFACES! No one had a Better Year by far! Sure Rafa won on all surfaces and earned the French Open. But we all know he only won in Australia because Novak wasn't there. Because not only is the Aussie Stadium Novak's house, but Nadal hasn't beatin Nole on hardcourts in almost a decade. Come On Man!

I'm a Novak fan but there are some incorrect things in your comment: 1. Novak wouldn't have same number of points as Alcaraz if Wimbledon counted, he would be #2 cause Alcaraz would get his points too. 2. Alcaraz has the highest prize this year not Novak, Novak is 2nd. 3. Saying Nadal won just because Novak wasn't there is simply incorrect and biased, you will never know that since Novak didn't play. You can argue that what happened in Australia was a completely political mess or that Nadal comments about Novak were bad, but you can't have the guarantee that Novak would have won the tournament. He was surely among the favorites. The fact Nadal didn't beat Djokovic in a decade off clay, is irrelevant. We all know Nadal can beat anybody if in form, he's Novak's biggest rival after all and in the goat race. They also didn't face each other that much on hard courts, last match was in ATP CUP 2020 team event final, they have more matches on clay. 4. Slams are the most important titles, Nadal had the best season cause he won 2 Slams, Novak would surely change one of his titles with 1 Slam if one asked him. Expecially at this stage of his career.

Paris was far more impressive. Poor pick from Gill

I may be biased, but I’d give Nadal vs Ruud the edge over Djokovic vs Kyrgios for single match performance. 11 games in a row at a slam final? I feel like it’s almost underrated because we’ve seen Nadal do it so many times to great players at RG. Djokovic played really well against Kyrgios, but he did drop a set. Also Rune’s Paris run deserves an HM for tournament run. I may have given Nadal vs Medvedev the edge for match of the year because of its importance. Alcaraz/Sinner was probably a bit higher quality, but Nadal/Medvedev was a great tactical battle, historically significant with Nadal setting the slam record, and insanely dramatic. It was an emotional match that shook the tennis world. But again, I am biased, and you also already used Nadal vs Medvedev for comeback match of the year which it 1000% had to be. Great video though! Always find these super interesting and fun to watch. Keep up this content man, it really doesn’t get stale, and I’ve been watching since 2018, I believe.

Can't say the same for the fangirls here insulting Gill's journalistic integrity and playing the victim because Djokovic didn't win player of the year lol. I can guarantee if Nadal and Djokovic switched seasons, those same people would be saying "2 slams>1 slam" and picking Djokovic for POTY anyways. I do completely understand Gill's points here though. Alcaraz/Sinner deserves the spot since Nadal/Medvedev was already honored in comeback of the year, and I'll admit the former match was a bit higher quality overall. Djokovic/Kyrgios may not have been the most dominant performance of the year, but neutralizing Kyrgios' serve on grass is very impressive.

Hi from India. Love your channel and your analyses. However, today, you painstakingly baked up a wonderful cake only to sh!t on it at the end. 😂 The sheer obtuseness of this just boggles my mind. You’re giving the best player to Nadal based on AO, something that Novak would’ve crushed him in had he played? When was the last time Nadal won against Novak on hard? 2013? You’re ignoring Novak’s masters win when Nadal didn’t win any this year? You’re ignoring the ATP Finals (basically a Grand Slam) where Novak wiped the floor with the top 8 players? Same place where Nadal got clobbered?? You’re ignoring that with the Wimbledon points and just ONE appearance at USO or one or the half dozen masters in US/Canada, Novak would’ve been world #1 for the EIGHTH time? An embarrassing AO, a FO against a deferential Ruud, and then crapping on every hard court, all kinds of injuries real or imaginary, withdrawing from Wimbledon so he didn’t get embarrassed by Novak, bypassing the umpire to shout at Sonego to stop grunting? Gamesmanship thru shot clock delays which became so bad that McEnroe finally had to call it out? Just makes me think coz I’m 45 and you’re pretty young. Are Americans just incapable of looking at data objectively and analyse dispassionately? You know what you’ve done? The exact equivalent of the ESPY awards which Roger and Nadal have won for 18 years now. ESPY expands to “Excellence in SPORTS PERFORMANCE.” It’s an English word - it’s called PERFORMANCE !! He did this despite being literally imprisoned, lampooned and lambasted across media such as yours, to come through that sh!tstorm and still accomplish all this - you know, just this single analysis made me lose a significant part of the respect I had for you.

True... I always feel this too. Westerners lack the sense of being objective and tend to lean towards majority or conform to politically correct more often than us. Gill i always believed is better, but couple of times i have seen has failed in containing his inherent WESTERN tendency too.

Alcaraz discussion flawed. Odd that his first half was better than the second half. Wonder why that is. Perhaps a certain someone was blocked from playing two majors and all Masters 1000 in the US. Total agreement on the Wimbledon Final - tears for Novak for his comeback, tears for Kyrgios for a truly great athlete and tennis player who may not realize his potential with a Major (I hope I’m wrong). The final handshake at net was memorable.

Hi Gill, admire your show and expertise, but taking the player of the year award away from Novak is just following mainstream agenda in a way. If they just awarded Novak his earned points where would he be on the ATP list? Wouldn’t that be something most impressive in tennis history? Does Rafa’s AO win has the same weight without Novak there? I am pretty sure Novak wouldn’t trade his Wimbledon for RG and incomplete AO.
@GillGross2 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Points had absolutely nothing to do with my decision. I treated Novak's Wimbledon title as any other Wimbledon title. I am not following a "mainstream agenda." Rafa is my player of the year based on achieving the most success in 2022. Simple as that. The circumstances of the Australian were unfortunate but I must take the result for what it is- it would be unfair to do any differently.
