Lots of reviewers complain about vents being adjusted through a screen being technology overkill but nobody mentions that by doing this they're often tied to driver profiles! You can share the car with someone else and every time you get in the car, the vents automatically move back exactly where you like them.
@Miinow2 жыл бұрын
I adjust my vents manually very often depending on my mood, clothing, weather etc. and it would be very annoying to do it via screen and then try to estimate, when is it blowing to the direction I want it to. It's clearly overengineered, same goes for touch screen climate control.The reason why car manufactures do these kind of unnecessary solutions is that they are often more aesthetic and make the car appear more futuristic which seems to be important characteristic especially on EVs. An average consumer does not have the capability to evaluate practicality at this level when buying the car so they don't really matter.

Of the 4 the most likely to get someone to loan the appropriate UNMODIFIED copy is the 240Z (also an unmodified 23-window T-1 would be of more interest to him than a Kombi / T-2). The others are "Americana" that is NOT PART OF DOUG'S AUDIENCE (the audience's interest, as measured in views, is on the new "supercars" and the high-performance vehicles of new and older that he is loaned new from manufacturers and old from customers and from the C+B listings). The only one that would dare to review some of those (not even the Traverse, which only Consumer Reports may handle) is Brian of "Regular Car Reviews" if loaned the proper copy.

This is the only thing I have ever questioned Doug, about. At the end when comparing the score of the GTS to the Turbo he mentioned that the Turbo is "a little bit more practical". How is that?

Well, if you want to drive further than the car's range, you can stop for 3 minutes and continue driving. Versus.. overnight.

One major design difference with Active Lane Keeping vs Autopilot that I think is worth mentioning is that ALK doesn't actually take control FROM the driver like Autopilot does. It's not really designed to be a hands off experience at all. Forcibly moving the steering wheel in a Tesla will turn off Autopilot, but in a Porsche there is very little resistance and ALK will still be active as soon as you release the wheel. So you can for example change lane and the system won't fight you and then resume afterwards. Whether this is better or worse is up to discussion, but this means that ALK works more as an assistance system that blends in and works in cooperation with the driver rather than taking full control over the car like Autopilot. Same thing when one gets into situations that the system can't handle, like a roundabout. In those cases Autopilot will show a warning and then turn off, while ALK will adjust the speed, indicate that it's paused and then automatically resume as soon as you leave the roundabout. That said, Autopilot is of course overall much more advanced than ALK.

The best thing about this EV is the fact that it’s not really screaming its EVness. Most of the time, EV manufacturers will make a good design, but they will make something look stupid or boring on the car whether it is wheels, steering, you name it. Again, I am not saying that this is perfect, but at least it’s not making its flaws obvious at first look. One has to dig in the interior or infotainment to find them.

I sure hope automakers in the American market begin doing more AWD wagons and less of the ridiculous crossovers. I can't stand not having any wagon options from the Big 3 or even Japanese automakers anymore. I love the German wagons, but they're way too expensive to buy and maintain.

This is a pretty cool car. My issue is the high price and lower range (compared to Tesla and Mercedes). I love the way it looks. But at the same time it feels like more of a weekend car than a daily driver based on the look and range. So you better be pretty rich to get this.
@computercrack2 жыл бұрын
The EPA range is like the worst case possible range you can get on any circumstances, so with normal temperatures you will get pretty decent long range figures very close to any Tesla with the same battery size. Charging speed is very high so if you do need to charge its like 22 minutes from 5 to 80%. Not a big deal. You can easily daily drive the Taycan, it's perfectly suited for that task
@csg27452 жыл бұрын
That charge port door is the most needlessly complex feature in the entire automobile industry.
@hdlmonkey2 жыл бұрын
I disagree. The EV charge port door is opened pretty often and for an extended period of time to charge. Having it recess like that keeps it from getting whacked as someone walks by. I wish my Mustang Mach-E had something similar but it has a big flimsy door that swings outward and many owners have had issues with.

All this 0-60 stuff is ridiculous, I want acceleration from 50-90. The same applies to Launch Control which is a gimmick that puts extreme load on both engine and transmission. I’m about to take delivery of an M5 CS and I will never use LC.

The screen on the passenger side makes the passenger more of a co-pilot if you want (and I find that pretty cool). Takes workload like route planning off the driver so he or she can focus on traffic.

I am sure that screens for everything will be seen in a few years as something absurd that "was fashionable" in the 20's (of the 21st century). Something like fish fins, aircraft-type controls, automatic seat belts, "pop up" lights or antennas, floor dimmer switch and so many other things that appeared and disappeared from the automotive industry. Having to look for the menu on a screen to be able to adjust the airflow is so absurd that you will end up driving with poorly adjusted airflow so as not to divert your eyes from the road and the risk involved, or having to stop to do so. It may seem cool and modern at the dealership, but when the kids or your wife are asking you to change the air several times you're going to curse whoever came up with such nonsense.
@computercrack2 жыл бұрын
Usually for 95% of the time you don't need to adjust it all all, just have the regular automatic do it's job.

@@computercrack I would love it if you could share a 1 hour trip with my wife in the car. (50°F outside ) I start the trip without turning on the A/C, I feel comfortable, the first thing she tells me is to turn on the air because she is "roasting", 5min later: Please turn up the intensity a bit, 2min later: Point the air upwards, it's hitting me in the face, 10min later: please, raise the temperature ONE DEGREE! (literally she tells me how many degrees wants, not an approximate, but X degrees) 15min later: Please close the vents on your side, the air is reaching the kid and he is going to catch a cold.... it seems like an exaggeration, but that's how it usually is with her.
@computercrack2 жыл бұрын
@@FedericoPrieto13 yeah I can relate XD but the funny thing is you can preheat or precool the car with your app so you can enter a fridge if you want coming from hot climate so it may not be that big of a deal. Temperature change can be done on the climate control screen in half degrees without issue so it's really only the fan direction you need to enter a separate menu for. And maybe, just maybe you can teach her to do anything she wants on her own using the touchscreen :)

I find it quite surprising that Porsche does not have the capacitive steering wheel since the corporate brothers of the Taycan Tourismo (VW Golf Variant R and all the ID.-Models, Audi S4, not the e-tron GT however, since it is a Taycan in Audis' clothes after all, Škoda Octavia RS, I think even Seat Leon Sportstourer), if you can call them that, all have it. Maybe it has to do with the alcantara?

My country's light transit transport has been using the dimming and on-off window technology for more than 5 yrs. Every time the train passed by some nearby residential area, the window dimmed immediately. Porsche just brought this old technology to this car which many people have not seen too much outside. I guess this includes you as well.

6:24 - electric motor can't overheat. But the battery and controllers can. Because when you use a lot of power it means battery delivers a lot of power to motors. Not only it makes battery heat up, but motors controllers (basically computer build-in inside each electric motor) heats up as well. So Porsche probably did something with battery and controllers cooling and i'm very curious what exactly they did.

As impressive and unique as this is - it’s greatest downfall is RANGE! No Taycan model is currently offering higher than 227 mi in range. For the price you’re paying versus the competition that’s simply unacceptable. A model X plaid is a full second faster, $50k cheaper, with far greater utility, and creeping up on 100 mi more range per charge. The Lucid air is just as fast with more than DOUBLE the range (481 mi). At some point the prestige of the Porsche name has to give.
