The 2023 BMW Z4 M40i Is Sweet Sounding High-Powered Roadster With GR Supra DNA

The #BMWZ4 has been a part of the #BMW portfolio since the mid-90's, tracing its lineage to the old BMW Z3 and while the latest #Z4M40i shares the same 3.0L twin-power Turbo I-6 as other BMW's, this new #Z4 is also the basis for the latest #ToyotaGRSupra and while this is a BMW throughout, it seems as if Toyota may have given BMW the push it needed to make this model even more performance oriented that past models.

It's closest competitor is the Boxster GTS 4.0 which you can't find under $100k, and imo from owning a 981 Boxster, the Z4 m40i is better than that. For some reason people don't take it seriously and it's a shame because it really is that good.

The z4 is a great convertible, it's a damn shame no one really considers it. BMW acts like it doesn't exist and everyone talks about the supra. I havent seen a single one of these on the road.

I had a 2009. Z4 2nd gen, liked it a lot, but car had few shortcomings, at 3600lbs. Was heavier than most sedans, which made it kind of slow, sold it right after 2 years.

BMW did a huge disservice to the Z4. They didn’t market it properly or gave it any attention. Instead BMW focused on making their core models even uglier 🐽 It’s an amazing convertible, if not the best in its class. I have the Supra, but if I wanted an upscale convertible this would be the one to get.

Wife got a m40i last year. I never liked convertibles. A year later with the m40i im changed. The most fun car to drive by far ive owned. And it is way quicker to 60 then what bmw claims. Future classic 100%

Great production. Bought my first BMW, a ‘22 Z4 M40i, couple of years ago. I’ve been an Audi guy for many years, still am, but I wanted a roadster for once in my life. The TTRS roadster never did it for me, the looks were ugly. The 718 Boxster looks great, classic, but it sounds like shit now. The Z4 M40i was a great discovery for me. First time I test drove it, I fell it love with it. I enjoy driving it as my fun weekend car on a sunny day. And the sound of that in-line 6! 😊

The Z4 hasn't even been on my radar. I almost forgot it existed. I've been saving up to buy a Boxter GTS for years, but I need to take a closer look at this Z4 M40i. It seem s to offer very similar performance to the Boxter, but with a bit more luxury and comfort. Even compared to the C8 Stingray, the Z4 is cheaper...although less performance. The Z4 is the cheapest option of the three, which demands a closer look.

Boxster GTS 4.0 will hold its value a lot better, but it's significantly more expensive for with similar amenities and harder to get without ADM. The Z4 isn't as sharp a handler as any Boxster, but it's still a nimble and fun car and comfortable for all-day driving. The B58 also gets staggeringly good fuel economy whenever you're not hammering the throttle, and when you do it clearly makes more power than BMW's rated 382hp. That the 4.0 Boxsters have super-tall gearing is a bit of a put-off for me. Given the MSRP, I feel like the GTS 4.0 and Spyder should be perfect and they would be if only the gears weren't so tall for street use.

in the rear passenger side of the engine bay is the 48Volt battery for the mild hybrid setup. Convertibles shouldn't be taken through car washes regardless of the color due the rear rain rail limited ability to channel water also the detergents on the fabric top can be a problem over time. Plastic wrapping this color would save it. The M sport brakes arent the carbon brakes. M sport brake pads are around $250 for the pads. The carbon brakes are several thousand ridiculous dollars more. In comfort mode the exhaust when you are putting along the exhaust sound is barely noticeable, get on the gas and it comes alive and sounds quite agressively awesome. BTW, the back of the paddle shifters are covered in leather.

@mailidawgz5690 The Z4 M40i does not have any sort of 48V mild hybrid setup. The sole battery is in the trunk. And AFAIK the paddles are just plastic (no leather) in all Z4s including the 2023+ LCI models which only received mild exterior styling changes.

All amazing cars, but the Z4 was so much more fun to throw around! I went with the ‘24 M4 Vert though after driving that. That 510HP AWD comp hits different (for me)

Matt paint is alot of care and maintenance to keep it looking good won't recommend if you don't like hand washing car

The hand washing isn't a big deal as you're not already not supposed to run these through any sort of automatic wash on account of the convertible top. But if the paint gets scratched or chipped you can't do spot repair - that can be a big deal if you want perfect paint all the time. Would only recommend matte finish for those who will normally garage the car.

The car wash wont necessarily scratch the matte paint, however it will try to make the car glossy. So the matte paint will have splotches of waxiness. Just don't take it to the car wash...

Personally...I'd likely keep with a non-matte paint color...but if I really wanted that "look"; I'd get it wrapped in matt xPel. Too many issues with upkeep of a matt finish paint.

One thing I find odd. Back a long time ago, when you saw a car with black side mirrors, that was an entry level car,....but now, for some reason, it is wanted? Why? I'd much prefer body colored side mirrors. Also, I'm not a fan of cars that crackle and pop when you let off the gas. Also not a fan of red seats. Just my preference, of course. Same for the side mirror thing.

I`ve had a Z3 3.0i, a Z3 M (Clown Shoe) and a Z4 M Coupe, all great cars...test drove one of these and found it far too "frantic" with the turbo charged engine...I so badly miss the 6cyl N/A BMW motors, they sounded better and were much more pleasurable to drive and live with day to day...
