Are you tired of weird EVs? Do you want to roll electric but still have opulent leather, comfortable seats, and a design that doesn't look like a spaceship? Then check out the 2023 Genesis Electrified GV70. Silly name I know, so let's just call it the GV70 EV. The GV70 EV is quite logically the EV version of the GV70, but Genesis did more than simply swap a motor in, they completely redesigned the GV70 under the skin so this is no cheesy EV swap like, say a Mini EV. The result is that the GV70 has about the same range as the dedicated EV platform GV60, similar performance, fast charging speeds, the same V2L functionality, etc but it's wrapped in the long hood profile common to luxury CUVs. The only bummer? No front trunk.

My first EV had its charge port in front and it's still my favorite location. Sure, if you hit something hard enough it could render the car undrivable, but the same is true of any ICE vehicle. And let's be real here, I've been driving, at some times aggressively, for 23 years and I've never run the front of my car into anything. It's not an issue I'm concerned about. I also didn't have any issues in the snow, but that could just have just been my car or the fact that it doesnt get horrendous here.

Coasting is the most efficient mode on the open road. In city driving, max regen is. That's why in some EV such as Mercedes, you have "auto mode" which uses the nav and cruise control radar to decide which regen mode to use. No regen on the highway and variable regen in urban driving. However, it's not liked by many reviewers since the pedal moves accordingly all on its own.

The torque steering could be prevented by having the two half shafts the same length and thickness. If they are different it's very complex to get them to balance. Edit, hope this helps... Torque steer happens when the front wheels are not straight and you apply a lot of power because of the difference in angles on both sides of drive knuckles and suspension parts, it kind of feels like you have 2 different sized tires

I have tried to get into a GV70 gas in the past and just have not been pricing well as in terms of leasing as the residuals have been set very low making it not a good lease car. So I am hoping his EV would have a good Lease prg and get the incentive as well. I think you mentioned this will qualify for the full incentive as its being built in US. I didn't think of this until a few days ago. Managed a short drive back from the super charger in 11kw/h instead of 15kw/h and was shocked how much more efficient you can be if you don't rely too much on regen. Yes the Genesis can recharge at up to 300kw regen braking, but you have to keep in mind, that it still loses around 30% of the energy. Still better than the 100% loss in an ICE :D

Something to note: you can still coast in a vehicle with aggressive throttle-lift regen. I guess you could say it requires a little more finesse, because it requires you to still give it a little throttle input vs just lifting off the throttle. Using a zero regen mode (aside from the regen used when you apply the brakes) without proper driving technique _does not_ improve vehicle efficiency. The Lexus RZ and Toyota BZ are completely irrelevant EVs. They are EVs built by a company that hates EVs, and it is so obvious. I have to assume the only people who buy them are brand loyal and do zero research. Charging port on the front of the vehicle makes the most sense for where most chargers are located. It might not make the most sense for places that get a lot of snow or bugs. For where I live, my preferred charge port location is on the front. Next best location is on the rear corner of the car, like Tesla or the egmp platform cars. Worst location by far is far back on the front fender, like the Mach-E, Bolt, Taycan, etc. The Bolt might get a pass there because the front end is so short, but it’s an issue on the others. I’ve seen more than one vehicle with the charge port in the spot have difficulty reaching a charger. On my last winter road trip, I encountered a Mach-E that was completely unable to charge because the snow wasn’t plowed close enough to the charger and they couldn’t reach it. I had no issue in my Ioniq5. The Mach-E had to wait until I was finished charging so that they could park sideways in front of the charger, and then they ended up blocking several chargers.

At the moment the charging at Tesla network makes the difference on long trips. This SUV is slow charging due to limited internal to 400 V to 800 V conversion at existing in small number Tesla chargers equipped with magic dock CCS. Being low availability most people will choose Tesla Model Y. A few lucky folks with lots of working EA stations around them and Genesis dealership nearby will purchase this SUV just for commute to pumper their rear end in luxury while cruising to work back and forth in stealthy mode unnoticed by petrol head neighbors that they plunged into EV world.

Alex - Tesla's do have blended braking when the battery is cold or fully charged.
@EVBuyersGuide

@EVBuyersGuide
@EVBuyersGuide Жыл бұрын
Tesla calls this blended but it does not meet the traditional definition. Blended braking is when you push on the brake pedal and your pedal motion commands more or less regen. No Tesla will do this under any circumstances. What Tesla has called blended braking but does not match the generally agreed upon definition in the industry happens last year (2022) and simply applies some ABS logic to add a fixed braking coefficient when the battery is unable to accept the throttle lift off regen. This would more appropriately be called “blended throttle lift off deceleration” I guess, but not blended braking as you’re not using the brake pedal.

Great review, as usual. Your definition of an SUV and mine are different. It used to be that an SUV meant it had some decent towing capacity (over 6000 lbs). Now anything with a hatch back is an SUV. Genesis builds a nice luxury car so this is in line with their past products. I would not trust the Electrify America system for charging. Their past record is poor. Once again, EV’s are priced higher than their comparable ICE brothers/sisters. EV’s should be priced lower based on the lesser complexity of the electric motors versus ICE engines. Range is still a concern. I would want to see some real live world charging experiences to see if the charging times published are really what is in the literature. I still think the move towards EV’s at the rate being pushed by governments is unrealistic and will not achieve the goal of significantly reducing carbon emissions and there will not be any impacted on “climate” change. The original premise that CO2 emissions are affecting climate is flawed and computer models created to predict the future cannot accurately recreate past historical data.

With our current charging infrastructure, a 236mi range isn't good. In theory, yes you could stop 2x and do two quick charges on the same time something slower...say a machE could charge 1x. But in the real world that's not going to happen. You now have two chargers to find that may be full, broken, or not charging at full speed. Two chances that the station will be 5mi off the highway etc. In 5-10yrs range won't be as much as issue...speed will mitigate..but in today's world range trumps speed under most circumstances.

The Lexus RZ is the only EV I would ever think of buying currently even though I am more of a hybrid kinda guy; particularly plug-in hybrids. The power may be a bit more here for now, but the range is definitely not much better than the RZ to be worth it and good luck finding the optimum charging station on a trip. The RZ has also optimized the battery charging for long term battery longevity and reliability so when this hyundai gv starts to lose battery performance over time, its range will be much lower. I would NEVER spend my $70,000 on ANY hyundai/Kia product and I will never visit a hynundai dealership with my so-called 'luxury' car. Those aftermarket looking wheels are just too garish to be truly elegant except for kids, along with that ugly shiny plastic grill. And if that small rear window in the back pillar is a not as attractive attempt to copy the windows in the RX, I don't know what is. The RZ has much more trunk space which is important for better utility in an SUV and is more important than just flashy appearances. Everything here in the interior has been done by Mercedes so nothing really innovative or new. I have owned luxury cars with opulent leather interiors for many years and he environmentally conscious awareness in the materials used in the Lexus RZ is commendable. The RZ is far more attractive overall and future looking than this budget Bentley wanna be. The push button door laches that are more functional and safety oriented in the RZ are innovation. I don't see any real innovation here but I can understand why folks who are not used to luxury might be impressed.

Great review. Had a Tesla Model 3 and was thinking about buying a Model Y but test drove the EV70 and bought it. Very happy with it. Love not having to go to the screen for everything and much more luxurious.
