Let's go was waiting for this. Sometimes you need to remember these kinda storylines, especially at the end of the year. As big as it was then, I completely forgot about "cake gate," lol. The Cincy and Wimby finals were by far the two best matches of the year. I seriously can't wait for next year; I swear, sometimes the off-season just feels way too long, lol. I need more Djokovic Alcaraz matches. Still, even at the ATP finals, even though that win for Djoko was so dominant, it's still way more exciting to me than 90% of other matchups. I also can't wait to hopefully see Alcaraz and Sinner on clay; insane to me that they haven't played on the surface this year.

I so so wish someone new and young - other than Djokovic - to win AO 24 - as unlikely I find it to be - so tennis can start inspiring fans again. Not that i don't want to acknowledge the great player in Djokovic and all. Tennis needs new winners, and those who win from brave, bold and creative play which dares to take risks, to overcome fear and doubt, under key moment pressure, rather than drawing back on solid incredible defense thriving on nental edge built on legacy / experience. It is SO much harder, and nerve-breaking to win that way, yet would be far more satisfactory and inspiring for fans and tennis players alike (in my personal view) to see the sport flourish and be rewarded in that fashion .

@@ben1147, So, what's your solution?! Believe all accuser and punish every accused without a process? I have a problem with that attitude because it puts ALL innocent people at risk. DV happens all the time, so does false accusations, especially after breakup and especially when a child custody is in question. Zverev is very emotional and has a volatile temper, I have no problem believing he may have done some of those things. He may well be guilty, let the courts decide it. And if he is found guilty, for how long should he be suspended and after he serves his sentence for how long should he be ostracized?! Forever?! That seems like the plan because he is being punished even before the judgment. One incident tells me Zverev has a good heart. In 2021, Novak had already won 3 slams and going for the Golden Slam. It was Olympics semifinal when Novak met Zverev. Novak was a set and a break up but Zverev produced one of the most inspired tennis I have ever seen to beat Novak. When they met at the net Zverev appolized to Novak with really sad eyes. He knew what Novak was going for and felt sorry for him. I do not think he has malice in his heart and I hope he works on his temper and stays away from women for at least as long as he is playing because his career can't handle one more accusation- and he is now a prime target. I just do not want to see over eager fans eager for vengance destroy his career.

I’m so excited to see what won Match of the year. So many good candidates between Wimbledon final, Cincinnati final, Medvedev vs Sinner Vienna, Djokovic vs Sinner RR, Murray vs Kokkinakis AO (underrated), and more. I think Wimbledon or Cincinnati have to take it because of the stakes though. A RR match and 500 final will never match the intensity of a 5 set slam final or 4 hour Masters final between the two best players trying to get a statement win.

Novak - was the BEST year 2011, 2015, 2021 or 2023? Loved the MMA Awards. Loved the coverage and nuances. Best Nole matches were the 1. AO final because of the level of injury overcome. 2. Tie between Wimby final & Cinci final for drama & up & down flow & 3. The ATP SF & F for Novak's level in b2b matches against Carlos & Yannick. Think for me this is his best year as he came back from #5 before AO-23 to end-of-year #1 having beaten the 2nd-3rd-4th best ranked players w/+ h2h against each one! Thanx Gill. Cheers, Milan
@tennistimetiborhunyadi3934 Жыл бұрын
I think the 2015 season was his best. So much winning during one season, 4 slam finals, beating Nadal at the french in straight sets, 6 masters 1000 wins, nobody could touch him and he played more. 2023 is maybe more impressive given the fact that he played a low number of events and how much he dominated still. But from an achievement perspective, I vote for 2015.
@SJ-di5zu Жыл бұрын
Gill already answered this, although he answered from a “level of tennis” perspective rather than “achievements” perspective. He chose 2011 because he felt Djokovic had a more invincible aura at the time. I must say I think 2011, 2015, and 2023 are far ahead of 2021 in nearly every metric, and I think 2011 and 2015 are the clear two best Djokovic seasons. Which one is better? Well, he achieved more in 2015, winning 3 slams and 6 Masters + ATP Finals, and he didn’t have that indoor season letdown compared to 2011. But in 2011 he faced much stiffer competition; in 2015 Nadal was completely out of form and confidence due to his 2014 injuries. Federer played well in 2015, especially in summer, but I’d still take his 2011 form any day. Murray was probably about the same both years. 2021 is out of the conversation imo. Novak only won one Masters that year, didn’t win ATP Finals, choked at the Olympics, and his Wimbledon draw was pretty weak. 2023 was better, as Novak won 2 Masters and ATP Finals, but not on the level of 2011 or 2015 where he won way more tournaments.

Thanks as always Gill :) Interesting choice of the Knicks jacket! Although maybe it should be a non-issue - who cares what our favourite tennis host wears?!? :) Brilliant breakdown, I absolutely loved the Pecotic story, I'd never heard of that guy before and I thought I knew everyone who featured in major tournaments! What an inspirational story - everyone in Florida should go buy real estate from that man! I was happy that you mentioned Alex Molcan's INSANE comeback over Seb Ofner. Ofner just completely went to pieces - I was watching the match (from Australia late at night here), that's the craziest comeback I've ever seen in 20+ years of watching tennis! Molcan had completely given up and was just smacking forehand winners, and they all kept landing in! It stuck in my mind, it's one I won't forget in a while. Finally - I'm not a Novak fan but it'd be stupid to deny the greatness. The season he had, at 36 years of age, it's scary. It most definitely comes down to his fitness, he has to be considered perhaps the fittest 30-something athlete in the world, maybe of all time. The other night I got a mental image of Novak playing at 42 still, going past Karlovic (although I don't think Ivo was the oldest ever player - that might've been Ken Rosewall perhaps). *oh, EDIT: Rohan Bopanna is still playing (and winning) at 43, so it's definitely not Ivo. I legitimately think Novak could be playing top 100 level in his early 40s still. Maybe even top 30 level. Thanks again, I'll be keeping an eye out for any vids during the (very short) off-season... seems like the off-seasons get shorter every year.

And if we look at Djokovic’s record on grass the last few seasons, sure it’s very impressive, but he wasn’t playing any strong competition. 30:43 it’s easy to forget now that people have been passing around the narrative that Alcaraz’s draw was easy and that no one played well against him at Wimbledon, but Alcaraz’s draw heading in was brutal. Many had him losing to Jarry or Berrettini, then called the Rune/Medvedev matches 50/50, then said “Nole will crush him in straights.” Revisionist history has been strong this season. Alcaraz’s Wimbledon run was one of the toughest slam draws we’ve seen in the last few years. I’d say about even with Nadal’s RG22 (4 top 10 players, including world #1 Djokovic) or maybe Djokovic’s AO2021 (pre-prime Fritz, Raonic, Zverev, Medvedev? Although his semifinal opponent being Karatsev wasn’t too tough).
@marekwichniarek268 Жыл бұрын
Don't exaggerate, Alcaraz's draw was diffucult mostly on paper, in fact Berrettini, Rune and Medvedev didn't play anything special. Still great achievemnt to beat Novak in the final a month after Novak broke slam record at Chartier. Even if it was windy and Novak fu..ed it up in some important moments. Great win after 1:6 in the first set and great defence and offence in the 5th set by Carlitos. Much tougher draw had Novak at 2021 RG, since the 4th round against Musetti. Berrettini in quarters then was much better than at this year's Wimbledon, obviously. Nadal's draw a year later was maybe taugher, especially with Felix playing that great. But Zverev got injured and Ruud was not a competition, at all. So it was mostly about FAA and Nole matches, and surviving against Zverev in the first 2 sets. Still great achievement but if Zverev didn't get injured I guess Rafa - even if he had won that battle - wouldn't have had legs even for Ruud in the final. Yeah, I know the last sentence is only a big "if". Novak's draw at 2021 AO wasn't that bad, Fritz was really weak if he couldn't finish injured Novak. And against Raonic Novak was still quite far from his best physically but.. still beat him, as usual. He had tougher matches against Raonic when h was healthy and in his prime. Really, only Zverev was tough and I was afraid of this match and happy Novak sealed this 4th set tie-break with an ace, I guess he'd have lost the 5th set. Against Karatsev Novak was back to his best and the final was a masterpiece.

@@marekwichniarek268I’m not exaggerating at all; Alcaraz had a very tough Wimbledon draw. Novak fans keep throwing around the narrative that everyone plays “bad” against Alcaraz, when in reality he’s suffocating to play against. It was the same deal with Federer back in the day, where he was so unpredictable and tough to play against that his opponents often looked stupid. Gill himself listed his Wimbledon run as the 2nd best run of the year due to the difficulty of the draw. Jarry played an excellent match; his first serve percentage was hovering around 70% for most of the match and he made life difficult for Carlitos. Alcaraz put up an incredible return performance, which continued against Berrettini. Completely neutralized his serve. I agree Rune didn’t bring much to the table in the QF match; he looked extra nervous to be playing Carlos in such a big stage, but Alcaraz also was playing really relaxed and cruised through him. If he had let the match go longer, Rune probably would’ve worked his way in and made things a little tougher, so credit to Alcaraz for that. And then Medvedev just looked clueless out there because Alcaraz had such superiority in every part of the matchup. Alcaraz was completely neutralizing Medvedev’s first serve and his forehand was firing away like crazy. The first two sets were perfection from Alcaraz; last set was a little wonky on serve but he did a great job returning. And then the Djokovic match: stop with the “wind” narrative. Both players have to play in the same conditions. This is like if I said the Alcaraz vs Djokovic match at Turin wasn’t a good performance because the conditions were too fast. I don’t understand why people think “wind” is a good excuse. They said the same for Federer vs Nadal at RG2019 where he got crushed, even though Federer lost 5 other times to Nadal at RG so it clearly wasn’t anything out of the ordinary. In fact it’s quite incredible what Alcaraz and Nadal can do in wind. Ask any tennis player how hard it is to play in wind. It tests your footwork to the highest level, so why doesn’t Alcaraz get credit for his insane footwork to keep getting in position for every shot?

@@marekwichniarek268 Yeah, but that's Novak and Nadal, two of the greatest to ever do it; this is Alcaraz, on grass, who played only 4 grass tournaments in his life and then won Wimbledon. That is why I'd rephrase it and say it is the toughest draw outside the big 3, hands down, since Wawrinka's 2014 and 2015 majors. Both of which I'd say are harder than what Alcaraz had to get through. Nole messing up shouldn't take away from the win; he messed up, just like the hundreds of players who play him, during crucial moments do as well. The only difference is that it doesn't happen to him usually. Those two backhands are still gnarly to me; there was no interference from the weather or anything, at least during the second backhand. Also, wind affects both players, and Djokovic had over 15 years to come up with a strategy or adapt to playing in windy conditions, playing Alcaraz at 20 on basically the best surface for him should have been incredibly easy. The fact is, although I agree that his draw was harder looking on paper, Alcaraz winning Wimbledon was just THE most impossible thought anyone could come up with, especially after the French. The only thing that would make me agree that it was the hardest draw in recent times would be if Alcaraz beat Sinner along the way.

Long story short. Alcaraz’s win at Wimbledon was the most impressive win on grass since Andy Murray won the Championships ten years ago. Even more so because it was only Carlos’ fourth tournament on grass. People say he’s in a slump, but facts are he’s had an outstanding season and he’s only 20. He’s got nothing, but time to improve his game.

If there is one thing u want to be changed in tennis. What will it be. Casper ruud was asked he said he wished Rafa Nadal beat djokovic at d 2012 Australia open final. Me I would love a replacement 4 an injured player. Like at d Wimbledon 22, wen nadal was injured, Taylor fritz shud have replaced him against Nick kyrios. Tennis shud do something about this, just like tsisipas match against rune. Someone shud complete his set. God bless u

That’s a really good idea. If I wanted to change a match outcome of the past it would be either AO 2012 final nadal against djoker, like ruud says, or Wimbledon 2019 final fed against djoker, or ao 2017 final nadal against fed, or 2018 Wimbledon semifinal nadal against djoker

And what if the replacement player wins the match? What if Fritz beat Kyrgios? Does he move onto the final despite losing to Nadal with torn abs? Could you imagine if a player won a slam despite losing a match on the run? It would feel so undeserving and be asterisked immediately.

If it were not for cramps alcaraz would've easily won that match in 4 sets . Wouldn't be close

I like to think that Djokovic is dominating these years bc and when fed is retired and nadal is injured and about to retire, so his competition went down. Even tho Carlos and jannik got better and are really talented and promising, they are still so young and inexperienced that djoker was able to win against them in ways he maybe wouldn’t have against nadal. But in the end that’s not an excuse and djoker again had one of the best seasons ever and shows no sign of aging and declining. Makes me suffer a lot as a nadal fan, but I have to be realistic and give djoker his props. The competitive times between the big 3 unfortunately are behind us. But even tho novak has the best numbers , I like to think that all of the big 3 are the goats bc none of them would be as good without the others, besides fed maybe, and every one of them dominated a certain period of time, Novak’s is just longer than the others. But in their prime I wouldn’t say Djokovic was the best player out of the three and there are stats for nadal which favour him over djoker in the h2h like the GS and the GS final h2h and the GS played / GS won ratio and the GS final win %. So that’s why I say there is no singular goat and the big 3 are best players ever

you conveniently forgot djokovic's winning record vs nadal and fed......how unusual for a fedal
@marekwichniarek268 Жыл бұрын
You're wrong at everything, even at the slams played/won ratio. Go and check on Wikipedia. And Novak hasn't lost a SINGLE match at the slam against Fedal outside of clay since.. 2014? Yes, 2013 USO final was the last Fedal win against Novak outside of clay. So I don't know what drugs you take but I want to know your dealer.

I agree with saying the Big 3 are the best ever. I hate to see when "fans" start saying there is no big 3 and only big 1. They shaped the sport to what we have today. But there is one GOAT, and it's Novak. If GOAT is too subjective to some, then BOAT (best of all time). He earned that spot fair and square. I do get the whole "iron sharpens iron" thing. Djokovic is as good as he is because he had to play the most elite players ever. He learned from them and vice virsa. Also, the Carlos and Jannik need to be more experienced. That statement is only going to last for so long. I would understand a few more losses from Jannik vs Djokovic at the slams, especially. But with what Carlos has done and shown, he should be able to beat Djokovic, especially on slow and medium courts, or at least push him to the max. I totally see the need for more experience with Carlos vs Novak in the ATP finals. For once, Carlos looked basically outplayed on every level, and u can see the inexperience on the surface. To me, there is only one thing separating Novak and Carlos right now: mentality, and even that is getting stronger.

@@danmalic6688 i know , i didn’t forget, I was trying to make a case for saying nadal was better during their prime and my argument is that even though he has lost 1 time more in total, that came in a less important event as his record in grand slams is 11-7 if I’m not mistaken against djoker, so that in the important moments he was better
@randypeaple8533 Жыл бұрын
@@marekwichniarek268 I’m not wrong at everything, I have to admit I was wrong at the GS played/won ratio tho. Novak actually has 33,3% and nadal 32,8%. But the rest of my argument stands.

Monfils is literally my 2nd favorite player in the history of tennis, but there's no way Zverev isn't comeback player of the year. 😂 I know you're woke and brainwashed, and you can't give it to him because of outside stuff but cmoon.
