Toyota’s first fully dedicated electric vehicle doesn’t look good on paper, but after driving both the Solterra and the BZ4X, they both drive a lot better in the real world. It feels a lot quicker on the road, rides nicely, has ton of space inside, and finally has good tech. We’re not sure why the Toyota version is lacking some features found in the Solterra Touring, but we find this car to be a lot more pleasant than the VW ID.4, the Mach E, EV6, and Ioniq5 are more competitive, but the Toyota is less expensive.

AWD feels like a much worse pick for 90% of people. It's barely any more powerful (and lets face it, you're not buying either for the 0-60), more expensive, lower range, and slower charging. Why would you ever want to get that over the FWD? Only if you do off-roading (which is that 10% of people) would you ever want AWD.

People who live in snowy regions may prefer that. From my experience, only 2WD in snow doesn't work all that well in comparison to AWD. I think Porsche is the only one designing decent electric cars and Ford. But these cars scream “I’m electric” while keeping outrageous designs.

Porsche, Tesla, Hyundai/KIA, and Ford. Tesla has kept the Model S exterior the same for the past 10-11 years it's existed, and it looks conservative. These 4 are killing the other EVs.

I checked Gault Toyota in upstate NY on 9/29/22. They are selling these cars at $10k over list. They have two at ~$52k each. That's $62K plus tax or close to $70k and unless you are willing to buy this car for cash figure another $4K to $6K interest on a load. That brings the total to over $75K. Its not worth it.

@mosfet500 Жыл бұрын
@@rambotulip People don't realize how much you have to pay for these things. $52k, plus tax = $56,160. No one I know is buying it for cash so add another $5k for loan interest, that's $61,160 you'll pay over the next 4 to 6 years. It gets worse, now you have insurance for that car - not cheap! I got a loaded Bolt EUV, came in at $35,190, my dealer who I bought from before, gave me $2k off so it was out the door for around $33k after taxes. I put $20K down and will pay it off in the next year to year and half. I got leather seats, adaptive cruse, surround vision, Bose audio, HD rear view mirror, side assist, pedestrian braking, lane assist, power driver seat, sunroof, navigation, heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, wireless Android and 247 miles of range. Slow charging? I don't care, I've owned EV's for over six years, the number of trips we take a year isn't worth the extra expense. I charge from home on my paid off PV and haven't paid for gas in six years, the Bolt is a very efficient EV. Reviewers talk about EV's like everyone is running back and forth across the country on a weekly basis, hey reviewers super fast charging isn't a big deal, stop making it one! Reviewers aren't plopping down $60k to $75k for cars, I take them with a grain of salt, we're paying for these things. I don't want to be on the road driving around in $$60k car, especially when I can drive a great EV for half that.

@@mosfet500 no 52 was taxes included, lojack too (1k which i never wanted ), and includes car delivery which every car now has about 1.5k...ill get back about 3.5k in rebates maybe something during taxes too, but then 2k to install a charger lol...but this is excellent in the snow, wide and heavy and space for my dog, cant go with bolt otherwise, i put a down tp buy lexus nx350 hybrid
@mosfet500 Жыл бұрын
@@rambotulip $52k plus $2k with interest on a loan and higher insurance rates, figure around $60k when you're done. After rebates ($2k NY, $7500 fed), total cost is $23,690 plus $1,600 for my loan. Toyota doesn't get the fed rebate and GM includes the charger installation and you get an included dual level EVSE that's good for 11.5kW charging. I already have an EVSE I personally installed from our last Bolt so I opted for the $500 EVGO free credit. By the way my insurance went down from my last Bolt with GM's price drop. We live in the Catskill mountains which is a snow shed, rain shed area, I run Bridgestone Blizzaks all winter with no problems and I have a 600 foot plus uphill driveway but people think they need AWD. FWD with traction control is pretty darn good and you get longer range. Dragging around two motors drops your range which is why the AWD BZ4 has lower range than the 2WD BZ4. Space? I put a 350lb. granite surface plate for my shop in the back and drove 150 miles round trip to pick it up. I bought five 80 lb. bags of concrete mix from Home Depot and took it home with ease, could have gotten more in but only needed five bags. How big is your dog! Edmonds actual range for the BZ4 is 227 miles, they got 265 with Bolt EUV, we get over 300 in the summer, our 2020 Bolt EV with an estimated range of 259 did even better. With the 72.8 kWh battery it takes longer to charge the BZ4 from home than the 65kWh Bolt. I'm off grid most months of the year, the Bolts efficiency is ideal for off grid applications and at 1k lbs. lighter than the BZ4 the tires will last longer. I think you guys should stop listening to auto reviewers and start listening to people who have been driving EV's for years. Next month reviewers will be raving about some other EV but you'll be paying for your car for the next 4 or 5 years. This idea that we have to stay on top of the latest technology is, as the Brits say, bullocks.

So, the EPA range for the XLE FWD/AWD (is 252/228 miles) and the Limited FWD/AWD (is 242/222 miles), with a peak charging rates of 150 kW for the FWD models and 100 kW for the AWD models, so, DC fast charging (Level 3) to 80% (since Toyota didn’t say the batteries are LFP I’m assuming that 80% thing for DC fast charging, so, that 222 range is really 177.6 and max 252 range is 201.6, that’s the problem) is a little less than an hour and Level 2 to 100% is about 9 hours, no true one-pedal driving (so, Toyota is using regenerative braking instead of one-pedal driving to recapture lost energy while coasting and help slow you down, that no one-pedal driving, is probably why it doesn't have better range and will lead to faster brake replacement vs other compact CUV/SUV EV models), now for pricing, the XLE FWD/AWD ($43,215/$45,295) and the Limited FWD/AWD ($47,915/$49,995) note, prices included destination charges, you know the specs already, so, how does it stack up against other CUV/SUV compact too small midsize EVs, while Toyota strategy of not chasing Tesla’s RWD based layout like some others car companies is the big bet here, I said it needed to be priced under the VW ID.4, but given its list of standard features, costing more than the ID.4 may be justified, but the real problems are these two things, the Chevy Bolt EUV is cheaper and almost offers about the same range as the FWD bZ4X, and the upcoming Chevy Equinox EV with a 30k starting price, that vehicle is going to be a problem for several compact CUV/SUV EV models, at the end of the day, it’s basically what Toyota said they were doing with their first true EV, I’m assuming the Lexus version the RZ450e will have more power and cost at least 10k more, creating a Tesla Model Y problem for the Lexus EV, time will time, I hope that rumor of under 10k (7k) coming to the US this year is just a rumor and not true, typical Toyota isn't class-leading in anything but does just enough for its customers to keep coming back, the Model Y and Mustang Mach E (clearly offer better performance, range, and useable space, not to mention their self-driving tech), but you aren't really buying a Toyota for performance too start with (right), overall, does it make more sense to buy a gas RAV4 (about a 14k difference), hybrid RAV4 (note, hybrids are only AWD, so, the price is a XLE AWD, about a 13.5k difference), plugin RAV4 (note, plugin hybrids are only AWD, so, the price is the cheapest SE AWD, about a 4k difference) or the EV bZ4X, with the EPA numbers, you can do the calculation for breakeven, I would say it depend on your circumstances, but with its starting price, for most (probably ?, the RAV4 Prime or bZ4X), battery warranty info (what happen to that 90% charge for 10 years, thing) 8 years / 100k warranty
