The 2023 Lexus RZ 450e Is A Great Electric Luxury SUV In Need Of More Range

When you want a #Lexus but also want to go electric, the 2023 #LexusRZ450e is the brand's first-ever fully electric production vehicle. The #LexusRZ borrows the same platform from the #ToyotabZ4x but Lexus ramps up the power and luxury for their version. The #RZ450e comes standard with dual electric motors, giving it AWD, and 308 HP, which is nearly 100 more than the #bZ4X. Sadly, with a max range of around 220 miles with that number dropping to 196 miles with the 20" wheels, it looks like Lexus needs to hurry and upgrade the mediocre range figures.

While I agree the charge door seems like an after thought, I would prefer the manual door to a power one - one less thing that can break (and when that does, you are in trouble). Range is going to kill this; if they could add another 50% minimum (ideally 100%) it would be great. Needs faster charging too.

throw in some hills and temps in the teens, it's even worse. Just like gas engines though, environmetal impacts affect them. My 4xe has a pretty consistent 28 mile range in SC. Worst I've ever gotten was 22. My friend in PA has the same vehicle. He gets about a 24 mile range just because of all the hills, and that's perfect day w/ no passengers. If he immediately gets on the highway and goes 70+mph, his range drops to 19. If it's cold out, he gets about 17 and if he also turns on the electric heater he's gotten as poor as 13 miles. I'm thinking about asking him this winter to cram it full w/ 4 people and see if he could go as few as 10 miles on a charge (jeep conservatively advertises 21 mile range) The 4xe has a 17kwh battery pack btw, compared to this Lexus' 71kwh pack. The jeep also only weighs 500 lbs more. Based on KWH and curb weight, I predict this lexus getting best case scenario of 144 miles range, with a worst case scenario of somewhere in the 70s

This design pretty clearly shows that Toyota had release of an EV low on its list of priorities, saw the amount of attention they were being given by the competition, panicked, and rushed a half-cooked design to production. The primary intention is to have something on their lots to show their famously loyal customers and perhaps keep some of them who have decided their next car will be an EV from leaving the brand. It's a stopgap product to keep them at least somewhat in the segment until they have a competitive design ready. They aren't building very many of them and will probably sell them all, so even though it's not a very good car they'll probably count it a success.

This was a very fair assement of the car. Just purchased the luxury edition. I was coming from the RX350 and loved that car. We still own that vehicle, so it is a good backup. When I first heard about the range, I immediately wrote it off. After hearing about the free loaner program and taking a test drive, I decided it was worth another look. We typically take two road trips a year and knowing we could keep that mileage off the RZ made me re-examine. I typically do short trips around town, so this works for me.

Congrats, i initially also wrote it off alsl due to its range compared to Tesla (but i hate Tesla amd Musk) and high price.....but with the extremely bad press, its price has significantly depreciated that it is now worth it as a replacent 2nd car for my family. Glad to hear you love the car! I really love mine as well. I'm actually a fan of Tesla and did consider the modely Y. I think Tesla has superb batteries and charging network. The cabin, look, realiability and ride quality were the deciding factors for me. A friend of mine was buying a new boat. He couldn't decide if he wanted one or two engines. The sales guy asked him what he would be doing 90% of the time. He said "just taking it to another marina where he could eat lunch". Why would you need two engines to do that. With the Lexus it was the same thing. I probably spend 95+% of my time driving around town. I am having a level 2 charger installed tomorrow.

I get 250 w/mi in a 7 year old Tesla MS still getting 310 miles on a 100 kw battery pack…. 720 ft lbs of torque with 3.1-3.4 sec 0-60. Traded a 2015 GS 450h F sport that got a horrible 16 mpg in city, and barely 31 mpg on hwy……that was my last time dealing with anything hybrid from Lexus, at 125+ mpges routinely, it would take a lot more range to get me interested. They’d have to do like the Silverado and roll out 400 miles for me to think about trading “down” from TSLA to this. I want it, just shiny but inferior in so many ways. The slow charging is also a deal breaker. I’m in and out in a supercharger in 15-30 minutes

I think you are missing some points, for ex. charge hatch is not electric, well that's good, those things brake, where ever you have unneccesary e-motors, parts etc more chance of things braking, that's why Toyota and Lexus are what they are. In interior we have buttons, which people actualy want. The build quality is superb. But I do agree the range is poor to say at least, if it was closer to 300 it would be great. Looks like it's been a bit rushed into production, maybe they will improve it soon enough. Anyway I don't like EVs in general, would go for Toyota or Lexus hybrid like most people.

Why does it matter that much? I spend money on cars for refinement and this Lexus is refined. Most people are not driving long ranges and most Lexus owners are charging at home so they drive their 25 or so miles a day and slowly charge their cars up. Just wonder if the Lexus's battery needs to be preserved from 20-80% for longevity purpose like other EVs. If that's the case, the usable range will be even less somewhere close to 100 miles?😱
@mikethepups7742
@mikethepups7742 11 ай бұрын
Nope … from my understanding, Lexus says charging to 100% is fine. And in doing so predicts only 10% battery degradation after 10-years. Unlike others (such as Tesla) who “strongly” recommend charging to not more than 80% in order to better preserve the battery. So a 300 mile EV at 80% gives 240 miles of range versus 220 miles of a Lexus at 100% charge.

Let be logical, as is exactly what Toyota/Lexus are. Majority of Americans considering an EV are not wanting an EV to be their only car. Lexus studied this and is aware that most buyers for a Lexus EV are already Toyota/Lexus owners and is more than likely going to be the secondary or third vehicle but not the only one vehicle of the household. They are also going to conservative route as well as being conservative with the materials it takes to create the batteries. Therefore, they did not need to build an EV that will get over 300 miles of range. And for those very very few people that this will be their only vehicle, they are allowed to get a loaner vehicle for road trips instead of taking the EV. Everyone needs to remember Toyota and Lexus are thinking 20-30 even 50 years down the road and their worldwide demographics, NOT ONLY the US. It’s is not a race. It’s about conserving and reliability.

why cut into profits if people will buy what you dish out. Toyota only last 2-3 years have drastically changed their design philosophy because South Korea is becoming a quick threat. Lexus has no reason to improve until Genesis starts becoming a threat. Lexus has no interest to compete against the Germans because quite frankly, it is not in their design philosophy to make noisy cars for the sake of evoking emotion and also, no autobahn, why make cars so powerful you will never use that power 99% of the time in Japan or America? Lexus is just a reliable Toyota with a nicer interior and tuned for an extra 50-100HP to justify the 50% more price tag, nothing less nothing more.

Excellent review! Wow, Lexus is really behind in the EV world. It’s clear they didn’t prioritize it’s range compared to its competitors. This is for that affluent Lexus fan who has is 100% work from home, relies on Amazon to deliver everything and only occasionally goes to the grocery store bc the range is terrible. HVAC usage is a must in a climate change world, thus the range is truly unacceptable except for the fictional person I described above. Interior is absolutely beautiful, though.

I have been driving this car for 2 months. If you are charging based on recommendation which is 80% you won’t even get 120 mile with climate on. And this is not the car for you if you are a heavy freeway driver. It really is garbage. The luxury is not worth it based off how bad the range is. If I could get my money back I would.

If you are talking about efficiency, combined hgwy+city in SUV category. Only Tesla Model Y(AWD, Long Range AWD, RWD) gets more Le/km. If you are looking at whole bev category then only Lucid air touring and pure, Ioniq 6, Model Y and 3 are the only ones more efficient than this/bz4x. They match Model S, EV6, Bolt EV and EUV. It still more efficient than ID4, Ioniq 5, Model X, Mach E and everything from BMW and Audi.

You lost me at 190 miles range. All EV owners know that's about 160 in reality, even less when add passengers, heavy acceleration, hvac- this would NEED to be charged daily, sometimes twice a day depending on your driving habits. Insane

Who in the world is considering any EV of any type if they drive 60,000-120,000 miles a year!? The range is meaningless unless you live in an apartment without the ability to charge at home.
@quickpstuts412
@quickpstuts412 8 ай бұрын
@@evrythingis1 I wouldn't say range is totally meaningless. Some people like myself prefer to have extra range buffer for their comfort level. I work from home but still bought a 315 range car because I wanted a larger "comfort buffer" on days where I may need to drive a longer distance. Not to mention I keep cars longer than the average person, so I wanted a decent battery range for the degradation factor over time. For someone who lives in an extremely cold climate that drives 75 miles per day, would seriously need to consider whether this RZ range is enough, especially if they want a buffer in extreme temps.
@evrythingis1
@evrythingis1 8 ай бұрын
@@quickpstuts412 Oh yeah, how often have you used that extra range? Not even one single time? You say that the extra range isn't useless, and then fail to provide a single reason for that statement. If you're buying car specs based on random senseless fear then deserve whatever crap you ended up buying.
@quickpstuts412
@quickpstuts412 8 ай бұрын
@@evrythingis1 I wasn't trying to be combative so not sure why such a response about "deserving crap." Just explaining my reason. I respect what you're saying but I personally wanted the comfort buffer since I live in extremely hot temps and it's my first EV. I have been able to take road trips to the next state in the heat without needing to charge. Everyone's comfort level is different as a new buyer. I certainly could have done fine with 250 and I see that now, but some want buffers because this was new to me. It's all good either way. To each their own. I love Lexus BTW as a former owner. I just chose something different this time. No regrets. Take care and smile dude. LOL
