Kia represents quality and value. Engines used to have problems but the last 4-5 years have been solid. Close friend of mine is a chief mechanic at our local dealership and according to him quality and reliability has been improved a lot.

Been improved a lot??? I say since they were at the bottom of the pack in reliability is not saying a whole lot. My Sorento bass had all kinds of electrical issues, bulbs would burn out every month, valve cover gasket leaked and replaced 3 times and don't even get me started about the windshield gasket. Never again will I buy either a Kia or Hyundai product.

Biggest issue with self inflicted. 7,500 mile oil change recommendation. In the later years they reduced the mileage recommendation. Even with the warranty replacement engines, the mileage between oil changes was shortened. Who would have ever thought that more frequent oil changes will result in longer engine life. If only I studied more in school?🤣

Yup that how Toyota gets y’all with garbage vehicles and i have 20 20 vision my guy. FYI Toyota 🐑 Its a Toyota………. Japanese transport officials raided a Toyota-affiliated plant Tuesday after the company admitted to cheating on engine testing, as Toyota Motor Corp. reported it sold over 11 million vehicles in 2023 to retain its status as the world’s top car manufacturer. Hours after the probe began at Toyota Industries Corp.’s plant in Hekinan, Aichi Prefecture, central Japan, Toyota Chair Akio Toyoda vowed to steer the company out of scandal and ensure the Japanese automaker’s group companies stick to “making good cars.” “My job is to steer the way for where the overall group should go,” Toyoda said. An investigation including third-party experts found 174 cases of faked tests affecting dozens of models, including cars sold under the Toyota Motor Corp. nameplate. The review found that cheating went back 30 years. The scandal began after a whistleblower came forward in April last year.

The original Kia Sportage, their first entry into the US, was a true little off-roader. It had a low range, skid plates, decent ground clearance with short overhangs. It was received as a cute-ute like the Toyota RAV-4, however the Sportage could never compete with the RAV on road, but get into the sand at the beach and the Sportage would plough through, something the RAV-4 wasn’t designed to do. Today, Kia and Hyundai make a bunch of CUV’s that look off-roast except they are truly minivans and station wagons in disguise. It wasn’t always that way, but otherwise these vehicles are way way better in every conceivable way from their predecessors.

I will also agree to disagree. We see most four cylinder Toyota 2.4 burning oil, the newer Tacoma also burns oil. Honda with their transmission issues. Not one manufacturer is in a class by themselves. They all have issues. Most are because they follow the manufacturers maintenance schedule. When maintained correctly, about twice as often then what the manufacturers tells you. You should have a very long life with your vehicle.

I'll give you points for noticing that Japanese branded automakers are getting too complacent and Kia/Hyundai aware quickly stepping up their gamer but let's be realistic. They still are leaving owners frustrated with transmission and engine problems white the Honda, Toyota, Mazdas and Subaru owners pass them by on the shoulder of the road. I will never buy another Kia/Hyundai product again. The ride was great in my Sorento when it would run but all of the problems I had(and judging by the dealership's waiting room I gather I'm not the only person with a broken down Kia that has a nice interior) I would rather be in a less upscaled interior Japanese vehicle that has way better engine/transmissions than to be taking a Kia/Hyundai dealership's service department waiting room chair for a test drive.
