The .1 is a completely new generation, a new chassis, interior, etc but with the previous gen engine. The .2 is historically merely a refresh with some changes to the front and rear fascia, a few interior tweaks, and the highlight being an engine upgrade. In the past, when Porsche wasn’t so hamstrung by emissions regulations, they would bore out the engine by .2 liters, in some cases increase the redline, and with the GT3, it would inherit the previous gen GT3 RS engine. In this case, that’s exactly what happened, but instead of an increase in power, they needed to detune the RS engine and add 2 more catalytic converters (4 total) for essentially a break even point in horsies… it’s not sexy to highlight that for the first time they’ve been unable to increase displacement, or horsepower from the previous gen because of emissions regulations - but look at it this way, and Porsche can’t say this, but an aftermarket exhaust should be incredibly potent on this gen GT3, and you’re essentially getting an S/T engine and I wouldn’t be shocked if a cat-back exhaust (with 2 high flow cats) doesn’t increase power to the 540hp range and with the hotter cams it’ll howl! If you add the lightweight package to the Touring, and purchase the S/T clutch/flywheel as others have already done (for $11K), you have essentially an S/T without the $300K ADM (over sticker market adjustment). Coming from an S/T owner, I think that’s amazing value for this GT3
@jimsteinway6953 ай бұрын
That’s not true. From 991.1 to 991.2 it had a completely different engine from the racing department instead of the regular motor with gts stuff. In the 992 the only difference in the motor is the tuning from gt3 to RS
@TheGreekCarGeek3 ай бұрын
@@jimsteinway695 As I said: “the .2… highlight [is] an engine upgrade,” respectfully, what’s not true about that? That the 991.1 engine was not from the racing department: While it’s true that the engine is based on the power plant out of the 991 Carrera S, it shares only a few common parts. Nearly every component, and in particular the crankshaft and valve train, were specially adapted or developed for the 991 GT3. It had multi-point electronic indirect injection, forged pistons, titanium conrods, and VarioCam variable valve timing, along with a 9,000rpm redline. Saying it’s a “regular motor with GTS (I think you meant GT3) stuff” is akin to saying a 911 S/T is a “regular 911” since its chassis is based on the Carrera platform. It’s a Porsche GT division, motorsport-derived engine through and through. As for the difference between the 992 GT3 and RS engine: Yes, the engines are similar, but the RS has higher duration, aka “hotter,” cams, making the valve overlap longer, and the engine rev even more ferociously from 6,000 up to its redline at 9,000 RPM; revamped cylinder heads were designed to provide more lubrication in high G-force turns, and they redesigned the shaft that operates each of the three throttle bodies per bank; they’re now aerodynamically profiled to speed up the flow of intake air at high revs. They also tweaked the cooling system.

This Phase 2 has absolutely nothing special compared to Phase 1, and for once, I completely agree with that KZbin channel. There’s no celebration because, in the end, they know very well that there’s nothing to celebrate. They’re not proud of their product, but we can’t blame them. We must remember the European restrictions, environmental concerns, and legal obligations that forced Porsche to add not just 2 catalytic converters but 4. At least there’s still the sound this car produces. Then, adjusting the gear ratio to be 8% more efficient was a necessity, even though the car has lost top speed and 20 Nm of torque. There’s nothing special about this car. The gear ratio barely compensates for the losses caused by environmental restrictions. Maybe the Alcantara on the dashboard gives a little thrill, but that’s it. Otherwise, aesthetics alone never justify an additional 40,000 euros. You’d have to be foolish to prefer this Phase 2 over Phase 1. However, I’m pretty sure that Phase 1 won’t see any drop in resale value.

For the first time in 25 years of GT3, Gen 2 is inferior to Gen 1. Same engine, same output but lower max speed and reduced torque. Iconic front sidelights gone. Iconic centre analogue tachometer gone. Iconic 918 buckets gone. Rear end on Touring now has awkward looking stick on gurney flap. Heavier due to extra particulate filter and two extra cats in complex new exhaust. Bound to impact engine sound. Base price up by £30k. On Gen 2, the only way to get back to the weight of Gen 1 is to tick the Leichtbau package, which costs £30k. All options will be around 20% more expensive. Suddenly the entry price for GT3 is £200k-plus. A rising tide lifts all boats, so Porsche has done a huge favour here to owners of previous Gen GT3s. I can only see 992.1 GT3 prices firming now as there is no point waiting 18 months for a weaker product.
