Title: Refugee Protection in Japan Challenges and Opportunities
Abstract:
The number of people forced to flee their homes around the world continues to increase, reaching 100 million last year. Japan joined the Refugee Convention after accepting Indochina refugees, and accepts refugee applications from individuals who has fled to Japan, examines them, and grants refugee status or other status. Japan also accepts displaced people from Myanmar, Afghanistan, Ukraine on different schemes. This lecture will provide an overview of refugee reception in Japan, consider the challenges it faces, and consider the situation surrounding refugees in Japan.
