Regrets. I have them. But I also have 17K words in this WIP and can now happily return to my "no new stories" writing rule for 2020! :)
0:03 What is the #24hourwriteathon, why am I doing it, what's the objective?
THE WRITEATHON EXPERIMENT!
Thoughts (several days later) & my feelings on if I'd ever do this again
☟↓ QUESTIONS FOR YOU BELOOOOOW! ↓☟
D I S C U S S I O N Q U E S T I O N S :
Am I crazy for thinking that it's a great idea to have 1 day per month where I do an 18-hour writeathon just to get new story ideas out of my brain??
Would you ever attempt a 24-hour writeathon?
How has your writing been treating you the past week? Have you started any new stories recently? (Or are you trying to finish some before Camp NaNo??)

This video was everything that I hoped it would be! LOL. NICE word count, Kate!! It also inspired me to suggest that the next loooooong writing experiment be structured into continuous Pomodoros. As in "25 on / 5 off / 25 on / 5 off / 25 on /5 off / 25 on / 5 off / 25 off" and then repeat continuously for the duration of the experiment. I wonder if the greater structure would help or hinder your productivity? and how it would impact your. creative process?

I almost always write in word sprints. I find that I can write almost as much in 15 minutes or so that I can in 30 minutes to an hour. I usually do 15 on 15 off.

First off, I DID tell you not to do it :P But also, because I'm an enabler and I love you, have you considered the timing being the worst part? Like instead of a 6-6 what if you did like midnight to midnight or 10pm-10pm. Because think about it this way, you could just get up early the day before, go to bed early, 4 -6 hours before you start, and then your middle of the night hours when your body is used to being asleep, you'll be the most awake. This meaning, you won't be combatting your body in its normal sleep period along with being exhausted. So theoretically, it might be easier to get through 24 hours in this manner. Lastly, this video was great. All of my favorite things. Your face, your panic, your dad, your pupper. ALL GOOD THINGS.

I love the idea of taking one day a month and writing whatever you want. I think that can help with the "shiny new idea" syndrome. I don't think I would want to write for 24 hours straight once a month for health and more importantly sanity's sake, but a day dedicated to that idea. It takes dedication to stay focused as a writer and commit to the deadlines. This can be one way to combat this. I always enjoy watching your videos. I feel like you are the voice in my head!

I attempted a 24 Hour Writeathon last November. I actually used it to kickstart my 50k Weekend attempt because I figured that 24 hours straight would give me my best chance at writing 50k words in three days. I wrote just under 15k words during my 24 Hour Writeathon and a little over 25k during the 50k Weekend Attempt. & I'm 100% willing and wanting to try another 24 Hour Writeathon because I'm clearly insane lol :)

I imagine it's so hard to know you are not allowed any new stories all year, because isn't that the moment you suddenly get even more ideas for new stuff than usual? So I'm all for being flexible with your rules and giving yourself a cheat day. Also, great vlog! Because I have like 15 ideas probably more. And off the top of my head I can think of at least five stories I really want to work on. So yeah focusing on one project is a huge problem for me. Hour 2, while you were pondering what to do regarding the names of classical composers, two names popped in my mind Gabriel Faure (Pavane) Samuel Barber (Adagio for Strings), I love those songs! And, a piece of advice, why don't you give one of the characters one of your own likes, dislikes and traits or the likes, dislikes and traits of someone you know? It would be easier than doing research... in this case.

Part of me wonders if the 24 hour writeathon would be less stressful if you let yourself just take a nap midway through, a schedules break time sorts. I say this because watching while the video, I noticed that each time you took a break you still seemed a bit stressed about it or kinda guilty about it. Though I guess putting in breaks would defeat the purpose of a 24 hour writeathon because then it'd just be regular writing schedule, but what would be the difference between a normal workday, a real 24 hour writeathon, and a 24 hour writing session with designated breaks that don't count towards the 24 hours you have to be writing. It's kinda the age old question of "are power naps good and can they replace regular sleep?" I feel like the Mythbusters did a thing about this on a special episode.

Wow... How you manage to do one of these every so often, I have no clue. I've been trying to one of these for sooo sooo long, but with my other work and living with roommates, I think I might try a modified version. I can already tell I'm going to need a lot of spiritual motivation by way of tons of your challenge videos. Oh my god, does this mean I'm going to be doing this? Does it?? Does IT??? ahhhhh

Watching your video through the first 2/3 I had the bright idea of wanting to do it too, even though I have written, at most, for 2 consecutive hours... and then I watched the last 5 minutes and was like "nope, nope, nope, gotta go" lol

with the question about multiple projects, I have a notebook where I write all the ideas I have for books, then I continue with my project that I'm on. after I've finished that first project, I am looking for a new story while I wait a bit of time to do my revisions and draft 2.

I never tried a 24 hour one yet but I attempted a 12 hour one where I wrote the beginning of a Zombie Apocalypse short story (which may turn into a full length novel because of how I ended the story) featuring a twelve year old protagonist whom the day Zombies started walking the Earth was home sick alone while her parents were at work she spent the majority of the day asleep not watching the news or anything so she doesn't know about the walking dead yet and she decides to look out the window and sees someone being eaten by a Zombie "Uh oh!" I wrote 11,217 words in the short story but now I am thinking about turning it into a novel but I need an outline and characters for that the 11,000 plus words was just free written words no outline no sense of where it's going nothing but now I need direction to know more before I continue

It’s so cool you work on multiple projects at a time. When I write something I get so into it and obsessed I think about it all the time and when I’m working on it I can’t even imagine working on something else, nothing even feels appetizing. That’s the fun of it for me, complete immersion into characters and a story and pure obsession. Its interesting how writers are all so different.

I consider myself a mix of planner and pantser but that 36 scene sheet was too much for me lol. I start by getting the main character designs and back story and then I shape the plot around their personalities and how they would react to things. I'm writing a fantasy novel so the world-building planning is taking more of my time too.

I've tried 24 hour readathons, I can never stay up for the entire 24 hours. So in that regard, I must applaud you. You were also very productive for those 24 hours. I would agree though, your mood dropped towards the end so cutting it down next time would probably be a good idea.

I want to try this now. Watched your last video on the 24 hour writeathon, so I know it'll probably go down horribly. I can't even write for one hour without saying "Is it over yet?" I'm a new writer. I've never even finished a short story before. Speaking of which, I only really tried twice to write a short story. I never finished. My goal for the 24 hour writeathon is to reach 5,000 words. (Also, I'm not going to write for 24 hours. I don't want to mess up my sleep schedule, so I'm only going to write from the time I wake up to the time I go to bed.)

How long are your scenes for? I always struggle with finding length in them. I know the average amount is a page and a half? Just want to know how you do it. Love the video!

You said you wouldn't do the 24hour write again, for at least 3 years - So do a 12 hour or an 18 hour write, grab your most productive hours.
