I did this to my mid-2010 MacBook Pro a few years ago. Took out the optical drive, gave it dual 2.5" SSDs in RAID, 16GB of DDR3 (total overkill, but it was cheap) and swapped the battery for a new one. Still kind of slow because it's a Core 2 Duo... But it works! And it actually has more RAM and SSD storage than the base 2019 model... Being able to easily swap the battery is also a huge plus. New models = planned obsolescence.

@QuantumBraced
@QuantumBraced 3 жыл бұрын
@@potato4987 I have the mid-2010 13" and it does work for that model, don't know about the others. But honestly, at this point the CPU in it is such a massive bottleneck (it's a Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz) that putting 16GB of RAM in it makes little sense, you will never be able to take advantage of it. When I did it in 2015, I could still open 100 tabs in Chrome on that machine so I could use the RAM, but today I don't know if the CPU could handle anything like that at all. Save your money, the cheapest laptop today would run circles around that 2010 MacBook Pro.

@@Dykstra1979 It should run latest Windows 10 without any problems. First gen i5 and 8GB RAM is still very solid. It will likely run something beyond Windows 10 too. Same can't be said about Mac. It's already on last supported version without any upgrades past that OS expected, it's basically at the end of its lifespan. Meanwhile Dell is not, it still has 4 more years of life and maybe even more. Used Mac prices make no sense. There are much older Windows laptops that are still perfectly usable, meanwhile Macs don't have this level of longevity.

Who cares? It's a phone. It doesn't even have a 4K screen. Even on the iPhone 11 Pro Max, the number of pixels is only 37% that of a 4K screen. The horizontal resolution is only a bit better than 1080p (1242p). Even if you watch the video through a microscope you probably won't notice a difference between 1080 and 4K. Why waste the battery and CPU cycles rendering unnecessary pixels that maybe two people on Earth will notice? Playing back full 4K footage is useless one the iPhone, and pretty much any other phone.

i have a mid 2012 mbp 13" that i did those upgrades on and it's still doing its job well! starting to get a bit tired lately so i think i need to change the battery it's going on over 1100 cycles now. swapped the DVD drive with a secondary drive caddy that lets me have 2 hard disks in my laptop! i have a 250gb ssd and a 1 tb hdd for big storage. honestly i love my macbook and i dont want to ever upgrade even though that screen is just horrible at this point. OH also i reapplied the thermal paste on the heatsinks and that really improved the performance a lot! i was working on a big coding project and i was starting to have an incredibly hard time running my code editor and my chrome instances and scripts running in the background... but after thermal paste change it regained its life for sure

I recently did the same exact thing, same mid 2012 MacBook pro, upgraded the 2x2gb ram to 1x8 and 1x2, and installed an SSD as well ask keep the original 500gb spin drive in the disk drive slot. It's my favorite laptop that I have owned and often chose to work on this instead of my big gaming rig. This MacBook is going to be my buddy until the bitter end. Glad to see videos of people repurposing used hardware instead of just buying new, there is a lot of silicon and money to be saved out there.

That MacBook Pro is still my main computer. Mine is upgraded with more RAM and an SSD. Most of the time, I keep it connected to my mid 2010 27 inch iMac that I use as a display. I consider myself somewhat of a power user and that so called “old” MacBook is still more than powerful enough for my needs. I find it funny how these spoiled KZbin tech reviewers automatically assume that a computer is all but obsolete if it was released more than a week ago. It’s like they completely forget that not everybody has money to burn on the latest and greatest, and that these “old” computers are what most actual working class people still use on a daily basis.

I used and loved this for years, as did my parents. I upgraded mine to 16GB of RAM, installed a 480GB SSD (which I still use today on a different computer) and replaced the DVD drive with a second hard drive using a special mounting bracket. I would have appreciated a higher resolution screen, and touch capability (modern Mac laptops still don't have this, I guess so Apple can sell more iPads..) but I really loved this laptop. Apple's successor laptops with their lack of ports and upgradability actually drove me away from being a lifelong Mac user and I swapped to cheap laptops running Linux. I advised my parents to keep using their 2012 Macbook Pros as long as possible, and avoid upgrading if they can.

I have the same machine bought in 2012. I upgraded it to a 128SSD with a 1tb HHD instead of optical drive and 8gb ram. It still runs smooth af! The only downside of it is the weight.

I upgraded my late 2011 a while back with 8 gigs of ram a cheap 250gb ssd new battery and fresh dab of thermal paste last year. It all cost me like $100. I have had my MacBook Pro since it came out and will use to the end.
