Ahhh, the Sony PlayStation, the O.G., the PS1, the PSX and as some would like to call it: Nintendo's biggest mistake...
Very simply put, when Nintendo decided to change course on its partnership with Sony at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in June of 1991, opting instead to hook up with Phillips on its upcoming 32-Bit CD add-on project for the SNES, and effectively embarrassing Sony, who just a day prior unveiled a prototype of that very CD add-on system (dubbed "Play Station"), Sony said F-U and thus the PlayStation as we know it was born.
Sony's 32-Bit console was released in Japan on December 4th 1994 and almost a year later to the rest of the world, including September 9th 1995 in North America. The PS1 was the first home console to sell over 100 million units worldwide, boasting a huge library of games (over 2400). And with it being CD technology, costing much less to produce, many game developers immediately jumped ship. I'm looking at you Square Enix or simply Squaresoft at the time.
Some of the most influential games of all time either made their debut on the PS1 (Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider etc) or took a huge leap forward. Examples of the latter were the Castlevania and Final Fantasy franchises, with Final Fantasy 7 and Castlevania Symphony of the Night respectively among others. With the PS1, Sony began its videogame dominance, hogging up most of the marketshare, leaving only scraps for Nintendo and Sega to pick up. And well, here we are several decades later and Sony is still dominating the gaming landscape!
So, with all that said, let's count down 25 of the best PlayStation 1 games! #sony #playstation #ps1 #squaresoft #tombraider #finalfantasy7 #crashbandicoot #retrogaming #retro #retrogames #sonycomputerentertainment #top25 #oldschoolgaming #spyrothedragon #parappatherapper
