As a libertarian it really makes me tear up to see journalists killed for doing their job, but to place blame on people because they called you the enemy or made a cruel joke is ridicules. The only person who bears responsibility is the shooter. It was his choice to harass that woman, his choice to sue the newspaper and his choice to walk in there with a gun. Cameron Johnson, seriously? It's not about Black people being alive. If it were, as said a million times before me, they would go to Chicago to protest black on black violence. It's a hate group plain and simple. If it were not, they would have apologized to the Ferguson Police for their wrongful condemnation of Darren Wilson for his, very much justified, shooting of Michael Brown. They still play the narrative of him being an innocent bright young man who never did anything wrong. They may not be quite as bad as the KKK, but give them time and leverage and they will be.

My mom worked by the capital gazette. I was so scared, and just cried. My mom goes “ it wasnt that close” But she was like 5-7 min away from that! Her one friend also worked in the building. Thankfully, she was not hurt. Its scary, things are getting closer and closer. Too close for comfort. I dont like hearing another one of my moms friends had to tow the shooters car away. You just dont think these things are gonna happen, then they do. Annapolis isnt huge either, so that makes it even more scary. Either way, i feel horrible for everyone in that building. Friends, strangers, everyone. I thank god that he didnt go anywhere else, but i also feel horrible this happened in the first place. I hope the people killed rest in peace, and i hope we buff up security so this wont happen again. Edit: she was 1.5 miles away from it. I dont know if that is still 5-7 min or less, but i dont care, it dosent change anything. He could have gone to other places with alot of people nearby, thank god he didnt and as well, its horrible this happened in the first place.

Not all journalist or outlets are to blame for the polarized climate. Sure it's easy to point a finger at the likes of Fox News and MSNBC for this, but this was simply a small town paper that by most accounts was not hyper-partisan at all. They were simply there to serve the community. Outlets like this are important to a fair and free democracy. Blaming all journalists devalues truth and fairness. There's a reason freedom of the Press is the first amendment to the constitution and gun rights is the second.

Hi Phil! I’m from Annapolis and I just wanted to thank you for not sharing the shooter’s face and name; your focus on the victims, those affected, and the bigger picture should be replicated by all news sources. The last few minutes of your show put exactly what I’ve been thinking into words. We have to be aware that what we say matters and that how we talk about media has changed significantly over the past few years, and whether people believe the shooting is related to that I believe the way we process and react to information has fundamentally changed. Thank you for being a thorough, unbiased, and upfront source; much love from Maryland 🦀

We also need to update laws re: threats - we should no longer have to wait until an actual crime is committed but treat written/verbal threats as a crime as well. I'm not saying with the exact same punishment as the crime would be, that's absurd, but take the threats seriously with consequences to the issuer of the threat (restraining orders, counseling, out right relocation, something, not the nothing that is done now citing "no crime has been committed").

I think that the whole idea of digging into someone's past while they're experiencing a brief time in the spotlight is stupid. Most of the time, it seems like people do it just to tear them down and effectively end their 15 minutes of fame. Ex: that bullied kid that ended up being from a family of racists thanks to people that dug up old Facebook posts, that guy that was going to be drafted in the NFL until his old high school tweets got out... I could go on forever. Makes me want to delete all my social media if I someday get a remote chance at fame or notoriety.

It's hard to not feel as if the other side of your political party's media isn't against you and your family. The Left and the Right both have strong feelings for care of Americans, but they both believe different ways to go about nurture, education, health, etc. So when you see a media organization who's leaning on the side against yours, who has different ideals and ideas and perspectives, it's almost like an insult to you, personally. The Right will say that the Left hates Christians and young Americans while the Left will say the Right hates Muslims and the poor, but both sides have different ways of going about things and both will tend to focus on different things and groups of people to help. I've found myself doing the exact same thing. We live in an age where every single person in the world is connected to every other person in the world, and can send and receive information and messages immediately. Trying to blame/connect anything to Milo Y. seems silly - the guy literally spews hyperbolic rhetoric to troll people in an attempt to rattle their cage and force them to think about their stance on political topics. Like him or not, cause he can be quite annoying to listen to, he is not someone to blame for this sort of nonsense - it's a waste of time and missing the point, thus reducing the chance of actually finding the real cause or solving the issue. There will always be someone who has said something that could be similar to something that happened, that's how Nostradamus became famous; that doesn't make him any more right or responsible if truth is found in his "prophesies", that is up to those who interpreted it or enacted it.

Lord Victor Halgaard Saying you can’t wait for journalists to be gunned down on sight is not a troll. It’s literally hoping that people kill innocent people. Zach Arbogast, I'm not saying it's a great life choice. If you put this all into context, I'm saying *I* don't choose to think less of someone because they were a porn star. I'm not at all saying everyone *should* do it. I'm talking about a story where someone had an article published because they thought she'd made a life choice that the publisher somehow felt needed to be spotlighted. If you read back, my response didn't say that being a porn star is a great choice. What I am saying though, is that my view of someone doesn't change because they chose that.

You're correct, words do have a very real impact and should not be taken lightly. Please do remember though, for quite some time, quite a few journalists have been very irresponsible with their own words, in a lot of cases being disingenuous or outright dishonest. This is why the world is so divided and every call for segregation, every call for a group to be demonized, every alt-right accusation, every ridiculous article about privilege, patriarchal or whatever nonsense just makes it worse. Famous people who hate the media don't hate it for negative coverage they hate it for dishonest coverage.

I was with you up until the Milo and Trump thing, this wasn't political it was simply a grudge. As for why members of the media are attacked verbally that simply comes down to their clear lack of care for facts and neutrality, if they are allowed to sling mud then mud shall be slung back a war of words is perfectly acceptable.
@GamesandNonsenseUnleashed6 жыл бұрын
About the Media question at the end of the show- It is the fact that Journalism has become more than just reporting the facts. It has become page after page, story after story of opinion and tabloid-worthy bait. The Media isn't respected because of years trying to fill a 24-hour news cycle and keep profits up among a rapidly changing world from old formats. There is often very clear bias from News outlets, starting with papers and channels supporting publicly a specific political figure; thus aligning themselves against the supports of the other side. They lose that neutral objective ground they were supposed to stand on. Everything has become suspect. Everything has become outrage. Everything has become truth, regardless of fact or evidence.
@DesyncZX6 жыл бұрын
This reasons behind the internet doing anything tend to be a mix of everything that you think it could be. On the "25 most influential people on the web", the list seems extremely biased and is missing many people. They seem to have been focusing primarily on politics and controversies when they were making selections for the list, then sprinkled in people from other areas that they remembered hearing about at some point. (Includes Ryans toy reviews but ignores Pewdiepie, Phillp DeFranco, and IDubbs)
@Whofan066 жыл бұрын
DesyncZX It's a list of influential people, not popular people or people with established large fanbases. It's people who have had an impact, good or bad, within this year. Politics and controversy are exactly what I would expect to see on that list, not KZbinrs who have been popular for sometime but haven't done anything with great effect recently. Thats not to say the list is perfect though.

I think the internet and the news makes things seem far more connected than they are. Milo makes a comment in the UK about a story he's involved in, a few days later a guy kills people. That doesn't mean the guy was a fan of Milo or had heard what he said. It seems pretty obvious that this guy had a personal vendetta against the newspaper

I hope that all the living members of Capital Gazette are able to recover and come to terms with there fellow worker’s deaths. I do hope that we can learn from this. I am concerned about Hannity’s response. But Just like it was wrong for Hannity to blame Maxine Waters, it is wrong to blame anyone, INCLUDING TRUMP. Edit- except the shooter himself, he deserves all the blame and hatred
@eeterp326 жыл бұрын
Thanks Obama
@ashleyw91116 жыл бұрын
We can pretty safely blame the shooter. Smart ass remarks aside, Trump's words may have actually influenced the shooter. We can't exactly say for certain, but when I think about it and why it was now instead of years ago or years in the future, Trump could be part of the reason. He may have stirred up old resentments with his constant attack on what he sees as unfair treatment by the media, not unlike how the shooter felt he was treated. Now this was clearly a sick man to begin with, but I do think we should be thinking about how the crazies will receive our words when we speak as well. Especially the president.

Dominic nyuon the most influential people would be the ones who influence the most the plateforme and/or the community. There isn’t an official metric for this so it could be rather subjective but that doesn’t mean that any answer is good. Someone being influential doesn’t mean that they influence you personally to do something, it’s about influencing the most people. It doesn’t even have to do with them being good or bad. Many just listed there favorite creators. Favorite and influential are far from being synonymous. It’s like when people ask you what is the most melodic sound in nature. It’s subjective, but if your answer is a sound that no one can hear for example because of its frequency, or something that literally destroys your ears and makes you deaf, you are pretty off the mark.
@ClemintineCake6 жыл бұрын
Maybe I misunderstood phils question but i thought he was asking who was most influential in your life. It seems like an odd question to ask who we think the most influential people are period, b/c it seems like a strange thing to know, but i could definitely be wrong.
@KookiesNolly6 жыл бұрын
how is that strange? The whole segment in the video was about who is the most influential person on social media period. That's why he asked us who is the most influential on YT, the question is linked to the context of the video. Asking us who is the most influential person in our lives would be weirder because it is less related to the story he was talking about.

"We should be appreciating the people who are dedicating their lives to trying to get information to us." Please Phil, do not try to paint journalists as heroes. Most journalists got into the business; (1) for money... it's a job, (2) for notoriety that could spin into fame and fortune, (3) to get a bigger bullhorn to push their views, (4) to sit back and throw peanuts at people. The number of journalists actually "trying to get information to us" is shrinking every day. Mostly they make information to cram down our throats.

Not American. My honest opinion is that I don't honestly feel anything anymore when I hear anything about a shooting in America. The fact is, the last story about a shooting that made me emotional is about a shooting in a children's school, and most of the victims were 5-year-olds. Americans love to talk about their guns so much that they're willing to let 5-year-olds die so that they can keep talking about it instead of doing anything. Why would anything change when it was journalists that died instead?
@82Jaster6 жыл бұрын
I don't think anyone realistically expects any change. This is just what this country is now. Sandy Hook was really the nail in the coffin when it came to the gun debate. Because it was the moment that America decided that guns matter than the lives of people, and now that included children whose lives had barely even started.

It's no one's fault execept the person who did the violent act. We need to focus more on mental health then playing the blame game. Imagine if this shooter had proper therapy and meds to deal with his anger they would be alot less chance for him to hurt someone. Also we need to put people who make threats like this in mental hospitals not jail they need help not punishment. Guns,the media ,video games, movie, tv,left or the right are not the problem we need change at the base of the problem. You don't put a fire out by shooting water at the top you put it out by shooting it at the base. And mental health is our base.

Great coverage on all this news, Phil. Been watching you for so many years, and honestly so glad to see how much you've grown in terms of honest reporting and respectfulness. The clickbait women's images were my biggest, and probably my only gripe with the channel, and I'm so glad to see you moving away from all that. The amount of influence you have on this platform is palpable, and addressing your own missteps like that, as well as major issues like Trump's demonization of the media, has such an important effect on so many people. Thanks for everything you do, and for the person you are!

Also, I really hope you aren't swayed by some of these replies. I know most of your viewerbase is more moderate and therefore will tend to disagree on this particular stance you represented on the Trump vs the media story, but I truly do think you're onto something great with this line of thinking, and it's an issue that needs to be more largely explored on outlets like yours, especially to a younger generation that's starting to become more involved. Really do commend the direction you took with this issue and how professionally you handled it, and hope backlash doesn't cause you to feel you have to reneg!

People in positions like Milo, Trump, Hannity, Watters, etc. have influence over people. What they say truly does matter. The most influential people in the world and throughout history gained their influence because of one thing: their words. To say that people in influential positions have no power nor responsibility for the actions of their followers is to be completely ignorant of history and reality itself.
