I hate people using Ghost in the Shell as an example of white washing. In the source material the character Mitoko Kusanagi is a Japanese lesbian turned full cyborg who willfully wears a body she finds attractive, that of a white woman. Her choice of body type is even brought up in story on multiple occasions. I'd be like getting upset with Joel Kinnamen for playing the role of Takeshi Kovacs on Altered Carbon. You can't call it white washing if the role actually calls for a white person in the first place.

As a transman myself, I see no issue with the whole cis people playing transpeople. Because yeah it's about the story, but it's also about the actors too. If they think Scarlet would be the best actor to fit the character then I'd rather have Scarlet than someone who doesn't act the character as well as Scarlet could. To me it's about talent, and Scarlet obviously has it.

At first, I actually agreed with the notion that judges should retire at 65 years old. However, I quickly changed my opinion after Phil said that certain judges could stay on if they were approved by the president. I guess that a judge at 75 can be better than one at 45... BUT.. they should pass some kind of test to certify that they are not senile or anything..

No hate intended, I have no issue with any person's sexuality/gender, but an actor or actress by definition is as Phil said, playing a role of a character, so a person they are not. As a transperson, I'm not offended by the whole Scarlet Johanson thing, I understand the reasons why they'd cast her over an actual trans man. I also understand some of the reasons other trans folks are upset by it too, and I admit it would have been really nice to see a trans person fill a role that brings exposure to our community, but I get why they didn't. Hopefully in the future we'll have more trans actors filling bigger roles, but we need more trans actors in general before that happens.

If an actor can act well, they get the job. If a trans person gets the role just because they're trans, they're probably not going to be as good as some of the actual actors who got fucked over. If you want a good film, you shouldn't force actors based off of their identity. If they fit the role, and are good at acting, they are the ones who should get the job.

All I have to say about Scarlet Johanson is that either any actors can play any characters or actors can only play characters that have the same race, gender, sexuality etc... as them. Anything else in-between is incredibly hypocritical. So if you're saying that only a trans can play that character, you're actually also saying that trans actors can only play trans characters and nothing else. And mind you, if thats honestly what you believe then alright then, theres no problem. But if you think you can only have trans actors play trans but that they should still be able to play characters who are not transgender then you're a fucking hypocrite.

The problem there is simply that trans people have an incredibly small number of acting opportunities, because they AREN'T considered for most of the same roles that cis actors are. If we lived in a society where trans actors were offered roles as action heroes and romantic leads and any other number of things, I don't think there would be nearly as much of an outcry against this. I really don't. But this is one of the few roles that a trans actor might even be given an opportunity to play (and one of the few chances for trans people to see themselves represented on screen) so seeing it being given to a cis actor is obviously going to rub people the wrong way. It's like... I'm loathe to use this metaphor, but it's like an able bodied driver pulling into a handicapped parking space. There are a hundred other spaces they could use, but they decided to take one of the few possible spots from someone who really needed it. If society could get to a place where trans actors ARE considered for non-trans roles, they wouldn't be as starved for representation and they wouldn't be quite as protective over the few trans characters there are out there.

@Rachel R im a fat guy with back problems and a voice that sounds like shit, I will never be able to play a guy who is attractive and sings what a shock, most rolls are for men and women, not a numale looking person who you realistically can't imagine doing anything physical, or a woman who is manly and has a beard. It's very rare for a trans person to come out on the other end looking passable as the sex they want to be, even more so attractive as the sex they want to be.

I'm a transguy - I agree with you 100%. An actor has a job to do, and the measure of how good they are at that job lies in their ability to demonstrate range in the types of roles they undertake. It would be nice if a trans actor was considered for this project, but who knows if any bothered to audition? If they did, it's possible Scarlett J was just better at portraying the role. If she was better, and the role was instead given to a trans person simply by virtue of the fact they were trans, that's discrimination against ScarJo. Roles should be awarded based on a person's merits as an actor, nothing more. I feel the same way about portraying disability in film.

Scarlett is performing the role of someone who started off as a woman and changed appearance to look like a man. Unpopular opinion but you should pick the perfect actor not just a who "is the same as the role" we live in a society where people claim that we shouldn't treat people different based on race, religion or sexuality yet you are asking the movie industry to do exactly that. if two people auditioned for a role one was straight and one was gay but it is a gay role are you going to automatically give the gay person the role because they are gay? even if they are terrible? it makes no sense. The ENTIRE point of being an actor is the ability to put yourself in other peoples shoes and play a wide variety of characters. How will actors learn or be able to do that is you can only cast a role based on sexual preference or gender identification? I am not necessarily of fan of ScarJo but y'all need to leave her alone because this is ridiculous

I'm actually completely understanding of ScarJo's unapologetic stance. If I were her, I wouldn't be apologising. The beauty of acting is that you can morph into the life and character of someone you are absolutely not. The Erasure Critique has been picking up steam for a good few years now in pop culture's every day discourse - and I completely disagree with the fundamental point that you must be of the same demographic, culture, personal experience, gender and ethnicity as the character who's story you're portraying. When it comes to the arts and creativity, you should be able to step into the shoes of another human being - whether you're a writer, an actor or any kind of storyteller. My view is that, while such critiques may have started off with good intentions all those years ago, they've turned into a form of serious social censorship - one where the aim is more about throwing the rotten fruit at whoever's 'misstepped' that day than about actually creating a more accepting world to live in.

The problem with her taking this role is that trans actors try to get roles but are always held back by the fact that they are trans. It’s another situation where a marginalized group has another opportunity taken away from them. She also had a rude response to the situation which made even more people dislike her. Especially since she has a bad record with already white-washing another role for a different movie. I like Scarlett Johansen but why give a role of a trans person to her when you could, I dunno, give it to a trans actor?

There are straight actors who play gay characters There are gay actors who play straight (sometimes womanising) characters. Something similar even happened in the movie "Kevin & Perry Go Large". Perry was played by a woman but the character was a man. People are just sensitive. Since when does the actor have to be the same as the character they're playing? A straight person playing a gay person or a gay person playing a straight person is completely different than this. There is actual representation of gay ppl actually playing a gay role. But there is BARLEY any representation for the trans community. How many trans roles have you seen in the media ? Probably not many. That’s the problem, for me at least. How is it different? Transgenders may identify as another gender, but unless they have work done on themselves, they're still gonna have the body of their original gender. A Transgender male is still gonna have a female body, so it's possible for the role to he given to a woman. And like I said before, in Kevin & Perry, an actress plays a male character, so where were the people like you? "Women shouldn't have to play male characters just to be in movies!" And shit like that. And do you know the reason there's barely any trans representation? It's because there's barely any transexuals in the entire world. They make up not even 3% of the world population. They're represented less because Trans people aren't as common as people like to think. And this is another reason for barely any trans actors/actresses. It's hard to get into acting, hundreds, thousands, even millions of people don't make it into the business, but it's suddenly a big personal attack when the person who gets rejected is Trans.

I'm proud of the American culture, but admittedly a little embarrassed by the way our media portrays our shortcomings. I'm especially proud of the diverse food and rich history of personal sacrifice and military triumph. I'm proud of the practical freedoms that we enjoy and the conveniences and efficiencies that technology has bestowed upon our lifestyles. If I could change anything, it would be that people stop worrying about what their (hypothetical) neighbors are doing if some arbitrary behavior or physical characteristic isn't literally causing harm. It's a small planet, and we need to learn to get along.

Johansson's response was not... ideal but honestly I agree with Phil here, if you're going to make a biographical movie about a trans person and how they transitioned, how can you make an already transitioned trans-man or woman play that role? Will that trans person be willing to be potray a gender that gave them dysphoria, addressed with a name belonging to a gender they don't identify with?? If so, great, but if not, we'd have a situation at hand.

OITNB did a great job handling this issue and it's super disappointing to not have that really low bar met. You can address a trans person's life before their transition respectfully, and without having a cis actor represent them After their transition too. It feels like no effort to be respectful to the community is being made, nor any real respect to Mr.Gill's life and narrative. The only reason I can think of, besides dysphoria, to not have a trans actor play a real trans person is the possible danger in going off HRT for the role but even then there are ways to get around that.

This. Sure, having a trans actor play this role comfortably would be great! Fantastic, even! However, I say this issue falls more onto the director. Can this director provide the feelings of body dysphoria that comes along with being trans properly? Will they make sure it is realistic and not harmful to the community that still gets shamed to this day? And, when it comes to Ghost in the Shell, I could really care less who played the lead role. An Asian actress would have been ideal, sure, however the movie itself was just not good. Visually? Great. Amazing. Fantastic! But everything else? Poorly written, poorly done, and rushed to hell and back to cram in iconic scenes. It did NOT do the source material justice (as many have already discussed extensively). If the movie were good? I think people would have mostly taken back their anger a little bit at the casting. And, like Phil said, I think it's more proper to have a female actress play the role of a trans man... IF the transition is a part of the narrative. An important aspect to the film at hand. If it's just about the story, and not the person per se, I would have done my best to cast someone who is trans if applicable. However, there just aren't an abundance of actors in the professional acting business, unfortunately. *I would rather choose someone that can properly act and portray the role than worry about their race or gender. If they can play the character and make me believe they ARE that character and NOT an actor.. Well, there are extremely few instances where I would care, were that the case.*

So casting a woman to play the role of someone who was born a woman and transitioned to a man is bad. Were they supposed to hire a man for the scenes later in life and a woman for the earlier scenes? Or we they supposed to hire a trans actor, in which case A) again how do you film scenes from various parts of his life and B) if _only_ trans people can play trans characters shouldn't only cis people be able to play cis characters? There is literally no scenario where making this film doesn't piss someone off.

a couple points : *1)* You're focusing entirely too much on group identity, whether or not a _group_ is successful or not is irrelevant. Whether or not an _individual_ with merit and ambition has said ambitions satisfied is what matters. *2)* You're placing undue emphasis on equality of outcome, again, what should be measured is whether or not the 'rules' are applied equally to all applicants for a position. Not whether or not the members of a position are all equally divisible by some immutable (read : irrelevant) characteristic. *3)* The disproportional "over"-representation of white, cis-gendered people in hollywood (and most other places in america) is due to the broader US population being mostly white and cis-gendered. America is ~%77 white, likewise, Hollywood is ~%73 white. America is ~%13 black, Hollywood is ~%12 black. so on and so forth. not every demographic lines up perfectly, but generally, Hollywood is just America writ small. *4)* Going back to my points about merit. There's a serious, _serious_ issue with saying somebody is unfit for a particular opportunity simply because of an immutable characteristic they do/don't possess. It doesn't help anybody, period. If we're making the call based on race, then it's racist. If we're making the call based on sex, then it's sexist. So on and so forth. If we can identify that a particular group is being unjustly discriminated against, and calling for such discriminatory practices to be stopped, that's one thing. But that's not what we're seeing here. what we're seeing here is, "[Group X] deserves a larger slice of the pie! Therefore particular opportunities ought to be reserved solely for [Group X]!" It's rooted in a terribly primitive form of thought. A form of thought where (at least to some extent) the worth of the individual is measured based on some immutable characteristic (race, gender, sexual orientation, etc) that they were born with. Last I checked, being black didn't make you better or worse than anyone else; no more than being blonde would make you better or worse than anyone else.

You can easily -emphasize- empathize with @Arrakiz666 's sentiment, but like you both pointed out, the fact remains that selecting actors and actresses by immutable characteristics rather than merit and name-recognition is not only economically illogical, but blatantly bigoted. Most anyone can understand wanting to stick up for, say, trans actors who may have less opportunities and roles, but it's amoral to suggest doing so at the expense of another actors explicitly because of that actor's race/sex/class/success/lived experiences. Because then it's just blatantly, shamelessly bigoted.

So I'm British but went to a 4th July fireworks display with my American fiance last night and had an interesting conversation. She told me that, at least where she grew up, American kids are taught all throughout childhood/school and on into adolescence that their country is the greatest. Odd, because I know all North Korean kids are taught the same thing. Now, obviously one of those two countries has to stretch the truth more than the other (!!) but the question still remains, regardless of whether America is truly one of the 'greatest' (whatever that means) countries in the world today, why are they teaching their kids that? Why is it so important to them that their kids think that way? Is it arrogance? Because it doesn't seem like they're teaching it saying "we should be grateful we live here" but more like "everyone else wishes they were us", which is patently untrue....but then a lot of them will never leave their own country to realise how the rest of the world sees America. It's a very interesting cultural topic.....

I heard it a lot growing up, but it was mostly from my parents and in a "be grateful" sense no matter who said it. I mean when you find out that your kids could be born into a concentration camp or worse if you lived elsewhere, you tend to start getting patriotic about your home. Also we had a lot of soldiers in previous and present generations that have seen womem and children being used to fight wars. They came back and reminded is how "great" the US is in comparison. There are jerks who feel that murica is the absolute best, but most people understand the truth to some degree.

It's not that easy to find them while they're not already doing other gigs. Johansson had a perfectly sensible response, people shouldn't be mad at her for playing a woman who was a transman. That's LITERALLY what the person was, considering they didn't get gender reassignment surgery (to my knowledge). I can understand why people would be upset over Scarlett's response, but I also understand where she is coming from. It seems like today we are living in a culture of outrage. Everyone gets offended by everything (hyperbole), and honestly it gets tiring after a while. Then you see all these corporations and actors profusely apologizing for even the most innocuous of acts, further fueling the outrage culture, even when they have clearly committed no sins worthy of an apology. Obviously, these people and corporations don't care at all about the issues they so vigorously apologize for. It's a cycle of someone saying something, witnessing the outrage brought from their actions, then publicly apologizing in fear of being witch-hunted. With that in mind I can at the very least appreciate Scarlett's honesty. I'd much rather get that, than yet another dishonest apology. I'd rather have a great white actress than a politically correct actor/actress who isn't very good at acting. Could they have found a great actor/actress that is also a trans person? Of course, but I don't know enough about the film-making process to claim that's an easy thing to do. Also, at the end of the day, it's a movie. This is a business. These are made with the main intent of turning a profit. These are not real life. These are fiction, even when presenting real life situations.

People do get classified though and that's never going to go away. It'd be nice if we could just snap our fingers and suddenly everyone is just a person but that's not reality. Trans people face struggles that non-trans people don't, if they want to feel a certain way about a certain situation that affects them then that is their right. Johansson's dismissive statement does not speak well to her intentions, and if you are going to portray a person accurately you need to respect their mindset and the things they felt were important. Sounds to me like Gill would have been one of the people ripping into her if he were alive today and was an outsider looking on at the whole situation.

I mean a trans girl at our school played a male role, because at the moment she still looks male. Was she mad? No, she was the best WWII singing butler there ever was! The fact that you can't name trans actors should be a red flag in and of itself. Cis actors play cis characters and gay characters and trans characters. But you don't see any trans actors playing cis characters, gay characters or trans characters. It's not that every trans person should be played by a trans actor (in fact it would have been less offensive if Gill was played by a cis FAT actor rather than a skinny actress) but in terms of representation there is none. Also, they could have at least had open auditions to see if any good trans actors, fat ones at that, auditioned instead of just casting the damn producer. Then again I think ScarJo is pants at acting so I might be biased.

I guess if they have a role to play as a person with a disability people would want an actual disabled person (that might not function properly to act) to play that role as well. But compared to Europe or us in Canada, it is pretty bad. But hey, either way, the problem is more some cities then your country as a whole. You take out St.Louis and Baltimore out of the Murder rates and you get 1000 less murders per year for only 1 million less people. Thats right, 10% of your murders happens in two cities which are about 0.25% of your total population.

the reasoning that only trans actors should interpret trans characters doesn't hold up: if you extend this reasoning logically you end up with forcing every movie to be a reality show, because a character who is x,y,z can only interpreted by an actor with the same characteristics, so an actor can only interpret themselves, because where do you draw the line? can a german actor interpret an brasilian character? why, because they are both white? why not, because they have different cultures? how about an italian actor interpreting a french man? or an actor from boston interpreting a character that grew up in seattle? that is unbelievably foolish. actors interpret characters, that is their job description, they give life to a character that is not them and that is not easy, that's why great actors are so famous and rich, they have the competence to do that!! it's the same thing when people get mad at actors for what their characters do, like when people hated on jack gleeson or lena headey. this drives me nuts, all this rage is unfounded and it is sad that such shallow ideas have such a big voice

TheBloodPainter I really like the point you made. As long as the actor can convincingly portray the role, I’m good 💯 This really only becomes tricky with accents/speaking other languages. For example, if the role is of an Englishman the actor needs to either actually be English or needs to be able to do a pretty damn convincing English accent. I can’t stand having to suffer through a movie/tv show listening to an American completely butcher an English accent 😩

I think I could easily say I'm _glad_ to be an American in that I have privileges and rights that I enjoy and benefit greatly from. However, I would only say I'm moderately _proud_ to be an American. To me, the idea of American pride is greatly tied to both government and how the American people as a whole have been acting. It's saying "I am willing to attach my name to and say I'm proud of this specific group I'm in," and personally I feel there's a lot we as a people have to improve upon and make an effort towards before I could be proud of the direction we're heading as a nation

I was previously rather apathetic about being an American. However, in the past few years, I've spent some time in S. America. And while I will keep going, it showed me first person how special my home country was and it filled me with pride, and it changed my world view dramatically. 3 years ago I got married in Australia. My dad flew out from South Africa for the event and I hadn't seen him in years. It was amazing. The day of the wedding he gave me his handkerchief and told me to put it in my pocket, in a sort of, "a distinguished man carries a handkerchief at all times" kind of way. A couple weeks later he left, back to South Africa, but left the handkerchief behind. I later found it in my suit pocket and to this day I'm not sure if he left it on purpose or by accident. But now I have a handkerchief that I carry with me to any special occasion, and it always makes me think of him. Phil, your shirt looks exactly like that handkerchief, thanks for reminding me what a rad dad I have

Why do we always point fingers at the actors or actresses but we never look at who is in charge of the casting? Those who most likely didn't give the minority a chance to play the part. Even if the actress or actor didn't take the role, the casting directors would still most likely just choose another person who didn't fit the minority for the role.

Adrianna Jane If anything its more along the line of they’re going to put whomever’s face in the main light that’s going to sell seats. She’s one of the biggest stars currently that I know of. It’s pretty much like what happened with Chris Pratt in Jurassic world. He wasn’t ideal for the role but he was just in a blockbusting marvel movie so they asked him if he wanted the role and he got it. Recognition+Beauty=$$$. They don’t care about accuracy.

That's a very valid point. She was offered a role, and accepted. She wasn't in charge of the role, but it's her duty now to portray that role in the best way possible. She's not always the best actress, but she's been in some good stuff. We can only give her a chance. I respect trans people, but to give the role to a trans person just because of that one detail might not be the best decision (not that casting scarlett is, but we'll see). If she tells the story properly and respectfully, then there shouldn't be a problem.

As a Pole I'm pretty impressed how well you cover this topic, great job Phil. Sadly, local elections are often not a indicator of overall politics situation in Poland, but I'm quite sure that it will drive more people to vote than usually. Problem with PiS comes from their supporters, majority of them are blue collar workers or just low-paid, uneducated people (no offence). They promised them to take back priviledges given to welthy and prosperous, and redistribute them. First step was program 500+, which gives 500 PLN for every newborn baby in country. It made young, lazy mothers stop working and just "produce" babies. Of course all money comes from national budget, vastly fueled by edutace middle class, which very often not decide to have a baby. This is just our situation in a nuttshell.

Extreme poverty among children decrease by 76%(from 11.9 to 2.8 per cent of all children) also I want to point out that reason why those women left their jobs is because they were earning there such garbage money, I mean think about it, if getting 500 pln(around 134 dollars) monthly for second child and up(unless you are very poor) is good enough reason to leave the job then there is something wrong with your job.

I think the whole thing is stupid. Let me break down why. How much of the US population is trans? less than 1%. Ok now how many people are trans and can act well enough to be the lead star in a major movie? Not that many. Ok now how many trans people can act well enough to be the lead in a major movie and are better actors or more "famous"/"popular" than existing "cis" actors? Even less than not that many. Should def charters be played by def actors? How about should blind characters be played by blind actors? How about actors playing people with Bi Polar Asperger's Schizophrenia etc...? Where do you draw the line on how hard must movie studios look to find someone for a part/roll? Many many times it is easier to find some who can act as X,Y,Z thing. Than it is to find some one who can act who is good at acting is popular enough to sell tickets and is X,Y,Z thing. I thought people wanted more trans representation in media why does it matter who is playing the trans person? Isn't the representation on its own enough? I guess it does not matter unless it is the "right kind of representation". Typical SJW double think and good enough never being enough. I mean for fucks sake people didn't get mad at Benedict Cumberbatch for playing Alan Turing a historical figure who was gay in the movie The Imitation Game. Benedict Cumberbatch is straight last time I checked.

For me the biggest issue is that trans people don't really get hired to play cis people, so trans roles are really our only chance to participate at all. But lets say they couldn't find a trans man (though I don't believe they looked) to play the role, why hire a woman? Men are played by men, women by women, it's weird and makes us think they just see trans men as women in suits.

When Eddie Redmayne played a trans woman, it was because the film was about her transition. Casting a woman who has transitioned would be very difficult and potentially mentally draining on the actress. So if ScarJo is playing a role in a film about someone's transition; fine, whatever. But if the film isn't about the real life person's transition, wouldn't it be best to cast a man? Trans or Cis, I feel like a male playing a male character is somewhat of an improvement. If A Quiet Place can cast a deaf girl to play a deaf girl, you can at the very least cast a man to play a man. That's just my opinion though.

Show the struggle of being a man trapped in a woman's body. But if the story isn't focused on their transition but on their identity living as a man, cast a man, trans or cis, whoever can do it justice. But I'm not a casting director, I'm someone commenting possibilities on a youtube video.

On the Scarlett Johansson issue. I'm sick of seeing people being put down for taking work because others feel a group of people should have gotten the role. Scarlett is a movie star. People are going to see the movie to see her, she's going to bring the audience. This is not a knock on trans actors, but I don't know a single one. I personally am not going to go see a movie on a story I don't particularly find interesting/care about, especially if the actors are nobodys. Also since when is it a crime to take a job. When accepting a job offer in an industry am I supposed to ask "are there any other minorities applying for this job, because if so I don't want to take their opportunity"? No. This is America. You look out for yourself and make the best decision for you.

The person portrayed was biologically female and cosmetically changed themselves to appear as a man so I don't understand why it'd matter as long as someone can portray the role properly through their actions and costuming.

transgender is indeed something much deeper than the surface level stuff but for the most part, most transgender people keep their physical transitions merely cosmetic, much like Tex Gill, he still had a vageen. personally i think Scarlett is far too traditionally attractive to play the part, they need someone much more burly and rough around the edges to be convincing.

I think the problem is that this kind of casting is what's keeping trans people from becoming known, especially in hollywood. They don't often get roles, even within the obvious sector: the few stories that involve trans characters. Lack of representation in the mainstream (of real members of the community, not just portrayals of dramatized characters) is a serious issue that's keeping many communities from being fully freed from discrimination.

Here's the problem with the whole "they could find a trans man to play the role" argument. Trans people make up at most 1% of the population right now, if we're being generous. Fewer of them will be female to male. Even fewer of them have completed or even started transition. Even fewer who are post-transition are open to the public about it. Even fewer have any acting experience (based on models of the entire population), and even fewer of those will have physical qualities that match what the producer is looking for. Hollywood can't just find these people without expending tons of resources and invading privacy. I would think trans folk would celebrate that their identity is being normalized by Hollywood, but instead many of them (and the people who fight for people who never asked for someone to fight their battles) are complaining that they are being cheated of their "right" to play a role. You aren't owed even a movie about a trans person, much less a trans actor playing that role. So keep that in mind. This movie will help normalize trans identity, which should be a cause for celebration, not denigration. Hollywood will base future decisions about trans characters on these reactions and the scandal, and they may choose never to do a normalizing trans role again. Don't ruin this for your community.

Babzi V Yes and no. Just because something isn't ideal doesn't mean it shouldn't be done. What we had was a movie where the protagonist was trans. That's a huge step in the right direction that has now been lost because it wasn't the _perfect_ step in the right direction. Hollywood is not known for risk taking. Hiring Scarlett Johansson was a pretty solid way to guarantee that people would see it. It would also bring people who were otherwise unaware that the character was trans, and who might have had their opinion of trans people changed by this movie. You don't send a message if you're only sending it to the people who already agree with you. You don't move closer to normalizing an identity if the only people who are going to watch the movie are those who think trans people are just super. In fact, I would say that having a trans actor right now would hurt the message because there would be people put there who don't watch it BECAUSE the actor is trans. That hurts it. Remember how I said Hollywood doesn't take risks? Let's say for the sake of argument, they do this one time and hire a trans actor whom no one in the general public has heard about. Great news, right? Complete representation! Now let's say the movie is panned by audiences and just doesn't do that well. How likely is Hollywood to take that risk again? How likely is that trans actor to ever be cast for a role in a Hollywood movie ever again? The odds are next to none. If this movie flops, Hollywood as a whole will not take it to mean they should just hire a trans actor next time. It will tell them that people don't want movies about trans people, and trans actors can kiss goodbye whatever hopes and dreams they had of making it big in Hollywood.

That is not how people become A list actors. It's years of hard work, smaller projects and knowing important people. Getting into big role isn't about being trans for a trans actor, it's about the acting skills, acting exprience, and the looks of the people involved. Black actor might get a role because they're black because the plot ot source material demands it, but people can ACT as trans people (therefore the name "actor", they act as other people) Of course, being gay might be good thing for a role if you need to do a gay kiss. Although most A-list actors can kiss their own gender pretty easily, so it's more about being able to kiss men than being attracted to them. Only thing in acting outside of your skills and people you know that can get you a job is your looks. Sadly, trans people don't look different from cis people. Color of skin, body type, hairtype, eye color, handsome/cute/beutiful factor, and resemblance to other actors are only things that matter for the "looks" section. Being trans therefore does not give any advantages or disadvantages inherintly to acting. Trans is rare thing, just like A-list acting. Seeing trans that is ALSO an A-list actor is super rare.

And not just transgender, a transgender man. Laverne Cox is good, but she's a woman. Elliot Fletcher is a male transgender actor, but probably too young for the role. I can't think of any others.

Kind of hoping you cover the KZbin Partner Program reviews going on lately. A lot of channels have been left with a "your channel is being held for further review" and being told they should just keep uploading original content and that their channels will be reviewed "in the near future". They've refused to be any more specific and honestly for claiming that KZbin will be working on better communication with creators, this action is both hypocritical and hurtful to content creators who've been waiting for 3+ month to be reviewed and are now left waiting for "the near future"

Mike Boglio he ain't wrong, it took 4 years from the first mass demonetisation for ANYONE to say anything. And even then, it was because the big KZbinrs got hit with it too. Still never heard of anyone outside of that first mass demonetisation speak on it. Which is hilarious cause it points to a huge corruption scandal in online advertising. Just imagine EA demanding that a whole game be hidden and discourage anyone from making content about it. And KZbin literally killing around 10 channels to appease them. All because a they where at risk of losing sales of the battlefield franchise.

I’m proud but not extremely proud, I understand that our country isn’t perfect and I do believe that Americans can be ignorant just like in every nation. Lots of wars we shouldn’t have been in and I don’t think we should have guns (I own a gun).

Actors pretend to be someone they’re not when they take on a role. That’s what an actor is. It’s reasonable to expect them to educate themselves on the experiences and worldview of the person they are playing. It’s NOT reasonable to expect the personal experiences of the actor to match those of the role they are playing, that’s ridiculous and antithetical to what it means to be an actor. The best standout performances of all time are from those people who don’t have the same experiences as their character, but who take on the persona so convincingly that they become that person on screen (think Dustin Hoffman as Rainman).
