Most people ‘buy’ on finance and only really care about monthly payments, at least in the UK. Brand new cars are often cheaper per month than second hand cars when ‘brought’ like this because of manufacturer incentives. They don’t care about depreciation because they hand the car back after the end of the finance term (typically 2-4yrs).

PLUS, this is depreciation from list price. Many of these cars will be heavily discounted from new, which this analysis doesn’t take into consideration. I ran an analysis before buying my Golf, which is supposed to hold onto its value. You know what, the VW dealers weren’t discounting as much as Ford and Vauxhall dealers, for the Focus and Astra. All things told, if you included the discount the Ford and Vauxhall dealers were offering, all of them had very similar depreciation, percentage wise after 3 yrs.

In my experience usually the high end versions of certain cars lose just very little in value. For example a Golf R or a Audi RS3. The prices are really strong since years. Or cars like the Mercedes CLA is still really high up there. Even after 3 years of ownership you don't really lose much money.

I‘ve once rented a Ford S-Max with a tiny 1.5 turbo engine and manual gearbox. Driving in mountanious southern France and northen Italy is absolutely a torture, not for the driver but for the clutch. After climbing some very steep streets it would take quite a while for the burning smell of clutch to dissipate.

This is a good indicator of what cars to consider buying at 3 years old. However it’s pretty optimistic to think that you can pick up cars at the trade in values mentioned in the video. If you are lucky, after fees you will end up paying a few percentage points above the retail price at a trade auction (if you can even get into one these days). Plus you will have to pay cash or via bank transfer after the auction.

Once these cars come out of warranty the servicing and repair costs are the direct responsibility of the new owner. Garage costs in the U.K. are astronomical, so the (relatively) low purchase price of these at 3 years old reflects the risk and uncertainty of ownership. More and more people are going for fixed-cost leasing which gives peace of mind and the allows for precise budgeting. Buying one of these second hand in the U.K. is a very risky business - you would be unable to sleep at night for the fear of the size of the garage bill if a dashboard warning light came on for example.

@@robertratkaj1189 you understand how a PCP deal works? Carwow is not spreading lies, it's stating the optional final payment on a 36 month finance with 8k miles/year. Call a dealer and ask for a PCP quote on one of the models, you'll see this is correct.

@@reececollison5101 the optional final payment is sometimes seen as the value after the agreement. That's what the finance company has left to recoup from their purchase of the car. In my (admittedly simple) understanding, the finance payments cover the depreciation as well as some cost for borrowing the money and then you can choose to buy the car from them. If you opt not to, they will need to sell it to cover the costs and that is the value they put on it. So the optional final payment doesn't reflect the value after 3 years as much as it IS the value and the finance deal is worked backwards from there. Someone with more knowledge of this should feel free to correct the above if necessary.

When I bought my Fiat Bravo new in 2007 ppl told me "you are crazy, yeah its cheaper than a golf or octavia but it depriciates so fast"... Well here we are, almost 14 years later and car is still running no problem and I feel no need to change it, so who cares! I mean, everyone leases cars to not lose on depriciation and think they are clever, but the best is not to change cars like they are socks. If its fine, keep it. No rust, 7 airbags, comfy... My V90 Cross Country: £51,000 list price 2 years ago. It was returned to the lease company, I watched it on the BCA Auction sell for £18,200 (and then went for sale at a Volvo dealer for £22,000). 64% lost in two years trumps everything on this list. According to the finance documents, it cost the lease company £36,000 to buy it, so the real depreciation was £17,800... but I only paid £8,000 to lease it, so they still lost almost £10,000. Ouch.

This is actually bunkum. I had this argument with a "past" Senior Editor at CAP when they were based in Skipton North Yorks. You try to buy a 3 years old whatever with a recorded 24k miles ....rare as Hen's Teeth.... so the solution is that you do not sell to the Motor trade who are in a nutshell simply "latter day Horse traders" The Senior editor agreed with me that that such a car would fetch a premium on the figures quoted in the Black Book !

The bigger issues are; is servicing expensive after 3 yrs, are parts cheap and or relatively available, are there lots of non-dealer mechanics (tends to be more useful in premium brands) and did the brand sell enough that you can find goid used parts. Also the best cars are often the premium makes as more money as invested in parts vs penny pinching is standard brands. I'd consider the lexus and volvo but wonder if the hybrid engines were worth it. Most of the premium cars tend to do small mileages even the A8/BMW7.

I bought a 2006 Suzuki Ignis 4x4 in 2013 in cost me £3350, with 31K on the clock. Sold it June 2020 for £1250 with 78K, within 24 hrs of advertising it. Very basic car with agricultural handling but I loved driving it, 100 % reliability. Not bad then. Have a Vitara now, brilliant car. Suzuki are very underated, don't loose as much as premium brands, very reliable.

In South Africa you can buy a Land Cruiser V8 pick up, drive it for a year (20,000km/12,500miles) and sell it for the exactly the same price. My friend did so in November. People are lining up for them.

And as you may have seen defferences are small in terms of !%! (Not in €/$/£ a more expensive car is going to lose more obviously) so just becouse toyotas keep more of thier value it dosent mean they are “laughing”, it translates to 1/2 or maybe 3% wich means a few thousand in money, wich is better of course, but certanly not superior or in another league. I like toyotas they are pretty reliable (just like other cars if you visit the mechanic in the reccomanded time frame) but i rather spend my time in a german car with 240-310hp (not performance model) than in a 150 avensis... yes my dear hp comes at a cost, manufacturers have to fit expensive new technologys to the cars to make it as strong as it is and also meet the strict co requiremants etc.... and those parts usually break, but thats in the service manual that you have to change it! But people ignore it becouse they “spend all thier money on a monkey but have no money left for bananas” and when the part fails, its usually the manufacturers fault becouse “why cant they make a car with 200+hp and without these parts” and the answer is emmission laws. And then they swear they never going to buy another german car, but when they ralize those raliable cars are 116-150 hp and they are reliable becouse they are as simple as a wodden doorknob they buy a german car again. Its the circle of life 😃. Thats why you can chose an amazing amount of 1 or maybe 2 engines in a japanese car becouse thier engines dosent meet eu laws, and those cars that do with a decent amount of hp (lexus) are just as unreliable as any other. But i rather say they just require more maintanace🙂 maybe just maybe, thats why the new supra is a toyota branded bmw z4, becouse toyota dosent have an engine with high enugh power that can be sold in the eu😃 its logic.... i know i know you are going to come at me with the “150 hp is more than enugh” and yes it is, for you, for me? Its not even close, i am working with my car, doing lots of highway trips, i need to be fast and i need good economy, wich means a german 3.0 liter diesel best performance/economy for the €... if i where to be everywhere my bosses want me to be and i was to drive a 150hp avensis i would have been fired for a long time now. Belive me i tried a 2.0 diesel not even 170hp is enugh. Also other people have different driving styles, i for instance do not fallow a truck on the highway with a 100kph for better fuel economy, not everyone is a cheapshot. Also to be honest toyota is not laughing at all becouse like it or not electric is the future, we have a few more years with combustion engines left, and toyotas full electric cars are light years behind everyone, and also with electric cars the “we are making cheap reliable cars with 50 years old technology so we can keep them low cost/reliable” is not going to work and they know this.😃 becouse the best selling point of toyota (reliablity) is not really a big consern with electric cars, no combustion engines, less parts etc... 🙂 so i hope i was able to dispell your confusion about toyotas. My comment was a joke btw, i love every car for different reason, and i do not argue about preferances😃 just becouse you think i am a fool becouse i buy these german cars, and i could save more money with a toyota dosent actually make me a fool😃 leave managing my money to my account manager. Also cars (for some of us) are not just a tool to get us and the family from A to B. I keep a 3.0 liter petrol coupe for a weekend car, wich i do enjoy driving etc, and. 3.0 diesel for work. @@dailyrant4068 the cars are not even in the same “league”, one is a premium product with higher than average power output and millions of extra features aimed at people who dosent mind spending 80.000€ on a car and who dosent mind !!!DOING!!! the reccomanded service in time (wich is really costly).... and those reliable cars they always talk about are usually family cars starting as low as 20.000€ with a 150hp and all the latest texh (bluetooth, maybe a touchscreen, heated seats) but thats pretty mich it, you might be able to get nice leather seats or a black headliner or maybe a +2 speaker “audio system” but thats the end!!! The cars usually have a 2.0 liter engine at best, they very in power but 99.9% is about 116-150 hp with a few exceptions like mazda having a 2.2 d and around 170-200hp but thats the top of the line version wich is 1. not that cheap to begin with 2. ordering a japanese car to the eu as costumized (they do send out cars wich you can see or buy at the dealers but those are speced by the factory or the dealer if you want anything else you need to order) and its a nightmare they are going to take at least half a year to arrive for a relased car becouse i am not talking about pre orders! Also they are not aganist each other, they serve diff. markets, a guy who is able to spend 80.000€ on an audi/bmw/mercedes and wants and likes luxuary/performance and also can afford maintanance is not going to buy a 4 cylinder mazda with 130 hp becouse its cheaper! -and as i have mentioned above those cars that are in the same league as these luxuary sedans are just as costly to keep up as other! And that bring us to my 2. point wich is those luxuary sedans japanese make are actually more expensive to maintain properly/fix becouse in the eu we have 0 aftermarket parts for them! only factory wich is €€€ territory! And when i say aftermarket i dont mean cheap stuff from ebay but reputable brands (For example Bosch or Hella) making !!!OEM!!! parts that are 100% factory quality if not better and a good couple hunderds € less than the “original” from the factory (in case of a really expensive part like a particle filter) keep in mind that examples are random i do know that hella for exmaple dosent make particle filters! My brothers best fried is a mechanics, and he has hes own shop, a big one, he owned a lexus, it was a fine car he wanted to fit coilowers to make it lower. He could only order from japan becouse european brands like bilsten etc dosent make any for lexus and the taxes would almost 3X the price, so good quality but not that great coilover set wich would cost around 750€ from bilstein becouse it wasnt the top of the line thing would have costed well above 3000€ for an average coilover made in japan😂 thats not worth it! Sidestory he managed to find a “fool” in a eu county who ordered it in and now was selling it at a “reasonable” price and it was still above a 1000€ taxes and everything included and that s/#t was USED 😂 All i am saying is every car has a “drawback” and everybody needs to decide what they can live with or can pay for. I just dont like when people “jump on the bandwagon” (well sad by fellow commenter) becouse the bad reputation of the german luxuary sedans comes from secound hand owners 99% of the time, the guy who, if he has 20.000€ for a car is going to buy a car for exactly 20.000€ and going to spend 2 whole seasons on the same worn out summer tires, the guy who only take it to the mechanics when vehicle inspection is due, the guy who thinks he can buy a fine tuned petrol engine with over 300hp and only needs to change oil every 20.000km, and those who literly think an engine should just run without any maintanace or changing the oil in the gearbox if its automatic etc etc etc. Main point is that every car has an upkeep cost, and the finer cars usually have more. Now there have been mistakes with german brands like bmw diesels catching on fire but those cars are recalled, fixed for free, and every other manufacturer doe that, mazda recalls some from time to time and EVERY SINGLE brand made a mistake at one point, and we cant german cars unreliable becouse one manufacturer made a mistake with !!!1!!! car/engine from thier usually 15 car lineup😃

Cars are a depreciating asset . And it would decrease when you’re going to sell. It’s not a plot where you’ll get in return. So, I would say that go for a car which suits ur budget or get what you love to drive. Majority of owners would drive their cars to a certain time where they’ve loose what they’ve spend on when getting a new one. So, if you’re wanting a good return when selling. Make sure your car’s condition is top notch and polished exterior/interior to get a good offer! BTW Happy New Year, may this year be full of joy, happiness, health & wealth! Of course the key is to bag a big discount when buying brand new. I bought a brand new Renault Clio in 2007 for 23% below list price. There were a lot of car discounters around at that time - the one I bought from was selling cars for wholesale plus £250. Nowadays it seems that the market is much tighter and I wouldn't want to buy any car brand new today - also too much dodgy technology to go wrong with newer cars, all buiilt down to a minimum cost but then marketed with maximum flash. My current car (2014 Fiesta - bought only a few weeks ago) is cursed with auto stop-start which has just killed the battery in very short order. I barely had time to realise that I really should have switched off that function before I ever drove the car.

In the US the Lexus LS is known for keeping its resale value closest to its MSRP. New: $75,000 After 25,000 miles: $55,000-60,000 I guess the UK is just weird. Measuring the gap between list price and trade in price is only part of the story - if you get a good discount off the list price (easy to do for many cars) the depreciation is much better - plus selling privately rather than doing a trade in can also reduce the over-all costs, of course. Many of the cars with the worst theoretical depreciation also attract the biggest discounts when new.......
