it seems you mixed Schaumburg-Lippe and Lippe-Detmold, or rather you thought they were the same. In fact both were distinct countries and later they stayed distinct member states. Also their main denomination was distinct: Schaumburg-Lippe was Lutheran, while Lippe-Detmold was reformed (with a sizeable Lutheran minority).

Historical you are right, my friend. But let me tell you this: From the comments here I see that some Germans regret that Germany is smaller today. Yet the size of a country says nothing about the life of its people. Russia is about 397 times bigger than Denmark. But the Danish are considered the happiest people on earth. Where in this ranking you might find the Russians?

@brittakriep2938

Wittelsbach dynasty splitted into two branches Bavaria and Palatinate of the Rhine. In 1770s one branch died out ( bavarian), so palatinate branch got also Bavaria, they moved from Mannheim to München. I don't know the exakt year, but Bavaria lost smaller western part ( Palatinate). This Palatinate and former prussian province Rhineland are nowadays german state Rhineland - Palatinate/ Rheinland - Pfalz.

Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt is more strange. A northern and a southern part. Plus several more enclaves. Between Bavaria and the Bavarian Palatinate, there are actually Baden and Hesse. During the HRE there were much more territories. And such strange borders were normal. Territories were expanded by purchase, marriage etc. This often let to scattered territories. After the end of HRE in 1806 most of those territories were absored by the big ones, while some with good connections remained independent. Since the early 14th century the Wittelsbach dynasty ruled over the Electoral Palatinate and the Grand Duchy of Bavaria (the south-east of modern Bavaria). After the Bavarian branch died out, the Wittelsbach branch of the Palatinate ruled also Bavaria. A personal union but still independent territories. In the HRE the Prince Elector of the Palatinate was the more important position, as it was one of the 7-8 electors who elected the German King (and Emperor of the HRE).

@@martinstock : At first there had been seven Electors: The Prince bishops of Mainz, Köln and Speyer, the King of Bohemia, the Duke of Saxony, the Marquis/Margrave of Brandenburg and the Palatinate Count of the Rhine, in late 17th two had been added: The Dukes of Bavaria and Hannover. In 1803 , before Napoleon changed the borders of german language countries, the situation was strange: Prussian King was Elector of Brandenburg, Habsburg crownprinze was King of Bohemia, British King was Elector of Hannover and one Person, head of Wittelsbach dynasty was Elector both for Palatinate and Bavaria.

It's Alsace-Moselle, not Alsace Lorraine, people make the mistake because the Germans said "Lothringen". I'm from this area, for those (who often are not even Germans) that say Alsace is German, you should know that under the German empire, Alsace never really integrated into the Empire, the kaiser Wilhelm recognized this truth in 1913. Sad remark though : The amount of architectural beauty lost in WW2 in Germany is absolutely tragic, as an architecture lover i'm just horrified...
@leopoldiv2341
@leopoldiv2341 3 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. I already knew before, that the Reichsland Alsace-Lorraine (dt. Elsass-Lothringen) never contained whole Lorraine and only a small part of it. But also in the offical constitution of the German empire this land was still called Alsace-Lorraine, and this name was also taken over by English and American history books. But I agree with you about its integration: They never had an own parliament in the German Empire and were directly ruled by the emperor. Also the German constitution talked clearly about 25 states, not 26. You won't be able to find Alsace-Lorraine as an official German state in this constitution. During the German-French War 1870/71 there was a high euphoric mood in the German population and the idea of taking the Alsace back (200 years after it was taken by King Louis. XIV) was cursing around. Bismarck (who was smart, but not very morally) then annexed the Alsace and the parts of Lorraine, which were still speaking German at that time (also some geostrategic matters played a role, while he was drawing the border). But names are generally a strange thing in history^^: France is calling Germany Allemagne, but Allemania is only the South-Western edge of Germany, and if you would call for example a Bavarian an Alleman, he would feel very offended.^^ I am from Palatinate btw, that's the area right above the Alsace^^.

@@leopoldiv2341 Haha hey neighbor !! Thank you for this info i learned stuff. :) Also there was different phases i think, at first Alsace-Lorraine was in a state of "diktatur", than the kaiser cut loose but re-impose the diktatur before WW1. There was also a disgrading term to talk about the Alsacien and Mosellans "wackes" which was used to mock the "Frenchified" Germanic people and then the Savern affair exploded and i think obliterated any possibility for a German Alsace. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zabern_Affair However i also now that the kaiser was very willing to integrate Alsace, he restored the high Koenigsburg castle, he created big urban projects in Strasbourg (which is now imo one of the most beautiful european city as it mixes French and German styles everywhere), etc...complicated history. :)
@nivalupo5653
@nivalupo5653 3 жыл бұрын
@Aetius Yes, there was definitely a progress seen, how the people from Alsace-Moselle were in the beginning still treated like a foreign state. Over time they indeed became more german-like and treated as those. I've also heard that after 1871 many people really grieved their loss of the French Citizenship, they were really not happy about the german occupation. When France conquered Alsace-Moselle in the end of WWI, the french soldiers got a lot of applause by the people. What i actually wanted to say is, that even thought Alsace-Moselle got "germanized" in these 48 years (1871-1919), i think if you had let them choose themselves, they would even in the end of that period still have voted for France. ;)

@@nivalupo5653 : Alsace was part of HRE and conquered by Louis XlV in 1680. Lorraine also was part of HRE up to about 1740 . In this year the last real member vor Habsburg dynasty died without male heir, so his son in law, the duke of Lorraine was forced to give Lorraine to France , when he wants to be recognized as new emperor of HRE. So France got Elsaß by military attack ( easy against HRE devided into 300 states) and Lothringen by Erpressung ( don' t know english word) , but they call us germans bad people, when we conquered stolen territory back- double standard.
