The 2S38 Is Absolutely Broken

I didn't think the new War Thunder update "Fire and Ice" would cause much trouble. Sure, most of the new Finnish tanks are copy-paste, but the devs didn't appear to be adding any vehicles that were overtly broken or overpowered. That was until they announced the premium 2S38 light tank just a day before the patch dropped. They likely did this because they knew it would receive a lot of backlash. The 2S38 is actually a SPAA vehicle that hasn't entered service yet, but Gaijin is calling it a light tank so they can sell it as a premium. The 2S38 is arguably on par with or better than the HSTV-L and OTOMATIC which both sit at a battle rating of 10.7 in ground realistic battles. The 2S38 sits at 9.7. Not only does it get powerful APFSDS, but it also gets APHE, proxy, 3rd gen thermals, and IRST.

@John PUMA used to be busted. On release only a handful of tanks at or below BR that had APDS that could reliably defeat the extreme angle of the UFP (otherwise the engine eats the round) and it was borderline immune to HEATFS outright.

​@John main strength of Puma is that it's in good line up right now. It and Begleit form first wave of NATO offensive at this BR and they cover weaknesses of each other. Puma has staying power, Begleit has offensive power, both are fast and both can ruin early heli spawns. This thing and PT-76-57? They're solo menaces.

@@EasyAL_YT There are currently two bugs that have been affecting the Oto for about a year. 1. The Oto's tracking radar, the VPS-A06 should be able to track targets +/-90 degrees from the front of the turret but currently on tracks about +/-10 degrees. You can't lead a jet without losing lock every single time unless it's flying directly at you. 2. The IRST is tied to the gunner and commander optics and isn't tied to the radar mast at all. IRST is currently only usable with the radar mast up. So you are forced to have the search radar, the VPS-A05, up making your already massive profile larger and allowing any jets with RWR to immediately know they're at least being detected.

I hope they fix the issues you raised and maybe even increase the apdfs pool it gets access to seeing how the new Russian 2S38 can carry apdfs without limit.

What's completely absurd with this vehicle is how out of this world is its tankiness. Most things should just obliterate it according to its defensive characteristics, but something paranormal seems to happen when you shoot at it, making it absurdly tanky. At some point there must be some parameters they can adjust to improve the survivability of a vehicle out of nowhere and make it more or less OP.

It's a classic strategy. Make OP vehicle, everyone rushes to buy it. After several weeks when sales die down, put it's BR up to a respectable level. Few months or years later, announce you're going to remove it from the store so everyone rushes to buy it again. After it's gone, add a new OP premium and repeat.

What’s so good about it? The only fun new vehicle that isn’t premium or top tier is the as42/47 (and it’s not really that fun). I also got more bugs then usual, for example sometimes I can’t stop repairs, which got me killed twice.

Gaijin increased HVST-l's BR because it was "too op" in 9.7 with 275mm pen and 1.5 reload, they put it in 10.7 and now Gaijin drops a Russian version with 225 pen and 0.5 reload in 9.7 Gaijin doesn't longer hide the Russian bias... Uhmmm sorry the "Skill Issue"

I heard someone mention that it is now possible to put together a high tier lineup comprising solely of GE vehicles are high tier for USSR. Do a USSR wallet warrior lineup: 9.7: T-72AV, BMP-2M, 2S38, Su-25K, Mi-24D 10.7: T-80UK, BMP-2M, 2S38, T-72M2 or AV, Ka-50

The OTOMATIC has a larger cannon but it does less damage than this gun or the 40mm Bofors, fantastic

And it gets a really good lineup you can just buy. You can use the TURMS premium, this premium, and even the BMP-2 squad vehicle. All three are really strong or even overpowered. If you have it, you can go to 10.0 if you have the T-72 moderna (I think, the one with an autocannon). And you can buy the Su-25 frogfoot for CAS. A complete 3-4 land vehicle lineup with CAS, all straight purchasable. And the 2S38 even works as SPAA, sort of. Either 9.7, or 10.0

The survivabilty is insane while the A-10 feels like paper plane, the Frogfoot can eat so much 20mm HE it's hilarious. Better flight performance, Better A/G ordnance. I'll give you one thing though. I would much rather have 4x AIM-9Ls than 2x R-60s so that's one downside that I can think of. Hell in GRB the A-10 spawns going 300 km/h while other faster aircraft spawn almost at their top speed, and Mach 1.0 capable aircraft spawn at Mach 1 or right below. Mavericks are dogshit that either don't track correctly half the time or do little to no damage (track vehicles) even when hitting the target directly From what I know Kh-25/29 don't have that problem since you can guide them in apart from the fact that you need to be pointing the plane toward your target. Hureers? You mean Harriers? Pretty much the only broken one was GR.1 and the only thing going for it were the SRAAMS but it was moved to 10.0 and pretty much is food now... Besides this is not what I'm saying, obviously there are other broken vehicles: XP-50, Su-11, PUMA to name a few... I'm talking about the fact that when you think about which faction constantly gets the biggest number of OP vehicles that ruin the game the answer is going to be Russia every single time, pretty much no matter who you ask. Yeah, sure... has any of these tanks broke the game... no they haven't they are literally copy paste of one another but with better thermals... God bless gaijin (/s) for kindly adding Abrams' with usable thermals. The AIM is just a tree M1A1 with Gen 2. thermals but with worse shell, the SEP is just M1A2 with Gen. 2 thermals and an additional .50 for the gunner (truly broken OP vehicle /s). Meanwhile the BVM has been a shell eating menace for how long now? A year? A year and a half?

@@jakub-k like turms or bvm is anything else than a copy paste of existing tanks with better thermals and that’s all. A10 is a great plane as well, one of the best choice to grind the tree, easiest plane to make 3k+ points and 1st place during the events, and mavericks are way better armament for top tier than ones that su25 has. Who cares how much 20mm it can hold when 99% of the time you die from a missile or proximity shell? At least A10 can use his armament without actually going into proximity shell range. I’ve played both and A10 is way easier to use in mixed battles for sure. These complaints feel more like “Germany suffers” whining rather than an actual weighted critique.

Proxy does not set off nords because nords do not have a proxy fuse + in WT shooting missiles is incredibly hard. Another example would be that Ka-50 vikhr triggering SAM missiles. They do trigger the missiles and the massive SAM missile explodes but does nothing to the Vikhr. In reality it should destroy the atgm as it proxys but it doesn't.

Can you talk about how under equipped the new M1A2 SEP is compared to what it is irl? The missing depleted uranium on the lower plate (well known from many sources), the absence of additional armour on the turret side (about 100mm), and also arguably the absence of M829A3. Finally all abrams should have much more than 67mm of armor on the turret ring, with estimates being closer to 300 on the M1A2 SEP.

Also, the .50cals should get SLAP rounds wich would help tremendously against light vehicles. Moreover, you should be able to remove the TUSK package without losing smoke grenades! Yes, all smokes are gone if you remove it:/. I could go on, but this doesn't seem like just laziness from Gaijin, it looks deliberate because this info is not hard to find. It is basic logic that the M1HC and M1A2 sould not have the exact same hull armor as the basic M1.

PLEASE spread the word of a fix. Temp fix for all remote turret vehicles. Turrets can be damaged by simply penning it. The entire turret is a module. That meaning no more no damage turret shots to the puma, striker, or 2S38. 90mm and up should straight black the turret module. 20mm and what not would have to land multiple hits to break it much like everything else they hit. Meaning they would have to fall back and repair. This will be a HUGE plus to fighting these things. It needs to be addressed. There isn't just empty space in these turrets. Should they get hit with a main cannon shell it would harm the electronics and turret drives. It blows my mind that this isn't a feature.

This thing literally slings a shell basically equal to DM13 (the 105 dm13 apparently I need to say that lmao. Figured people could use their brains) fully automatic at a BR where it can face tanks that shoot DM13 once every 9 seconds. I have seen people compare it to the PUMA but it is literally on another plane of existence higher compared to the PUMA. And I just finished the absolutely painful PUMA stockgrind, now I cant play it because the entier enemy team gets to play a flat better version

What the F do you even mean with DM13? The 120mm DM13 with close to 400mm pen? And are you a level 2 player which bought a Leo A1A1 with a noob crew or what do you mean with 9 seconds??? So much BS it makes no sense but yea it should not be compared to the PUMA but rather because they have so many different advantages. I mean does this thing have better armor? Can this thing make good use of it's unmanned turret with good gun depression and cannon hight? Can it fire all the darts without reloading? No because it's not a "flat better version" then the Puma. But it is a good AA and has more pen, it is different and you should play it different, more like a strf 9040C with more pen but worse spalling for some reason. Just don't play light tanks as long as the 2S38 spam is not over.

@@miuu7616 DM13 the 105mm stock german shell for all the leo 1s. it has 303mm of pen and 116mm of pem at 60 degrees. 3UBM22 has 225mm of pen and 130mm of pen at 60 degrees. 3UBM22 therefore being very comparable to DM13. Not the 120mm DM13 that should be extremely obvious to anyone with functional brain but the 105 DM13. And the Leo 1s have a stock 8.7 second reload. Sure its 6.7 aced but most people arent using fully aced crews at 8.7. As for the puma VS 2S38. The armor on the Puma USED to be pretty good. Now it only sometimes stops some auto cannons at its br, the armor is a none factor anymor and the S238 is actually more survivable since the crew is layed out horizontally meaning it is very difficult to kill two of them with one shot frontally. Really the only thing the puma does better is the Puma has better gun depression. But that doesnt really matter since the puma is extremely easy to ammo rack when hull down compared to the 2S38 that has a extremely small spot to hit to actually kill it when it is hull down. And yes the puma has blowout panels but for wome reason the ammo fire will almost always kill the gunner and like 50/50 also kill the commander before you can put it out... So dude maybe use your brain for 5 seconds before sperging out lmao
