Exactly, Sir! Courage, Physical strength and Appropriate skills are the fundamentals of fighters in all walks of life. Yet, what has caught my attention were the notions expressed by You Sir as if parallelly, may be just paraphrasing the main ideas. In my mind, however, Mindset, Determination (opposite of hesitation) and Timing of an action, are further dimensions helping beginner fighters, becoming if not invicible, but more successful, in tournaments. Best regards. Paul, retired instructor of Karate.

I used to do wing chun (shaolin wing chun Nam Anh kung fu) and they used to do a lot of sparring too without any gear or protection, with open hand strikes to the head, and groin hit too. They're actually very good compared to other wing chun schools. However, at my peak in that school, I also had a few street fights and I always went back to using muay thai on the street. Muay thai and boxing always seem to work since under street, we go back to very simple, effective techniques (punch, kick, knees, elbows). I've been doing kickboxing, boxing and mma ever since. I also lift weights for conditioning (about 220lbs). IMHO, if you stick to the basics and refine them, train regularly and work on your conditioning, that's all you need. Fighting isn't as complex with all the fancy moves you see in movies.Give someone a good 1-2 or a good right cross and if you nail him correctly, it's lights out.
@Awakenedmind333
@Awakenedmind333 Жыл бұрын
That’s something I noticed in a lot of boxing, especially bare knuckle. Usually just a well placed right cross is how most knock outs are done.

I attended two TWD lessons and the tutor said to me: " You know, I have lots of respect for Kung Fu, but it can't help you in a real fight, why do you bend so low? Where are you going to need it?" Meanwhile, the first thing someone does when attacking a woman is put her down on the ground and immobilize her to do the rest. So, other Martial Artists don't get to really know what kung fu is. In fact, they think is too difficult to master and they underestimate the inner and outer abilities you gain through constant practice. Thank you, Grand Master, thank you for all the sharing!

I am really excited about the idea of taking these ancient principles and traditional Kung Fu and bringing them up to date. Rich people say "both", Kung Fu merged with more recent MMA principles will be a powerful and effective thing. This is what Bruce Lee was trying to do with JKD. One big problem that Kung Fu has is that people think the internal styles are magical. They memorize the Yang short form, start to feel some inner stillness, learn to breathe a bit better and now they think they are invincible because they do an internal style. They have not tested themselves and they usually have bypassed the necessary step of doing externals first then moving internal after. They then book a fight with a local boxer or karateka and get thrashed all over the ring because they have no basics. It only took a handful of these guys on KZbin for all traditional arts to completely lose credibility. There are no shortcuts, several other good teachers I know learned external styles first- karate, boxing, eskrima/arnis, kajukenbo. The next step is Hsing-I, the bridge between external and internal. I can't wait to get going with your Hou Xin Xing-I course, it is the missing piece for me, I have been training hard in NYC here. And I have to say the Monkey Squat alone is life-changing and also thank you for the Black Friday sale!

Chunda8, What you describe has already happened, MMA has been around for quite some time already, and through the years it has been distilled to the arts that really work. forget about Kung Fu, any style, it doesn't matter, none of them work in modern combat, all that mystical internal stuff is fantasy. The ones that work are already proven, Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, BJJ, Kick Boxing. That's abou it.

I agree with most of what you said here. I trained wing chun in what many could label as a "mcdojo". I learned the first 2 forms, part of the 3rd and the wooden dummy form. The problem with just learning the form and no realistic application, sparring, etc is similar to body builder type muscles in the context of combat sports. Sure it could be useful in a combat sport situation but there is a lot more work required to actually be able to use it effectively and efficiently. I switched from wing chun to Muay Thai/Chaiya and jiu-jitsu and mostly because the training is just night and day different. I could take two guys of equal strength, speed, general athleticism, etc and have one train Muay Thai at a typical school for just 3 months and the other wing chun at a typical school for a full year. The muay thai guy is going to quickly dismantle the wing chun guy the vast majority of the time and it isn't because the muay thai techniques are just that much better than wing chun but rather that the muay thai training *is* that much better and even at a not-so-great muay thai gym. If a person wants to be able to actually use the techniques against a skilled opponent there has to be stress testing, sparring and both striking and grappling.

I learned the complete esoteric shaolin bucket iron cloth neigong system which descended from Grandmaster Jiufengzi. Anyone whos read the magus of java the internal qi training is the same as described in that book that John Chang was taught. This system is very different from common iron shirt styles because it's heavily involved with neiqi training in strange ways.

You can totally dismiss Wingshun or you can apply some minor applications in real fighting. Don’t think so? Ie. Jon Jones, does stuff that’s not supposed to work then you see him do it in fights. Mad respect to this guy tho he clearly knows what’s up. I’ve found you can apply circular movements of King Fu in traditional boxing. No limitations. He correct about 2 years of hard training for one competition against trained fighters. I won a provincial title in boxing, had 3 matches in 3 days. The mental side of it was key. I couldn’t sleep or eat well cuz of wanting to win so badly during said weekend. Was throwing up in between fights. Mental focus carried me thru as well as the solid 2 years of training for it. He absolutely correct the guy that fights the dirtiest on street is the winner. Show me a rule book for streets? Non existent. Physical strength/ power shots key. Power comes from base. Smart aggression, timing also. Guy has a wealth of knowledge. Can listen to this shit for hours

YES I totally agree with Grandmaster Jiang Yu Shan, all martial arts trainers should listen to this man such ability in kung fu ! But with some reservations , the warrior position or ego sate of males is largely ancenstral it is basically primtive and to do with distortions in the way we propcesss information , it is a fall back to an animalistic way of being ,survival of the finest , strongest most aggressive survive, this IF seen as a place to stay in is pathological and gives rise to all forms of ego centricity , barbarism etc . For example I use the Wim Hoff Cryo work down a stream over the past 2-3 years many many times consistently . It takes courage is unpleasant but beneficial etc , if I rush impulsively into it , jump in aghh , eventually disaster ! No I've formed an approach that allows me to meet the int resistance and the ext without impulsively stupidly , the mistakes occur as in my horrible cycling accidents when I get complacent , 20 years of cycling often in London then in 2019 braking hard and I slam into the tarmac with my right elbow , courage is also the ability to say to oneself STOP reflect , on the repercussions the consequences the safety etc , damage sone to the body is VERY difficult if not impossible to reverse . Do I need to fight of course not , should I fight not really , do I need the courage to fight if I should be called to defend myself YES , the three things are different , so we have all these warriors all this bloodshed and all this carnage for what , utter stupidity and mindlessness . So let us NOT put the Warrior as the summation of male development , or exalt this very limited position ! After all Wue Wei, the great sages teach in "meditation" IS superior to action why because I see internally the rage , the hatred and I can evenutllay think and feel this is my reaction if I act on it I will destroy a realithionhip and myself eventually . But yes generally I agree Courage and power or endurance or fitness and then skill , like learning anything . Go well R

The real purpose of the martial arts is moving meditation. This training, the forms, the qigong gives you strength, power and focus to apply to your seated meditation. I believe this is the real secret of the Shaolin path. The better your moving meditation, the higher the quality of your seated meditation. Progress with it this way is extremely rapid. The entire purpose of martial arts is really to become enlightened, in any complete system the fighting part is only a fraction of it, a side effect.

Well, i don't think it's wise to mock the so infamous question "does it work for MMA". Let me explain. Say wathever you want but MMA is, with leitwei or bareknuckle boxing the most "street fight" accurate combat sport or martial art. Sure, there are rules (because it's a sport) but go in the ring, fight and you'll see. So of course people are gonna appreciate and compare based on this combat sport. Because if you cannot do something in a ring under rules which are, again, the closest that you can get when it's about street fights, well, i understand the scepticism. And by saying that, i'm not saying TMAs have no benefits to train, on the contrary, i think it's great for the mind AND for the body but if your goal is to learn how to defend yourself and fight in a short amount of time: go for muay thai or MMA. And saying that is not jUdgMeNTaL against TMAs, it's just a fact...The issue (which is not an issue to be fair but there are a lot of ego behind this) with TMAs is that people do not spare or they rarely do. And when they do well: they are using boxing or kick boxing techniques.

I agree with a lot things mentioned in this conversation, however a draw the line when someone knocks another art like Wing Chun WC and say it doesn’t work for them hasn’t clearly trained in the art long enough to understand it and make it work for them! You can make anything work especially WC with a clear intention and application in practice and real life experience, and not for competing purposes, however some certain aspects of WC can be used in competition when in close quarters or when combined with kinetic striking movements but definitely not how they show it in the movies! It’s clear he don’t understand the fundamentals of Wing Chun when he compares the Wing Chun Chain Punch with a Power Punch! 🤦🏽‍♂️😂 The chain punches were designed for when you are retracting from an opponent that is advancing upon him and for whatever reason, whether that be due to injury or because you have gassed yourself out and is very rarely used in a combat situation or trying to expand on your opponent with the chain punch! It wasn’t designed for that purpose 🤦🏽‍♂️😂
