That tip about pulling the line on a loose drag to avoid the 3-line snarl is absolute gold. Since I learned that one - from one of your earlier videos I believe - it has eliminated SO many headaches. Dude, that drag tip on taking out loops in your braid is ingenious. It doesn't happen often, but when it does it makes a huge mess and if simply loosening the drag and pulling out the line in the loop fixes it. That's a super valuable tip.

Casting right into the wind is a great way to fish if you know how to do it, but it can be rough on a spinner for sure. Winds knots are a real pain. So that tip on how to pull a knot out is very useful! Plus, on something like a drop shot, which is notorious for line twist, I always use a barrel swivel.

Doing the math in my head.... I've been fishing spinning gear 43 years now. Todays stuff is lightyears better than those clunnky metal 300 A's from the late 70's. All good tips and I agree completely but the biggest cause of line twist on a spinning reel comes from playing fish using the drag. As the spool spins while a fish is running, it's twisting your line. If you play fish off the drag, line twist is an issue you have to deal with. Here in The UK a lot of anglers prefer to play fish by manually backwinding with the anti reverse turned off. This one thing pretty much eliminates all line twist completely. It's definitely a skill worth mastering.

Great tips! Closing the bail by hand is extremely important for a number of reasons- one of the biggest ones is the fact that the automatic bail trip via the handle impacts the main gear of your real at the exact same gear tooth every time. So constantly flipping your bail by using the handle puts a significant amount of wear and damage onto one specific tooth of your gears, and it is the quickest way to ruining the smoothness of your reel

Thanks Matt, I like that first one but I feel like a moron not knowing such a easy fix. I really don't have spinning reel issues any more though because of two things I do. One always close bail by hand and tug on line, two after spooling tie a good swivel to a fence/tree then to the end of your line and walk about 75% off your spool. Reel in maintaining tension. Here is the most important part, every 10 feet stop and release tension. The swivel will spin the fastest when you release tension. If you use the reel 15 or 20× I would repeat. All my spinning reel issues went away.

When using braid the line twist issues are lessoned, but if you fish a good bit, every so often just pull all your braid off the spool, then using a piece of sponge or some cloth, wet with one of the line conditioners, pinch the line tightly inside the sponge piece and reel it all back on with no lure tied on. You can actually watch the line twist coming out as you do this. Another trick is to cut your lure off, place the line in the water as you are idling in a boat and let the water flow pull half the line off the reel. Let that drag behind the boat a minute or two, then reel all the line back on and the line twist will mostly be worked out. That first tip is a really good one Matt, good job as always.

A few times a year i tie on a egg sinker with a swivel and make a bomb cast, for me.... that seams to get any line twist out. To be honest id rather fish a spinning real over a bait caster. maybe its because im so good with them but i feel the chances of backlash are higher and getting a loop out of a spinning rod takes me 10 seconds most of the time
@MattStefanFishing2 жыл бұрын
stick with what works the best for you!
@johnarcher9480 Жыл бұрын
Yep! A nice bomb cast with a heavy sinker, and a Baal bearing swivel gets the twists out. Been using spinning reals almost exclusively for 35-40 years. That, and making sure you don’t put too much line on the spool eliminate most problems. Of course, run a swivel with any inline spinner or whopper plopper.

I rarely have this problem or line twist problems. I can't remember when I've had issues like this. I guess it's because I've always manually closed the bail. Well ....ever since I was probably about 10 years old. I was just told that not manually closing it was a child's thing to do and nobody wants to hear that CLANG noise. Especially trout fisherman. It prolongs the life of your reel too. I've heard. I've read reviews of people (adults) actually sending their new reels back for a refund because their bail will not close automatically and giving bad reviews on great reels. I'm thinking that the person is nuts.....but they just don't know. Once you get used to closing the bail manually , it something you don't even think about ever again. I think I'm gonna start using small barrel swivels for fluorocarbon leaders. I've been removing them off of snaps for a while now 😅. Anyways , I subscribed. I'm not going to rant forever on a subject without subscribing. 😅

Again I'll offer this thing not to do. I even see Pro's do this one, you've got a good fish and drag is pulling out - don't turn the cranking handle ! Your putting twist in the line. Pull back than whine down. I tighten my drag to about 80 percent even on six pound line. The fight is give and take, they'll take some then I take it back. Till they get tired and give up.
@19empire852 жыл бұрын
Exactly, never reel against your drag!.. for multiple reasons but id say #1 is because it'll twist the hell out of your line. Thats pretty much common knowledge here on the great lakes for anyone who targets steelhead because they go on long hard runs, you could mess up a spool of line on one fish. Im always surprised when I see a pro bass fisherman just cranking away while their drag is just screaming, gives me an anxiety attack🤣🤣

For us bank anglers, don't throw your reels in the sand, don't submerge the reels if you can help it, don't put reels on the ground, esp rocks and hard surfaces. Basically don't scratch your reels. A scratched rod is nothing, but a scratched reel might impede the function of the reel. For example, if your spool lip is scratched with grooves or indentations, they can break your line or affect casting distance. I like to grease the fook out of the interior every once a year if I do heavy use. I know this is not the proper way but I like the reels to be smooth afook and be protected from water damage. Using the handle to engage the bail might mean you're going to wear out the spring faster. I tried to do it by hand most of the time. IDK, I just feel better having to not force it. A bailless might be the best option if you are proficient at it or just throwing stuff like swimbaits. Off course, I don't really know these things for sure. It would seem so. There's not really a need for the bail unless you are power fishing as in bass fishing. We should have an in-depth dicussion on this with elite bailless users who have used both setups for angling. Would be interesting to see. I think premium freshwater reels should all come with gaskets that last like the Plutonian material known as Mag Seal or just whatever that VanStaaly has. You know. People who wade like us demand a sumbergeable, dunkable reel like the ocean stuff for freshwater minus the weight. Why do you always have to sacrifice weight for seals? That's crazy when it is 2023. Some spinning reels are trash for various reasons. For instance, cheap reels have terrible drag like the Kast King stuff. You can't even find the drag. Either you are one click from too tight or too lose. A good drag doesn't have clicks but with like infinite turn. That's the bulk of the reel issue plaguing us. Others have plastic bail arms that get cut into by braid. For like around $100 or whatever, they can't afford to give you the decency of a ceramic or metallic bail arm....or a HyperWire spring, if there is such a thing. Just bc a reel has like 4 bearings should not mean it is not smooth. All too often this is the unfortunate case. Some reels have a higher percentage of line tangling under the spool in the shaft. Some have prevelant bird nest issues, esp using stiffer, bigger lines. That's sad. And it's a pain in the arse. Companies need to address this matter. There's nothing I hate more than a bailtrip closing on you. How many premium lures have we lost on this act alone? I know this is a tip on spinning reels, but I'm tipping the companies who manfacture these things. The issue may be poor design by them. It goes under the radar too much to let them go. It happens in great companies like Pflueger to Okuma to Shitmano to Chinese brands. It's time we demand more for our money on the forefront, addressing the minute root causes. The idea of purposefully selling cheap reels so you will upgrade annoys me. It's like an insult to my fishing expertise and intellect, to every arguable integrity I may hold. It's like making money in a dishonest way. It's like assuming that we are retarded. Like what the hell is wrong with these companies? I can see that if you pay less, you don't get a smooth or light reel, but do you really have to give me a crappy plastic for a bail arm or a cheap spring that will wear within a year or two? Why even market yourself like that, and then say you make the best reels? Why even build reels if you give them crap for a $30 reel. It's like being a con-artist who is faking it to make it. Why do you want to be known for that? Why do you keep taking our money just bc we are poor. We are poor, yet some of us are not dumb.

I agree with a lot of this including the weight issue. it seems like everyone is concerned with reel and rod weights. But in reality all of the equipment is so much lighter than it was years ago and at this point id rather have durable parts that way 1/4 oz more.

and don't reel if a fish is taking drag or if you are hung up and drag is slipping while you crank
