Unfortunately all three books (and like the countless he did not mention) contain absolute rubbish (as well) which could get one into serious trouble and or an uncomfortable situation. They are however, great to read to pass the time (and some are on my shelf) but if one believes that they can handle the wilds after reading them better go and learn from someone in the flesh on a real trip, not in a park close to the shops, someone's backyard etc. Where can I find such place/organisation? Try a university hiking or camping/caving club for a start. Avoid the TV celebs like the plague, because first and foremost, they are exactly that, TV celebs trying to make a buck away from TV. There are many myths propagated within such books, for example: the "fire reflector wall" type structures, just to mention but one of many.

Cody Lundin's books should be in anybody's survival library. At least or my first choice would be "98.1 Degrees, How to Keep Your Ass Alive". I do have copies of the SAS books, but Cody's books are smaller in overall size and easy to carry. And like Creek Stewart his advice is based on years of knowledge, real world scenarios and scientific facts and data. Older books like those by Bradford Angier or Tom Brown are good too, and while still relevant, like many older books they don't offer as many new tricks nor do they include modern gear. This also applies to military survival manuals which focus on using military equipment and exclude techniques or information on modern day camping, survival or everyday household items we can use. I also have many books such as the second one you had shown. The books have different authors, but all have good information, many hacks and nice photos, illustrations and drawings. They emphasize different aspect or types of survival, but all are good additions. For their resourcefulness and newer techniques and information, Creek Stewart's books are also very good choices.

@dannielharrison6449 Жыл бұрын
Yeah for sure man i read Hatchet in Middle school, its what really got me into learning survival, plants animals and ect. One of the best books ever, mainly bc everything in it was very realistic and very possible. It teaches a very important lesson, which is that it could happen to anyone and would most likely happen when unprepared and least expected. Regardless of a novel several similar events and situations has happened to others and all was very lucky. Also really describes well the human WILL to live. Ever since i read it i also no matter what, if i go out on the water or through woodlands i always make sure i have at least a full tang knife, lighter and/Or fire starter, cordage, and wearing some sleeves- jacket/sweater ect.. Also i have to mention that the book is special to me because, I grew up poor in a small town in Alabama, and for my 7th Bday my dad bought me a hatchet. One of very few gifts i ever got.

you dont need to know it all for survival. Just basics, shelter,fire and find and be able to drink water. Be bloody good at thoose 3 things and you will be fine. Building traps is and kill animal in them demand so much more knowledge than just making the trap. If you must have food fishing is far better. Ofcourse a nice pocket book can be nice to have along to practice some stuff in the woods.

Agreed about the size of the SAS Survival Guide, and the depth of information in it. A portable option that I've really found valuable is a basic Kindle loaded with survival titles. The very basic black and white Kindle keeps a battery charge for several weeks, and can literally carry around an entire library. I take mine backpacking, camping, and traveling with me.
@dannielharrison6449 Жыл бұрын
Gonna state the obvious here, your kindle gets wet because your hiking and fall in a river and your swept away by the current and end up miles away down river. Now you need to survive!! kindle is a good idea and all BUT thing is that book will dry out an can be read again and if it gets real bad you can use the pages to start a fire or burn to get some warmth. The kindle just aint as valuable in a survival situation. Its for camping in a RV.
