“Jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one….” that’s the full quote and it referred to Shakespeare’s massive and diverse talents. This quote is often used to undermine those with many interests or skills (but only because the second part is never included), but so in fact it is meant to highlight how much more valuable diverse knowledge is.

It sounds as if that statement is used to undermine greatness by those who cannot achieve it. And there has only been one Shakespeare, and he had only one skill.
@poleve54098 күн бұрын
@@Wmaddox333 shakespeare did not have one skill that is just a lie. Shakespeare was proficient in english, interested in politics and culture, worked as playwright and actor, etc. In fact the renaissance was a time when having multiple skills was necessary to be recognized as a genius. And when we look at history, do we ever see specialists in the list of famous people? Very rarely. It's always a "generalist" who was interested in many fields. Albert Einstein as an example. Even more recent "geniuses" are generalists and never specialists.

For the past three weeks I've restricted my media intake to Saturdays exclusively. Throughout the week I read, write, etc. It's been so amazing, I feel like I've been able to navigate my mind again and just sit in silence. Interestingly, when I use media with intent, I find that I'm done within a few hours. I seriously don't know what I used to watch all the time.

Although I want to rely on consistency more than motivation, having some motivation definitely helps.

Amateur ("Ham") Radio is creative in that you often need to create solutions to problems or needs: you need to make a proper cable for a transmission line, build an antenna from scratch, some operators even build their own equipment. It's definitely mind expanding: in one weekend I talked to operators in 18 different countries that even with the Internet I wouldn't have had any other way to connect with. Something about making the contacts, using your skill to make the most of radio propagation characteristics, atmospherics and so on - even hearing the background radiation from the center of the galaxy or radio signals emitted by Jupiter - gives you a sense of wonder and awe at how vast our world and our universe are. It can be an expensive hobby, but what a newcomer might find is that a lot of the older hams are happy to pass on their old equipment to make room for new equipment and to help get a new operator active in the hobby. I've honestly spent very little of my own money on equipment. 😅

Ham radio is a super super diverse hobby; there definitely could be creative aspects such as building radios/designing systems, but a lot of it is tinkering/adjusting your system or actually getting on the air and monitoring or communicating with both people that you know or people that you don't know. There is something called POTA which is basically where you go into the woods and see how many contacts you can make, there are a lot of emergency preparedness/emergency response related things, there is something called QRP which is basically where you try to see how many contacts or how far you can contact with as low power as possible, there is CW (morse code) which is very active still and quite relevant especially for QRP, etc... In the US you just need to take a test to get a Technician license (first of three levels) and then go get a cheap ($25) radio and start dabbling, it's pretty easy to get into and you can go as deep as you want without ever running out of things to learn/try/achieve. As far as building out a "skill tree," ham radio is definitely one of the most interesting hobbies that also unlocks or aids a bunch of other related hobbies/interests like electronics, emergency preparedness, hiking/offroading/overlanding, pilot license, DIY...

@3:35 Just food for thought, that may not be the best example of Good Health = Happiness/Feeling better. I've known from experience (after multiple varied injuries lol) that this feeling 'bad' about not being able to workout the way I want is more linked to perfectionism. I think this is a very modern problem we impose on ourselves (myself included) where we feel shitty because our workout isn't optimized as possible and we failed to reach that goal. Injuries are this to the maximum, because we are forced to limit ourselves to get better. But this limitation should still spark happiness in us because we're cutting back LITERALLY for our own health. But in reality we don't, because of perfectionism. Ah just ramblings of someone who endures OCD lol. Anyone another amazing video!

I'm currently doing a lot of hand stitching making a quiet book for my child. The current pages I'm focusing on are weather and the continents, and I made Montessori-style 3-part cards to go with them. It's been fun working on that stuff. One thing that may be helpful is something that another KZbinr, JashiiCorrin has done with her habit tracking. She uses a low bar - high bar system. So while the end goal may be an hour a day of each of these things, setting a low bar that's much more attainable can help foster a sense of accomplishment and may keep you from giving up because you can still see you're making progress.

Observing people, interacting with others, consuming the world basically, our world. It's great to read/watch movies/or listen to music, but I don't want anyone to neglect socializing in their lives, because they have to read a book or watch a video essay. We are social creatures. I appreciate the call for creation, but I have to leave this message.. You must choose a "Techne", an art, a skill, a craft. In Plato's philosophy, you absolutely must have good reason for whatever you do, it must be for a purpose greater than ones self..You literally cannot devote yourself to yourself. Knowledge is to be applied to the skill, the skill is to be applied to production. Aristotle likely described the Techne as "a state involving true reason concerned with production", or in short.. A means to an end, not the other way round.

@Daniel-j6lАй бұрын
No. That’s why I watch videos like this, read books, watch film and write. I’ve tried excluding all of these things, living entirely alone with my thoughts but inevitably I turn against myself in a vicious manner. So for now my best bet is to sedate, to attempt to distract myself (it never works). What do you do when nothing, whether external or internal changes your state of mind, your inner-most philosophy, your fundamental value judgments. What is there left to do?
@alca6023Ай бұрын
Make a safe space for yourself inside of your own mind. Then treat yourself as you would a person who you love and respect. Self acceptance is often a behavior that is punished by society. For the simple reason that you are easier to control when you lack self-respect. Thus, self-acceptance and self-respect often need to be learned, relearned, and rewarded internally. Oftentimes, for me, being cruel with myself is a sign that I need better boundaries with others or is a symptom of stress. Keep at it, and you'll find a good way to have a better internal landscape.
@odysseas__Ай бұрын
@@Daniel-j6l Could you tell me more about that inner philosophy? is it that you lack a meaningful purpose? Is it that you fear the worst for the future? I'm not going to pretend to be well-versed in this sort of thing, but I can understand where you might be coming from. Despite all my progress, I'm no happier than I was a year or two ago, and I'm just trying to compare my experience to yours. I feel that the important thing is getting to the core of the problem, and that can only be done by asking a lot of questions unfortunately.

I like it sometimes, but I won't lie and say it's all one should do in life -scrolling and bingeing trash literature or reels or whatever. If that's all someone wants to do, fine -I'm not talking to them in these videos.

@@odysseas__Id say it’s in how you were dismissing “booktok” in a single line, as often people like to group it as a single entity where no books of import or value are talked about. That along side your negative comment about weed use, I worry it puts certain demographics in a box outside yourself. I understand you went into some detail about distinguishing things you consume for fun or pleasure from things to consume to better oneself but I believe the way you talked about some of the slop paints larger strokes than you were intending

@@kattailsbackwardssoaieg9304 Of course, there's always nuance, but fleshing that all out would be both very long and tiresome. Nobody needs me to explain how booktok isn't just one thing -people know that -and nobody should take my comment and interpret it as weed=bad, always and everywhere. The context matters.

@ that’s reasonable, I just commented to highlight that I found it othering, even if it was minor or unintentional It sort of tainted the rest of the video for me personally, but I liked the other points you brought up

Hey ody, I've noticed that youre following Nick Fuentes on Twitter, who is a raging fascist through and through Are you aware, that he is that kind of person?

News to me -must be from a while ago. I've never watched any of his stuff either, I just know he's a right-wing commentator. Also by the way, following someone doesn't mean you agree with them. It's healthy when your feed doesn't parrot your political views.

@@odysseas__ Healthy View on the whole thing. Did not want to push you into any direction, just found it a bit strange!

I remember the original video It was the first video I have ever watched by you. After watching you a few other videos, I decided to subscribe. Personally, I think a simple approach to this could be Exercise - the gym/callisthenics Learning - reading/KZbin Creative - cooking/lego Keep up the amazing work
