What can I say, from the first of your videos that I watched, when you revealed that there was a pro engineer behind the Billy Eillish song that was at that time being touted as a bedroom studio sound, till now, I have found your videos among the very best of the instructional videos that are on youtube. As I have Superior Drummer 3, but haven't yet delved into the mechanics of it, and how to use it for layering, which I didn't actually know it could do, you can only imagine how valuable this video is for me. Thank you.

Great video! Additional ideas about using decay and attack per layer: On snap layers, it can be super helpful to kill the decay of the sound. To avoid the ringing of the different snares from clashing, you can keep the snap layer at a higher volume if you like it that way. Likewise, for body layers sometimes i even fade in the attack of the sample by about 200 ms to keep the attack transient from clashing with the attack of the other layers. Not sure if you can control the envelope of hits in Superior, but if you’re using something like MPC, that stuff is easy to dial in separately per hit.

@@Uzurr69 Yes, He produced the Black album with Randy Staub as his engineer. He worked with Motley Crue and a bunch of other bands and artists. Got his start at Little Mountain Studios here in Vancouver. Studio went under in '93 though. His expansion pack has lots of great drums sounds including a mono kit.

Great trick David. I like layering samples if needed. Is there in Ez Drums a snare with turned off snare vires? I layer one snare without wires (addictive drums). That adds pure body if the recorded one Is to thin.

Awesome man. I usually hate superrior drummer for programs drums. i feel like when working with program drums triggering with superior drummer it just harder to get the sounds right than mixing miced drums and add sample for the shells lol. Am i wrong at something or what. Also Killer guitar tone man. Pls do a video about it.

Addendum - few years ago I only had Easy Drummer 2 and got some very decent snare "stacks" - I found that bringing up and tucking in a very compressed snappy snare track can resolve the missing attack, or snap. The smashed parallel bus of the drum kit (with or without the overheads) usually fills and sends the kit over the top. There have been times where I ended up with 4 or even 5 snare tracks stacked up to get a certain sound.... What is the most you have ended up with so far ? LOVE your snare and drums on all your mixes, David. Awsome.

Can you please explain why you don't like layering kicks in rock/metal music? What about other genres? Thanks for more info and great video.
@mixbustv
@mixbustv Жыл бұрын
Most of the times there's no need (if you know how to mix). A kick is a pretty simple sound, once you pick the right sample, it's all about the mix, saturation, parallel compression, transient designer, more saturation, maybe a subsynth. Adding samples usually creates phase issues, again, no need really, maybe one for click

Do you charge more for this since this sort of leans more into production as opposed to just purely mixing? How do you approach this with hip hop and edm mixes since those producers are usually more particular about the drums they use, and don't always like when engineers change their drums too much?
@mixbustv
@mixbustv Жыл бұрын
I don't, this to me is part of mixing because unless I have a special relationship with the given client (aka, they do expect me to change some things and bleed into production) I don't change the drums, my added samples aren't noticeable, it's gonna be YOUR snare, just better and better fitting the mix. This I think answer the second part as well

@@mixbustv Cool! Maybe this could be a good new video subject some day... ;-)) For me it's like rocket science to blend two or more kicks plus the bass with no phase issues... The scenario get worse and worse building a '90 hip-hop (boom-bap) track filled with sampled drums and 808s, samples basses, etc.. I am trying to slice them out and treat some separately by transient, punch, tale. It's almost like to rediscover the lamp. But, maybe I'm in the right path, just don't know how do it properly yet... Thank you for aswering me, David.

I recommend deleting all the rest of the drum samples off the kit if they are not needed, like, only the snare....saves lots of RAM....Or Cache option....but, leaving only the used samples on SD3 loaded saves....

Nice vid. Another cool trick to get a good snare is to "feather in" a hard hitting one shot sample underneath the natural full dynamics snare. With the right balance you end up with a snare that's still natural sounding and dynamic yet stays pinned in its place in the mix.

DAvid is so right about the 3-layer drum trick. Look at how quickly The Humpty Dance snares (no other original song sounds like it) had been replicated throughout the 90s. Yeap a lot of thieves out there.
