The 3 Loop Serpentine
Serpentines are great exercises to work on suppleness and to get your horse focused, bending, and on the aids! Sometimes, especially when you are first learning how to ride a serpentine, it can be very difficult to visualize what exactly the serpentine should look like! This video includes some INCREDIBLE drone footage that shoulder really help you to visualize the shape of the serpentine.
The 3 loop serpentine shows up in Training Level Test 3 and the judges are very picky about the accuracy of the figure and showing a clear change of bend!
Here are a few tips to help you improve your 3 loop serpentine:
A 3 loop serpentine is 3, half 20 meter circles
Be sure NOT to ride any corners or straight lines in your serpentine
Change your posting diagonal each time crossing the centerline
Show a clear change of bend when you cross the centerline
Serpentines are one of THE BEST warm-up exercises to get your horse focused, supple, and on the aids. Give it a try and let me know in the comments how it is going for you!

Great footage from above. I’m sure you were wicked excited with the way it turned out. I would love to see drone footage from above but closer or more zoomed in where you can show the rider’s aids and body position in different situations and with different exercises even right from the basics of flexion and bend and also moving on up through the lower or more basic lateral exercises/ movements all the way to the more difficult lateral exercises/ movements.

OMG AMELIA!!!!!!!!! I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW HELPFUL THAT DRONE FOOTAGE IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The overhead view of it all is incredible!!!! Seeing the bend as you progress around AND that REALLY cool 'trail' of seeing where the horse WAS compared to where it is going was priceless... Have you done any of these with all the lateral movements....??? What an awesome teaching technique!!! AGAIN - THANK YOU for being so innovative and clear in your teachings....I learn SO much from EVERY video of yours I watch!! (I have been doing a lot of watching this last year, as I stepped off a frozen sawdust pile last winter and ended up with a tibial plateau fracture, which in turn ripped my knee apart. Ive been trying to heal the entire year (no surgery to fix my knee as I'm 'too old'- not able to ride (but I drive too, luckily). But headed for a knee replacement in Dec and looking forward to getting that healed up ND getting back on horseback this coming year...THANK you for all you do in your sharing of knowledge AND motivation. You ride at such a high level, but never forget about those that do not....THANK you so much!!!

Watched it three times, very good demo, especially from the air. I have found out a lot of rider's definatly ride a bend then go straight and to be honest I was told that by a suppose trainer. ( many years ago, and it took a bit of time to get out the habit. Now I know better but as you said the judge needs to see you change your rise in the trot when changing direction. That certainly can cost you marks.

I will say that with new riders I have found that if I don't have them break down the change of direction and bend in strides they end up going across on a diagonal from quarter line to quarter line. I always start my beginners, (in a smaller ring 20 x 40) by having them start to try to straighten the horse after the quarter line then as straight for stride over the centre line then start to change bend before the next quarter line. I have found that starting them this way defines the change of bend and makes a big difference in quality as they progress. I also tell them that the inside is the inside of the ring and the outside is towards the wall because they are not ready to comprehend the true definition. I let them know some of the stuff I tell them will change as they progress in their skill and knowledge I find this helps. I would be interested to hear Amelia's thoughts on this.
