These dogs are definitely no joke when it comes to how much work they are. Very active dogs that need a good amount of exercise and mental stimulation to remain happy and healthy. But gosh, they are really special. Once they mature everything comes together and they are awesome dogs. Loyal, smart and loving. Love my boy.
@johndoe-sh6bi3 жыл бұрын
Love him every day for the rest of his life. It takes a little while until they calm down and understand how they are supposed to behave, but once your Doberman is trained they become the best dog on the planet. If your at that point then just enjoy it every second of everyday. It’s really hard to lose a dog that is so in tune with you. I lost my boy like 6 months ago and it is so hard trying to pick a new pup and move on from the previous dog when they seemed almost perfect. Best of luck to you and your dog

@@johndoe-sh6bi Thank you! It is gut wrenching to loose a dog. They really make the best company. Very sorry to hear about your loss. I hope you find a time that is right and start a new chapter with another pup. Honestly I almost didn’t get another dog after I lost one a few years ago. Its too traumatic. Our boy ate 2 sectionals during his terrible teens. it was quite the trying time. he matured into the most loyal, loving and intelligent dog i have ever had in my family. he would take a bullet for my wife and kids and makes us laugh every day with his crazy shenanigans. over the years his fur has slowly started to fall out (he's a blue) and he has slowed down quite a bit. the realization hits me hard how short a time we get with these wonderful dogs and i'm not sure how we will take it when he's gone. thank you for providing education on the breed. stick with it folks, they are worth it.

I got my Dobe girl when she was only 9 days old. She was the runt of 9 pups. She wasn't getting much of mom's milk and was getting very weak. Mom started trying to put her down. My friend stopped by one day with her to see if I would keep her for a couple hours while he went to his shop. He told me what was going on and I half jokingly said "You won't get her back." He replied with "If you can save her you can keep her". So, I've had her since she was 9 days old. She slept on my chest for the first 2-3 weeks. I woke up every few hours to feed her goats milk with a syringe until she was able to use a bottle. She's now a very muscular 68 pounds and FULL of energy, and will be 3 years old in in 7 days. She is very much bonded to me and very protective of me, however she can sense if I am ok with new people and takes her que from that.

Schedule, schedule, schedule & patience & exercise & activity makes for a happy Doberman. And, eventually your dog will grow up & it becomes very easy for all. The routine becomes less busy but still a schedule. John, you are a godsend - providing these tips to Doberman owners. I had 3 ( in a row ) and figured this all out on my own in time. John you truly are an asset to the Doberman Pinscher & their owners. Many thanks to you.. I love the breed and am very happy that you provide accurate information, rather than urban legend.

I laughed out loud because I could relate (especially the whining). You MUST push through the difficult times and stay on point just like John says. Know that in the end you will have the most awesome dog ever!!! My Moses is now just over two and he is so obedient and loving. People obsess over my Dobe cause he is such a loving gentleman. It took at lot of consistent work, especially the first year. All great advise on these videos.
@DobermanPlanet4 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Suzanne! Really appreciate the insight! That's so cool about Moses, I'm sure he is awesome now. Yeah that first year though.. so rough. I just want people to be aware going into it and let them know it's normal and temporary. I hate the thought of someone giving up a Doberman pup because they're "too much to handle" while they're going through just a temporary phase because they feel like it'll never end.

I love your videos; keep them coming. Almost everything you share is accurate. The only downside I came across your videos after trial and error with my Dobermans. But now watch your videos to learn and understand my mistakes.... I have 2 Dobermans; Diesel AND Max (not related) - adopted them in the first 4m. Both were mistreated during the first few months so there was a lot of separation anxiety built in them. Treadmill helped a lot cos by the time of training time they had spent their high energy. They both are stubborn in their own way but f*cking intelligent and are velcro dogs (which I don't complain especially with COVID, they are enjoying it even more). Dobermans unnecessarily have a bad rep - it is in most cases bad dog ownership than the dog itself. During their stubborn phase, they do test your patience, which goes well into the 6-8m stage after that, at least it continued until then with my dogs, they both settled and recognized me as the pack leader. They love humans and kids and are fine with cats, not sure why people say they aren't the best first dogs.

Put in the time to train them- a tired dog = good dog they require physical AND mental stimulation to be happy. Thanks for this video! I noticed how Arlo is content to just relax on your lap without chewing you or needing a chew toy. My doberman pup is 14 weeks old right now, and while he likes to be in my lap, he NEEDS a toy, or else he will bite me or will become a bit restless. Was Arlo ever like this and did he just calm down as he got older and teething slowed down? Once again, great content!! Your channel has helped me so much.
@DobermanPlanet4 жыл бұрын
Yes, Arlo was definitely like that at that age but it has gotten better. I think it's a few things... getting through the teething stage, maturing a bit, and upping his exercise a bit. Once I found the right amount of exercise Arlo needed during the day, it improved. But chewing a toy in your lap is a bonding thing for Dobermans too so don't be too eager to stop it entirely :-)

We brought our puppy home at 3 months. He is almost 6 now but let me tell you... from age 3 months to 1 year hr was a whirlwind of issues. The worst struggles I ever had with a puppy. The crying, the energy, constantly running constantly going for stuff he shouldn’t. At 5 months he could reach anything on the high counters, and he would LEARN to do it a different way each time he got caught and fine-tune his stealing skills. The biting was awful too. It was all play but it hurt and was constant. I asked a trainer when he would start acting more behaved, they (another avid dobie owner) said at about 4 to 5 years. And they were right, at 4 years he finally calmed down and started listening more. So if you want a Doberman puppy... be very prepared. This is not like most puppies, and certainly blind-sighted me even though I’ve had multiple puppies in my life.

Do you have a video or could we see one in the near future about bringing and raising a Dobie pup with small children? I so want to get a pup soon, but am a little unsure with my twin 3 year olds.

Another great video, loved it! Would be interested in your thoughts of another "testing your boundaries stage" at 12-18mths old as this is where I've acquired some of mine ( being rescued or rehomed). Totally agree on Tired( well excersised ) dog is a happy dog Strong in their routines Consistency. Keep the vids coming, Greetings fae Scotland 🏴

This is the 1st video of yours I've seen...great to hear from a "regular" guy in addition to the professional trainers...e/one has some good input . Now...I'll search your channel for what I'm about to ask, but did you use or refer to any specific method of training or have any "go to" source/KZbinr for tips and "How-To" info? Thx much...thoroughly enjoyed the video. I am considederin getting one next year once I retire, as my schedule currently won't afford me the time needed for one now. And I don't mean to load up a comment with questions that maybe are addressed in other videos of yours, but your dog seems well fit for the family...in the house...very loving...not too high strung, etc, so have you provided the breeder's information if indeed you obtained yours through one? Thanks again.

Just got a 7mo Dobie who is absolutely awesome but does do the mouthing a bit. Great video!
@DobermanPlanet4 жыл бұрын
Congrats! Just stay on top of it. At that age it's critical to not allow mouthing or it could become an adult habit! That's so awesome though, I'm really happy for you and your new Dobie!

The people that don't like this video are probably those people who tie their dogs to a tree hoping they train themselves.

Andrea yes I have been! I’ve been preparing my house for it the best I can!
@michaelbaijens48214 жыл бұрын
Andrea the dislike could also be because of the cut of tail. Youre not telling me you love dogs but have a dog with a cut tail and ears. Then you just have them becuase you like how they look.
@raidernation19154 жыл бұрын
Michael Baijens you know cutting the tail Is good for them right? It prevents it from shattering and also there spine getting messed up

Wanted to ask you a question. Would you agree with someone getting a Doberman if they work from home at least 8.5hrs a day but would have the time and commitment outside of that to walk it at least 1hr a day plus consistent daily training for about 30 mins a day
@Gamerboy-nh5tg4 жыл бұрын
Must you backyard be big and must your dog sleep inside the house or outside
@DrHamma14 жыл бұрын
They need daily exercise and they should sleep inside. They are lean and don't have a thick coat so they don't do well in extreme temps
@lizbelli82874 жыл бұрын
Absolutely an indoor dog. They do best when they are with their family. A big yard is helpful, but they need one on one exercise and training time with their owner. Its a lot of work keeping this breed.
@kevincody83912 жыл бұрын
Exercise is the key, and plenty of. They are a lot calmer when they burn off energy. In an urban area jogging w, or bicycling, skateboarding. Tossing a tennis ball in a back alley, they're not natural retrievers so takes a bit of training. In a suburban area find a big park or a dog park. When they're well trained enough you can let off leash. And add a frisbee to tennis ball. I also found puppy training w 20 or so other puppies of different breeds very helpful. Helps get them used to being around other dogs, less excited when they do meet. Many have described as hard work, I found enjoyable, very rewarding. there's a few days that feel like one step forward and two steps back. The vast majority of time was confident of making progress. Dobies are so eager to please . . . they're sensitive. Be careful to not over correct, harshly. 80%+ of their training needs to be positive reinforcement, praise when they are doing well. At any age / stage exercise is key, burn off their energy. And keep them mentally engaged, stimulated. That they're part of the family & home, contributing, have a role along w a routine. Kids help, and they're good w kids.

One misconduct I was not able to correct my late Doberman was his bad habit of collecting, accumulating and chewing pebbles and different size rocks. At his late years this become kind of obsessive behavior very dificult to change since we have a huge back yard. When taking long walking hikes together to the nearby surrounding hills, he would come back carrying huge pebbles. We lived with two other dogs and he was clearly the alpha of the pack. He passed away at age 12. Have heard of this behavior before??

I got two Doberman puppies who’re now 13 and 17 weeks- male and female - and the female bites a LOT. Plus, she doesn’t stop barking in her crate. The male however is more calm and quiet.

Hi @DobermanPlanet thanks so much for your videos they really help. I have a question my family and I want a Doberman, we have a big garden and good fencing, but we want to build an outdoor insulated kennel/house for him as he’ll only be allowed in the downstairs part of our house. Would they be ok with a kennel like that?

@DobermanPlanet I am getting a Doberman on Halloween per the breeder. My question is, what size crate is that that you had in your bedroom? Please advise.
@DobermanPlanet4 жыл бұрын
It's the 48" Amazon Basics crate (here's the link: amzn.to/2DwSObY). I got the big one so it could grow with him (it comes with an adjustable partition which is really nice). It's a good one for the price for sure, but the only downsides are it's a wire crate so you definitely should cover 3 of the sides with something to make it feel more like a den and it's so big it's a bit hard to transport if you need to. But other than that I really like it. The extra room is nice for Arlo now that he's bigger.
@spiderpimp334 жыл бұрын
Doberman Planet That is awesome! Thank you sooo much for responding! Last question, is a 48” tall pen good enough for when he becomes an adult? I am going to build a 12x16 floating deck for him and bolt down a steel wire roll fence or one of those 8 - 16 panel fences to it.
@DobermanPlanet4 жыл бұрын
Not a problem! Thanks for checking out my video! :-) I'd say it would be fine for most adult Dobies, yeah. That's why I went so big also is I wanted the option for Arlo to be able to use it as an adult too if need be.
