I'm so glad I found your channel awhile ago. I have a Doberman that was apparently abandoned who just showed up at my house in the country starving. He was so wild and crazy I thought I was going to have to get rid of him. I'm a senior citizen and have some balance issues. Thanks to your channel I've been able to train most of that wildness and undisciplined behavior out of him. He's now much calmer and more well-behaved, and he's become a good friend. Thanks so much for your videos.

I have to say my Dobermans are actually couch potatoes and they're not fat. When they go outside they run, but inside, they're chill. I guess it's because I insist on it. She's 7 weeks old and starting all the training you have recommended for her age and she's doing well so far, very smart! We are having to reward her with her own kibble and "good girl"s though. Rewarding with treats was terrible for her little puppy tummy and gave her serious diarrhea. Thanks for continuing your channel, looking forward to the next video!

My dobe pup had an issue with jumping up in her early months. I learned a technique that went something like this. With a dedicated training session and treats on hand. Encourage the dog to jump up on you. As soon as the dog tries, back up a step and say something like "hey". The dog will stop jump, mark and reward. Start reducing the reward quickly once the dog has learned to stop jumping on your mark. Make the reward more random for some future training sessions. She learned this very quickly and I was amazed how quick it worked. Her jumping was a real problem. There are some videos on this technique on youtube. Arlo continues to look fantastic. I love the euro!
@michaeltomlinson72454 жыл бұрын
Superb again John ! Praise and reward, consistency and best of all, make things YOUR habit. Terrific advice, have shared this with friends who have dogs - sadly, none have Dobermans - because I think your advice would work with most breeds. Maybe not so well with some as they are not as intelligent as Dobermans, but at least the owners will have a better idea on how they should be behaving with their dog. As always, keep up the excellent work and Arlo is such a dude !

Did you work with Arlo on his "indoor" voice? Spot on with manners: greeting, doors and stairs. I've been lucky with counter surfing. I put a lot of energy into aveting issues at feeding time. (jumping, pushing and of course any aggression). I think the feeding manners carried over to the other potential food stuffs. (Garbage, food on counters, toddlers with animal cookies...) The Doberman dialogue over tea was funny.

I agree dont feed them anywhere other than their bowl, we trained our last girl she had to wait until after we ate our evening meal. We did feed her scraps and she was 100% trustworthy with food left out. She was fed twice a day once in the morning after her walk and after we had dinner at night. I prefer not to train using treats. Some dogs are simply driven by food more than others.

I do a door exercise. All my dogs, 2 of which are Red Dobermans, sit at any door because they know that's how it gets opened. At first I would say Sit/wait, then the release word (Free). The reward is going in/out of the door. Start at an inside door to practice. The first time you say Sit/wait, you won't even be able to touch the doorknob before the butt gets up. Hands down at side, standing straight up, Sit/wait, hand on knob, may be able to turn the knob before the butt gets up, turn knob back, hands at your side, Sit/ wait, now maybe open the door a crack before the butt gets up, close the door, hands off the knob, hands at your side. Sit/wait, until you are able to have the dog remain in the same position while you walk through the door (I step away from the dog on the foot furthest from the dog as an extra clue they are to wait there rather than follow you) then turn back to the dog after you are on the other side of the open door. Free - the dog can then come through the door. I use wait because they are going to be able to move in a few. When I use Stay, the dog is safe and nothing bad is going to happen to them. I will come back to the dog to release them. They don't move until I come back to them before giving the release word. For the door exercise though it's wait and every single door, same exercise. Eventually you get to a door, your dog just automatically sits, without you having to say a word. They wait till you give them the release word.

Hi John, first of all I really love your channel and hope youll keep the good work with it. Second - sorry for my english. I would like to ask you: my wife and I decided to buy a house and start a family. We love dogs. I rised and trained hungarian viszla, took care of golden retriever, help to rised two bassets and we will finally have space to have a dog by ourselfs. I would love to have guardian dog so my family feels safe when im out of town and alert potential visitors/intruders to pick some other house or use the doorbell at the gate before entering my property. Problem is my wife get easily scared (got scared by basset "evil", as she mention, barking) and looking at doberman gives her chills and terrifies her. She tries to get more information, she understands they are good quality dogs but she thinks she will be affraid of the dog. I tried to find some videos of dobbies having fun but there were usually large ones not behaving or not responding to the command of their master. Could you recommend what to tell/show her to change her mind or put her mind on ease? I saw the video where you told about dobermans attacks and how there are only 6 cases and it could be intruder not the owner but maybe i need something more owner perpective like. Thank you and thanks for all the videos. Michael

Hi john !! I absolutely love your videos theyre always so helpful! I do have some questions for you though. I wasn't able to find an email for you to respond to, so I'm hoping you see this comment! ( sorry its so long ) I notice that you always say that being consistent is key! But my question is, does it have to be the same person every time correcting and teaching commands or would my partner be able to teach commands as well when im the main owner. Also, what are some good scoulding tips? My next question is, Im a total of 80 pounds. What if when I go to level 3 of correcting my dog on biting, she over powers me and makes me struggle to have a grip but im still persistent in at least trying to hold her down? Would she take that as her being alfa? Or would she recognize after a time period that im correcting her? And lastly, should i be concerned about maybe some negative results from the DNA testing? Should I test her when she's a pup before I buy her from the breeder and look elsewhere if unhealthy?

Mr Walter. Have new girl and would love a way to organize your amazing videos? You are truly the best authority on Doberman training. I want to use your methods kinda with a structure. Absolutely don’t want to miss any. I would gladly pay for a list or something. Is that possible?

Great vid John. My Dober is 5 months as well. I was wondering if you are done posting his ears? They are looking great as well. I know there are many options and opinions when it come to posting so I was wondering what your thoughts were

I'm not done with Arlo, but I'm close. Another few weeks or so probably. His ears stood very quickly. Usually by 5 or 6 months you can start leaving out the posts for longer periods and see how long before the ears start to flop. If you can go a few days with no flopping then your dog is probably done. Some dogs won't get there until 8 to 12 months depending on the individual dog and the length of the crop.

First, I love your channel! You pack a lot of great information into compacted videos where those with shorter attention spans, (like my hubby), are happy to watch them; -and like a dog, it's all about keeping them happy, right? My question though, is which crop style did you use on Arlo's ears? He's gorgeous! We're picking up our baby girl, (European), in a couple of weeks and I'd like her to have the same crop.
