By the way, those silver tow bar bracket connectors that come out of the grill on TaterTot can be easily stolen. They simply unclip with a pull of a ring, then twist and remove. I wanted you to realize they aren't secure when you're parking TaterTot in a parking lot somewhere. What happens when someone takes one, or both of them? You then have to get a new set of tow bar brackets, which could take days.

That is the same two system I use to tow my Ford Focus. Works great. I have been towing for 3 years now. The only real issue I have found is that the Blue Ox tow bar has some rust, as does the base plate. Next spring I am going to paint over the rust to extend the life of it. It works great, but 3 years is too soon to start rusting. IMHO.

You do need to check your electrical hookup each time. The plugs can sometimes get corroded or get loose with use. It is a part of our standard checklist for 15 years and I am thankful that it has been. It may not be as critical for you with a light and small vehicle that does not need much braking assist however brake lights and blinkers are certainly a safety factor.
@WILDEBILL3083 жыл бұрын
Good video on hooking up your new tatertot. Here's a tip for when you unhook. When you are ready to unhook start the car and put it in drive so you put just a slight preshure on the towbar. Now put the car in park. Now when you hit the leavers to release preshure on the towbar it will be in a "neutral" condition and it will be easy to take the pins out. Also if you are on a grade the car won't roll on you. Something else you might do is if you are disconnected I always remove the adapters you connect to from the baseplate. The reason is you can't lock them and someone could take them and then you arn't going anywhere till you get new ones. I have heard there are that nasty out there so better safe than sorry.

Dont black up with your toad vehicle connected to the RV. To do so can messs up your front end alignment - most likely the caster settings on the front end of your towed vehicle.

Us born and raised Floridians can't stand the cold. I was only outside for 20 minutes at 41 degrees in my backyard at night and my hands and fingers was so painfully cold turning pink and red. I was worried I was gonna lose my fingers to frostbite so I went back in the warm house to thaw and warm up my hands and fingers. I don't know how the people up north in even much colder weather can handle it. I have warm gloves but sometimes you need to do stuff with your bare hands and the gloves get in the way which slows you down.

Only one observation Eric; here in the UK when you are towing, the object (in your case Tater Tot) being towed has to display the registration of the towing vehicle, which is achieved by adding usually a magnetic or tied on extra number plate, removed when not towed.
@mikelebonner9703 жыл бұрын
Love JaxMan!♥️ Thanks for showing us how you tow Tatertot. Very informative. Safe travels to you both.
@stevegunyon28873 жыл бұрын
Eric...looking good. One more thing...you said something about the leveling jacks making the towbar set high. Whatever the case... you want that towbar as level or perpendicular to the ground as possible. The result of not doing this is hard on the front tires and will result in “cupping” them as they bounce up and down at speed by not maintaining constant contact with the pavement. I speak from experience!!
@nomadicfanatic3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that may be true to an extend, but I've heard MUCH more issues of bottoming out there at the tow bar point and causing damage to the wires, cables and shearing off metal of the tow bar from excessive dragging. I guess you pick your demons. Which one can you live with. Which one cost less to repair.
@judhardcastle79313 жыл бұрын
Agree with comment about brake system power. It needs to be connected to the car battery otherwise when it breaks away there won't be power to apply the brakes! Also on ours there is a test button you're supposed to press before driving to seat everything and make sure drivers seat is in correct position--don't want to have to go start the RV before you can do that.
@waytoson3 жыл бұрын
HIGHLY love this video... Also.. HIGHLY recommend that if you are going to be placing your pull pins on the ground to spray paint them bright orange or yellow so you can find them in grassy conditions or wherever you place them. Don't want to lose them ...that would SUCK... TFS..HAPPY🎆 NEW 🎆YEAR🎆

Nice setup with Tater tot! Suggestion... Add either keyed or combination locks to the pins that connect the car to the towbar. SOMETIMES, stupid people like to pull the pins out when you stop to go in a store. Or, just be sure to check them everytime you walk away from your RV.
@rolloverriderpgr3 жыл бұрын
You need safety wires on the pins incase one falls off its dangling there waiting to be put back in OR buy and extra one for JIC! A story; About 15 years ago I get a call on the CB radio that an RV towing a car forgot to release the brakes. I look in the mirror and see him so I pull into the left lane so he can get up next to me. He catches up and I blow my horn to get his attention but when I'm pointing back at the car he just nodes and smiles and waves! Ok the guy behind me get behind me and were going to do a blockade stop which he wasn't to happy about until he smelled his burning brakes which I told him he better get his fire extinguisher as one of his tires was actually on fire! After it was out he got a truckers advice that if a trucker takes the time to get your attention and point at something you should really stop and check your toad or your vehicle out! And yes there have been the few bottomfeeders that did harm to people but most of us are good guys keeping you safe! Blue Skies and Safe Journeys!
@edwinsantini10423 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric, I had the exact same system (my toad was a Jeep Wrangler unlimited), and I found that using a drop hitch to lower the blue OX tow bar where it is more level with the car towed much better.
@jeffknutter3 жыл бұрын
Little security tip. If Tater tot has a key with a chip have a plain steel one cut (no chip) to use while you tow. That way if someone breaks into it and figures out the battery cutoff they will still not be able to start the engine and drive away. Although she’s so little it wouldn’t stop someone from carrying it away, LOL. I’m from WI and the law here is any towed vehicle weighing 3000lbs or more must have a breaking system with a break away. But Like you, I always use my break because it’s cheap insurance. Accidents happen and a runaway could kill someone. Good for you Eric and screw the haters!
@pda4you3 жыл бұрын
You said not needed for cars under 3k but it depends on the state you are towing in. There are either one or two states that require brakes on trailers (including cars) weighing as little as 1k pounds. At any rate trailer brakes are always a good idea, and I would not tow any car without them. Your smart to have them. Now your legal in all states.

Just make sure when you pull forward to lock the tow bar in place make sure it does. I saw one rig being towed that one side didn’t lock into place. So every time they hit the brakes the one side would push forward making it a scary situation.

If your break controls is powered by the RV. If it breaks away how is it going to power the break controller. I’m by no means an expert, but something about that doesn’t sound right. When a travel trailer breaks away the house battery on the trailer powers the break. You may want to power your break controller with tots batteries. Or maybe double check with blue ox about what they suggest.
