Why was the whole game spoiled in the first 15 seconds!
@catanace1741 Жыл бұрын
I think that the way this game was developing the moment you play the mono you instantly become the target, and have a very hard time winning. In such scenarios I prefer to try and keep the mono until I can use it to instantly win. Now, I'll admit that sometimes this results with me losing with the mono still in hand, but often it allows me to win without ever being the target.
@Funglutton Жыл бұрын
I think the added factor to weave into that decision is if you can deny another player a key play. E.g. if you're tracking and can see that this will net you a city AND deny them 2x dev cards, then it's usually better to play now than sit on it for fear of becoming the rob target.

You need to remember that you're also sabotaging up to 3 opponents. Losing 4 cards and a settlement/city to a 7 roll is often devastating and a mono has a similar effect on all 3 players. An early mono that steals less cards is often just as impactful as a bigger mono later because of the value of disrupting development. Think of it this way: If you play your mono on lets say turn 20 and instantly win the game, you could say "that was a great mono". But your opponents didn't "lose" anything from your mono. You only gained. But what if you played your mono on turn 15 and won the game 5 turns later (turn 20) because of its impact. If you did that, your opponents were slowed down significantly for a turn on top of the mono providing you with development. I think the only exception is when one of your opponents is clearly stronger than the other 2 and your mono won't affect him at all.

@@au_bury I'm not sure you understood what I was saying. I didn't argue that you should ALWAYS play a mono only if it gives you the instant win. Mono is probably the most high-skill dev card in the game, so the correct time to play in varies a lot based on the specific way each game develops. In some cases you would play it when it gives you maximum value; in other cases you would try to hurt a strong opponent or a few of them; in yet other cases you would use it to instantly win a race to an important contested spot, etc. In this particular case the timing of the mono had a huge impact on pacing. Dylan knew that getting the 9th and 10th point (assuming he takes road for 8) would be a challenge for him. That challenge becomes much harder if he needs to do so while he's the target. What I think he should have done is hold on to the mono and not take road until he gets to 8 with 2 more settles or a settle-city, and then pull off a huge brick mono to take road. Using the mono when he did just to pop 1 dev (when obviously he's not getting army) and city the 5 wood spot (Which is just a point, as the city there does very little), if just wrong, imo.

@@catanace1741 I'm saying you should pretty much always play your mono ASAP even if it makes you the target and doesn't instantly win you the game.
@catanace1741 Жыл бұрын
@@au_bury Well, then you are absolutely wrong, and most top Catan players would agree. In fact, while there are exceptions, it is generally believed that mono becomes more powerful in later stages of the game.This is due to the fact that as the game progresses, players produce more resources, resulting in higher volume monos.

you're so good at setting the frame and talking yourself down! From the get go blue was the "best setup" you were "left with 2-5-10 guy" and the others were possible winners. Great Job!

I'm a bit surprised you didn't wait for a brick mono to take road later on. You try to get the cities by trading and stay off the radar. And then you try to set up a 3-point brick mono with taking road and settling. What do you think?
@Siggerou1993 Жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same, with a good brick mono he could easily get 5-8 bricks. With all that wood production, it would help him get road and the extra settlement he needed.

Nah, i think taking wheat was the correct play. It allowed for all the faster development later
@poro3246 Жыл бұрын
@@kzalesak4 Not only does it put himself ahead, it slows down the rest. Someone else would probably get 10 before he'd get 7.

Love the vids! But please don’t spoil the placements/settles/score in the intro because part of the fun of watching is guessing the outcome.

I think if you really want to improve your win rate you have to stop "pulling a VP" for the win

Agreed, those resources should have been held for a city and that would've been the win

Might be in the minority on this one, but I think the editing is a bit much with this video. I've really appreciated the settlements and white highlights - it helps you keep track of what you're thinking about - but there seems to be quite a bit going on at once at times.

I think Dylighted trade too much , especially with those trade exchanges, and waits for action when he had the cards to do it himself, that road was easy to hold, and instead of roading inside where he controls it , should go for 8 brick/3port and keep on building roads
