What Liz calls the “shortened diphthong” is the standard “long o” of “General American” English, at least in stressed syllables, if not always on the ends of words like “tomato” and “potato.” (And by the way, “tomato” rhymes with “potato”!)

Hi, can you do a video to cover "hard attack" please? It's to do with using a glottal stop to say the vowel for words that start with a vowel such as "accent", "attack", "example". It's a very short hard vowel I'm using and not elongated. . I'm trying to learn modern rp and Welsh is my first language. I didn't understand why I was pronouncing such words so differently and now I believe it's due to hard attack. It's almost German in nature and doesnt sound smooth. I do this for every word that starts with a vowel I think. Realising this has been a revelation to me. I'd love your opinion on this and how I can stop this hard attack when trying modern rp, thanks

Hi. Thank you for your comment. To help you eliminate "hard attack" I would advise you to look at linking in fast speech which will help you smooth out your sounds if you concentrate on the linking sound rather than the first vowel sound of a word. For softening of vowels at the beginning of sentences, use the schwa sound instead of the vowel sound. This will help train your mind. There are plenty of connected speech videos on my channel Connected Speech: kzbin.info/aero/PLe6nq1U9Qfaz_gCpPfylsc3V9jyGBKimf
