The 30 Characters Who Are Already Cast For the DCU

It’s been nearly a year since James Gunn’s announcement video regarding Gods and Monsters, the first chapter of the new DCU and in that time a surprisingly large amount of characters have already been cast even if the majority of those castings come from either Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy, some of the chapters earliest projects. In this video I’ll be going over the 30+ characters and the 23 actors who are playing them who have been cast in the DCU.

I think we really should appreciate how well James Gunn is handling things. Before him, we would hear all the time about DC projects being announced, then cancelled soon afterwards. Now that he is in charge, we already have a Creature Commandos show that is almost finished, a Superman movie that is due to start shooting very soon, a Swamp Thing movie that has already found its director, and, Gunn has announced recently that most of the DCU shows already have showrunners and writers. That much preparedness was pretty much unheard of before in the DC movies.

If he can keep John Cena, he could've kept Henry Cavill. Especially when Henry really wanted to portray a more positive version of the character but was stuck with edgy Superman instead.

Considering James on multiple occasions has referred to Michael Rosenbaum as the best lex luthor, the movie is in good hands. Aaron Ashmore was fantastic as Jimmy too

Other than the Sean Gunn casting as Maxwell Lord I really like to love the castings. I do agree with your sentiment of the version they’re going for of Lord could help it. Really looking forward to Creature Commandos, Superman Legacy and Peacemaker S2 since it sounds like in Peacemaker they’ll establish what is carried over to the new DC Universe. DCs got so many great characters and stories to be adapted so I really hope this works.

I see Nicholas Hoult as a great Lex Luthor as a new version of Michael Rosenbaum's Lex from Smallville. Can't wait until Jason Mamoa's Lobo gets announced (c'mon, you all know it's coming). I am not surprised about Nathan Fillion as a green lantern, being that he's done it several times in animated movies. Years ago, he would have been the best Hal Jordan.

I don’t know why Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner is such a stretch. His personality fits that role perfectly, and he’s kinda the de-facto voice actor for Hal Jordan in so many animated adaptations, so it’s a great way to let him play Green Lantern in live action without having an older Hal Jordan. Great video though, I love hearing your comprehensive input.

More DCEU actors (and Ben’s brother, whom I had to let know Ben is my favorite Batman, showed him my Batfleck action figures and posters in my room) were there as well. He was super appreciative of the love. He asked me if I wanted to take a picture, which was great because I wasn’t allowed to ask. Showed him the Superman painting I had commissioned for Christmas too. All in all it was a night to remember. Everyone there was super sweet.

My favorites are David as Superman and Isabela as Hawkgirl. David because he was the only one up for the role I could actually see as Superman and Isabela because it was an absolute surprise but also absolutely perfect, been a huge fan of hers ever since Instant Family, an underrated actress playing an underrated hero. My least favorite however is Brosnahan as Lois, I will forever stand by the fact that Emma Mackey should've been cast in the role

Im curious to know how she handles the physical part of the character as shes very tiny. Though im curious to know why rachel isnt your favorite pick for lois. Even i was rooting for emma since im a big fan of her work in sex education.

@@prathapkutty7407 Isabela proved that she's very good at stunt work in Sweet Girl and can convincingly handle herself in a fight despite her size and she loves action movies and is very enthusiastic about doing as much of her own stunts as possible, couple that with the fact that Hawkgirl has super strength, you don't have to worry about Isabela's size. As for why I don't like Rachel for Lois, it's the only casting for this movie where I look at it and simply just can't see it whereas with everyone else who has been cast, most especially David, I look at their casting and think it's picture perfect. And when I look at Emma Mackey, especially with the shorter hair she had in Death on the Nile coupled with her fantastic acting abilities, I see a perfect Lois so I was very disappointed she wasn't cast That being said I didn't see it with Elizabeth Tulloch either and she's my favorite live action Lois now but on the other hand I didn't see it with Amy Adams as Lois and she proved me right. So only time will tell with Rachel

I’m optimistic about this universe but I’m just so confused on what’s canon in this DCU. So Peacemaker season 1 isn’t canon but season 2 is? So when going through a binge watch of everything DCU, would you watch Peacemaker season 1 or skip straight to season 2? Then is The Suicide Squad canon too? So Blue Beetle was supposed to be canon but because it performed poorly it’s not now? If someone could clear this up for me, that would be great. I’m just struggling to follow what’s canon and what’s not.

Peacemaker is sort of just loose canon so the events of season 1 roughly happened. Peacemaker season 2 will be fully canon and set in the DCU. The blue beetle character is canon but the movie is not.

Before the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern, a whole lot of us Green Lantern fans wanted Nathan Fillion to play Hal Jordan. But now we hear he's gonna play Guy Gardner? Hell yeah. This is even better than him playing Hal. Wow! The casting my boy Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr? Excellent! I hope he gets a live action role because Frank Grillo is an outstanding action star. He's got the looks, charisma, and physicality. One guy I think could have played an excellent Lex Luthor back in the day? Alfred Molina. He did so on Robot Chicken and I actually thought he was perfect.

Thank god. Prior to all this, we had a Jimmy Olsen who was killed in the opening scene of BVS, a DIck Grayson killed offscreen, and Snyder even went so far as to cast Jena Malone as Carrie Kelly. Initially Jesse Eisenberg was cast as Jimmy Olsen, but we got the worst Luthor and a dead Jimmy. Everything after Man of Steel was absolute trash. The man should be banned from adapting comic book properties. Long Live James Gunn's DCU!

I'm glad they are hiring a lot of lesser known actors. I feel that the MCU is a bit of a victim of its popularity by casting so many a list actors and wanting them to stay in these roles for such a long time. It's going to be a lot harder to keep this universe functioning if the actors aren't willing to commit to long term roles.

I disagree with your statement about not having seen a "Good" Lex Luthor. True this is opinion and subjective, but from everything I've seen and heard, Michael Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor in Smallville is still well regarded as one of the best portrayals of the character if not THE best portrayal in live action. Again, subjective opinion and all that, but I feel like saying we've never seen a "good" Lex is a bit of a stretch.

I really hope I'm wrong in my adamant apposition to Sean Gunn playing Max Lord. I don't believe he's got what it takes to make Maxwell a mildly interesting, double-dealing, character. He´s goofy at his best, Guy Gardner would be a better call. I have to say Skylar Gisondo - as Jimmy Olsen, is my favorite cast choice. Unfortunately I don't share the overall optimism regarding the cast . Too many Idiotic characters! That would work in a Suicide Squad, International JL, maybe a Booster Gold movie. A movie called "Superman Legacy", which is meant to start a whole new Universe Franchise deserves better. Making Superman look good in comparison to a bunch of moronic third level heroes does not bode well...

Hopefully they will try to find ginger actors and actress to play these characters they keep replacing them with black actors and actress for some reason. Even in animation they replace gingers that proves that they hate gingers. I feel bad for gingers who are trying to make it in Hollywood these are the characters they could have played on the big screen and small screen. With Skyler Gisondo playing Jimmy Olsen is in the right direction given gingers a chance to play these characters. Nothing against the actors and actress who are supposed to gingers that play them. They were meant for ginger actors and actress the creators made them gingers.

DC keeps on making the same mistake… announcing all these character, all these actors and all these potential stories. And if 1 or 2 fail somebody steps in and changes everything again. Cancelling things we are looking forward to. I’m afraid of a repeat of last time. Even under new leadership.

After seeing Black Adam, Shazam: Fury Of The God's, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman & The Lost Kingdom...I can see why James Gunn announced his plans to reset the DCEU. He knew that these upcoming dceu films were super mid and weren't going to be received well critically and commercially. No big tie ins, no future plans. Now we can get a proper DCU like we should of had years ago. James Gunn doesn't miss when it comes to filmmaking. Guardians 1-3, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker...looking forward to Superman Legacy and The Brave and the Bold.
