I'm a Filipino and I currently live in the Philippines, my Uncle's friend actually worked in Pepsi Distribution during this incident years ago and they said that this was pretty much how it went. People here are desperate for Money, even up to the modern days, as poverty is ripe here, and people get into fights over the pettiest of things. Just last week or so as of posting, someone killed another over not being invited to a Birthday Party. But for a more Grand Scale, the Philippine Government Banned some celebrities for "Badmouthing" the country, such as Claire Danes and even The Beatles back in the day as they gave some opinions of the country that were negative, like it needed better public sanitation protocols.

To be fair, all of these contests have fine print saying basically they are not responsible for mistakes and can change anything at any time. They avoid legal issues by allowing you to get a play for free somehow (mail in thing usually), so payment is not required. And if you are not paying for a service, then you have no legal recourse if you don't get what you think you should have gotten.
@GrumpyIan3 жыл бұрын
If they require you to pay (arguably buying a bottle of soda to get the number) it's considered gambling. That's why they say "no purchase necessary" at the end of any promo.
@worldcomicsreview3543 жыл бұрын
@@GrumpyIan When I was a kid, competitions like that would usually be accompanied by some ridiculously easy question. I think because adding it a question made it a "game of skill" and not a "game of chance", thus not gambling.

@@worldcomicsreview354 This still happens (last time I checked) on British Independent TV channels, they promote a phone competition supposedly to win huge sums by answering 1 question, which is, as mentioned, usually extremely easy. As a person living in the Philippines, this is seriously funny and relatable. -This happened 2 weeks or more after the elections of Cory Aquino so Pepsi really wanted a grasp on the situation with the celebrations. -This is literally Fallout shelter, when he saw me playing the game as I quote myself "We get caps from getting quests or killing people!" then one of my **fathers told me about this incident -In fact the media even considered this a funny meme to not buy Pepsi products, however this did boast Pepsi's power here in the Php after our generation started loving it and forgetting 349 -People would literally turn into a Mafia on Pepsi and allow it(Which side note: Happens a *lot* back then) -And in old Filipino fashion, still were ol' gamer tryhards of the SEAsia, since many don't actually drink Pepsi, they wanted the caps and threw away the coke! They weren't there for the drink but for the cap Much like us now, not for the experience, but for the competition.(Trust me it's still with us) -Then the fact that we weren't thought about this in school but from our elders and taxi drivers -Oh yeah right, Murder and Kidnap was like everyday/week during that Mafia time in any place. So literally 2 guys dying from a bottle cap guy was like in my mind "huh, just a normal day in old Philippines" and clap away to signal I'm not a threat. Anyways thanks for the nostalgia of hearing this again, but from a foreigner this time!

I remember in the late 70's when I was a teen Pepsi and Coke used to have those cash caps which were mostly losers but some had anything from a 25 cents to $20 printed under them. I used to ride my bicycle around town at night and this was back before vandals and thieves were thick as tar and just about every business had a soda machine outside of it and they all had those green returnable pop bottles with the caps. I taped a neodymium magnet to a broken telescopic radio antenna and I would raid the bottle opener cap catcher on all of those machines. I would fill a sack full of them every night then pull off the rubber liners after I got home. I would make about $6 a night which wasn't bad for a kid in the 70's just farting around. Those 16oz sodas were only about 25 cents back then and you could return the bottle for 10 cents. Fun times.

The Pythagoreans in Ancient Greece (followers of Pythagoras, famous mathematician who came up with the Pythagorean Theorem (in triangles A squared plus B squared equals C squared and such)) were willing to kill people over a number... They believed that everything was made up of number (it was what they saw as arche, that's a lot to go into which I'll skip over)... Long story short, they kind of worshipped numbers in a cult-like way and they didn't understand irrational numbers like the square root of 2 and the existence of such numbers was kind of like a cult secret that they didn't like to acknowledge... When a guy named Hippasus of Metapontum thought of irrational numbers and talked about it to the Pythagoreans, legend says that they were shocked and threw him off the boat they were on (possibly leading to him drowning)... ALTHOUGH apparently some sources say he drowned because he told people how to construct a dodecahedron inside of a sphere... Either way, this guy was tossed off a boat and perhaps drowned and it was all done because he was a math nerd who may have brought up irrational numbers... But yeah, in these times they basically didn't have decimal points I think, so they didn't understand numbers like 1.99 or 0.5, this cult just treated it as a secret that they exist xD

Pepsi also got itself into trouble with another of its daft marketing schemes - it promised a Harrier Jump Jet to people who collected 7 million "Pepsi Points". They thought no one would do it, but someone did, having realised that the cost of colleting the points would be far less than the value of the jet. Pepsi refused to honour the offer and a law suit ensued - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_v._Pepsico,_Inc.

@@ermias75ermis2 You can fly a jet without having it armed with missiles and stuff, you know that right? Especially if you just hire someone to fly it for you, for a personal air show or something cool. Imagine having a family member who could just order a stuntman to fly his jet whenever, for entertainment.

Wtf is up with pepsi? The number fever fiasco, technically having one of “The worlds largest naval fleets” didn’t they also offer a Harrier fighter jet as a prize one time? I can say I honestly would not be surprised if the CEO had a pool in his office filled with sharks with laser beams attached to their heads at this point.

I was just months old when this went down. This's less than a year after the Pinatubo eruption. As a Filipino, I vaguely recall this, and it was never mentioned by family, friends and colleagues since the '90s, and I pretty much forgot about it till I saw this vid. Pepsi is still a popular soda brand here in the PH as if none of this ever happened.
@WingMaster5623 жыл бұрын
Cola companies in general have been involved in shady stuff. Not just in the US, but pretty much everywhere like in here, Philippines. Hell remember when sinkholes appeared here because of RC Cola factories used water pumps/poso to siphon water out of the ground? Then months later, it was forgotten. The quirky commercial with soda head was somehow more memorable. Yet I still consume them from time to time.

Idk man, through my whole 25+ years of living here, I've only drank pepsi somewhere between 10 to 15 times. Everything was coke. You will rarely ever see anything pepsi on any store in my place.

A few years back a basketball franchise in the US offered big money to fans who could hit a shot from half court. These contestants were chosen by lottery and had to sink a highly unlikely 3 pointer to get the bag. Someone defied those odds and won, fans in the stands went nuts, hooray. Hold your horses. From what I remember, the team farmed the contest out an insurance company. That company became insolvent very suddenly and mysteriously, like as soon as they had to cover the bet they lost. This was life-changing cash on the line but the legal details were hazy so, of course, the little guy / winner got beat. Some players stepped up and said they'd make the shitty situation right for the fan but that never amounted to much and the news cycle moved on. Anyway, thanks for the violent soft drink story, these videos keep getting better and better Qxir!

dont throw your molotovs at the factories. the people in there are workers just like you. throw them at the execs. the company will still work without the execs so the workers will still be able to survive, but nevertheless youll have dealt a blow. if you blow up the factories, the workers will starve on the streets.
