Reminds me of a story that happened somewhat recently in the US. You can buy "vanity" license plates here in the US that allow you to make your license plate say whatever you want (after approval from your local issuing government). A man decided he would name his license plate "NULL" and somehow it went through. Incidentally, that's what Police would write whenever they forgot what the license plate was, which caused the man to rack up tens of thousands of dollars in fines from vehicles he never owned in locations he never visited.
@renerpho2 жыл бұрын
Ah yes, the classic "zero vs. null". Like the time when the Strava fitness app listed a buoy off the coast of West Africa as the location of one of the most popular activity events (that buoy sits at coordinates 0°N 0°E).
@NSLikeableHuman2 жыл бұрын
It likely isn’t what the officers wrote (“null and void” sounds like something from contract law instead) but instead a common kind of software bug. NULL is usually a special value in a database referring to missing information. A program usually handles these specially, like a user interface leaving a checkbox unchecked or a search algorithm ignoring the row, that depends on the business (or agency’s or…) needs. A programmer likely didn’t handle the special value correctly and instead used the textual value “NULL”, which obviously will conflict with the actual number plate with the same name. Every database system allows a programmer to handle NULL specially, and treat them differently than the textual value “NULL”, and here they (accidentally) didn’t, hence the software bug.
@maowcat15872 жыл бұрын
Right. What I _meant_ to say was null would be entered into the database when a police officer didn't write anything in that field.

Ahhhhh Qxir, but you forget... there is a sizable number of drivers in Ireland in possession of a full driving licence that have never passed a test. The situation was that in order to learn you needed a provisional licence that only lasted until your test and allowed you to drive... but only under the supervision of a fully licenced passenger. However, if you failed the test, you re-applied for a second provisional licence, but this time there was no requirement to have a qualified driver supervising you. So naturally there was fuck all incentive to re-sit the test. Then as Europe standardised the licence from the old paper type to the newer credit-card type, the Irish government realised that about a third of all drivers hadn't passed their test. Some of whom had been driving for decades on their second licence. And what did the Irish government do? -Order everyone who hadn't passed to sit a test? Nah, they just went "Ah sure, we'll give ya all full licences anyways...". This is alongside the recent introduction of basic roadside repair in the driving test... based on a petrol / diesel engine, just as the government announced the envisioned end of internal combustion sales in the next decade or so....

@@carlost856 I can't for see electric cars taking over. There's too many car people who love internal combustion engines. That alone will be the downfall of electric cars. People like cars for the styling and mod potential. Electric cars, especially Teslas, are ugly as sin. They look like something between a plastic catfish and a Walmart tennis shoe. I think they'll be popular for a decade or two, and then fall off like they did in the 30s when they tried electric cars. Especially when the pollution caused to make the batteries and the pollution caused when said batteries catch fire after crashing cause more pollution that an ICE ever will cause if the vehicle lives to 200k miles. Ccross that with the fact that very few cities actually have the proper gear to put out the fires caused by electric cars, and the burn for hours, if not days until the fire department two states over can make it to the wreck to put out the chemical fire. To be completely honest, I feel safer being in a 70s Pinto crash with the gas tank that explodes when it's rear ended than being in a Tesla crash. Then the Tesla's autopilot is unreliable and crashes the car. Then you have to pay $24000 for a battery after five years of owning the car.

@@GetDougDimmadomed Tesla is only one company that manufactures electric car. Teslas ARE shitboxes, I'll give you that, but there are many reliable electric car manufacturers now that the large companies like Toyota, Nissan, Ford, etc. are stepping in. Also, vehicle fires on electric cars are quite rare compared to combustion engine fire. And the electric cars in the 1930s did quite well! It is just that at the time they only really had lead-acid batteries, and as combustion engines improved most chose to buy a petrol or diesel vehicle as the battery technologies did not improve in line with engine technology. Now, we have advanced batteries with high density, and with concern for the environment and dependence on oil as concerns it becomes a wise choice again. There is a solution to the pollution problem too- make the cars last longer to make sure that the initial pollution is less of a big deal over the car's entire lifetime, and make tighter environmental laws apply to battery manufacturers- while applying the same to petrol cars and their oil wells. The winner will be obvious there. Even there, I am pretty sure that you are blowing those pollution numbers out of proportion. 200k miles is much bigger than my car's 200k kilometres (and it isn't that new of a car!) and I am sure that my car- even though it uses the efficient Diesel cycle- has put MANY TIMES more pollution out than an electric car would. Also, did you know that a hybrid car is a thing you can buy? Also, most people hardly give a shit about modification potential. I myself like the idea of buying a car, modifying it for extra practicality etc., and driving it until it is but scrap. Most people like leaving their car stock, as it makes repairs cheaper (the repair manuals don't cover a modified car) and resale easy (buyers know what they're buying) Do you think everybody is a race car driver or a Civic owner? Bloody hell... most don't care how a vehicle places its power onto the road, as long as it gets up a steep hill and gets up to speed in enough time to merge onto the 110 km/h motorway most couldn't care. Those who DO care are often fine with the electric car as they are often capable of putting plenty of power down.

That's not exactly what happened. Instead he racked up $12,049 in fines for traffic infractions he never committed. The "NULL" plate backfired. It sounds clever, but that's not how it worked out.

"Garda" is also the name of the lake I like close-by here in Italy (and the name of the city that gives the name to the lake). When I saw your guards with the "garda" jacket I was almost sure they were wearing some stolen uniforms from around here lol

Wow. I 100% expected this to be some software bug, where that name had somehow been set as a default for empty values or something. I did not expect it to be the guards writing down people's name as "Driver's License" lmao

I like how you revealed how the police's name is different in Ireland was an example of how names differ there, leading to how the Prawo Jazdy was able to confuse them.

One day while walking home i saw a female driver doing something in middle of empty road. It was clear she had some trouble so i wanted to offer my help but i couldn't realize what she was doing, trying to park, turn back, go forward. I watched her like 10 minutes while she kept moving back and forth in middle of empty road and i still had absolutely no idea what she was doing, then finally she turned and went down the road. At this point i wanted to stop her and take her car key really until she takes driving lesson again...

On August 5, 1987, while driving a rented BMW 316 in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, Broderick crossed into the wrong lane and collided head-on with a Volvo. The driver, Anna Gallagher, 28, and her mother, Margaret Doherty, 63, were both killed instantly.

It's an old joke but still a good one :) Someone I was in a car with had a habit of being easily distracted. Just one example. She was driving at 60+ MPH when she decided she wanted a cigarette. Imagine my face when she let go of the steering wheel, turned around in her seat and started to rummage through her bag on the back seat.

This is my favorite episode so far. Just straight up funny as hell the whole way through. Ive calmed down quite a bit but in my teenage years i was a complete fucking traffic menace. Roaring around all hours of the night in a 1989 Chevy Caprice Classic literally looking for jumps, sliding through intersections sideways, pushing dumpsters around, hitting shopping carts and trash cans... Always at night, certainly never to put anyone else' life at risk. I cant even tell you why i did it all, i dont really know. The jumps and drifting were fun though. Still got the car over 10 years later lol

I'll be honest I drove down the wrong side of the road once. But to be fair it was my first time driving in the area, I went from a single lane road to turning on a 6 or 7 lane, and I just turned left, saw there was 2 lanes to the left of me and figured I was good (road was completely dead as it was night). Only for me to notice the other lanes to my right and I was like ????
