First rule of thinkpads is you only get T and X series (including derivatives like W and P). Laptop from other series vary from being just okay to ideapad with a trackpoint
@cephacore2 ай бұрын
L and E Series ThinkPad's are business class budget laptops, so I guess they do have a use. But yeah, I'd always go for a T/X/P series.

i use an L15 gen 3 at work and its genuinely one of the worst laptops ive ever used, terrible screen and the keyboard flexes if u even just look at it, the L series is really hit or miss

I have a L450 and a T470p (i7 with Geforce GPU and not the same chassis as a non-p 470) and there is virtually no difference in the build quality (it's basically the same chassis with a few very minor differences) with the only real difference being the lower case frame being magnesium and the keyboard being backlit on the T. In fact the L series keeb actually feels nicer to type on (more of a clicky switch than the T) but not backlit. The T keeb feels a bit spongy-er

My first Thinkpad was T450s. I bought it back in Jan 2016. Back then I knew little about computer HW etc. Unfortunately it came with horrible HD+ panel. I swapped it for FHD unaware that Lenovo whitelisted screens in xx50 series. It was a struggle to use 3rd party software for brightness control. Looking back I would have installed Linux and be done with it. It was a solid laptop but once I got T480s the difference between intel's 5th gen and 8th gen was clearly noticeable. Now I'm typing this message from T14 gen 1 AMD and I have to say that in 5 years time (T450s was released in 2015 and T14 G1 in 2020) the advancement in HW has been mind-blowing. I also own x270 which is such a fun small versatile laptop to use. If only x270 was released today with the latest ryzen chip...

Never knew they whitelisted thinkpad screens. I love the X series line of ThinkPads, especially the 12.5 inch ones. I currently own a X260 and it's great to use on the go. Up there with one of my favourites.

try searching for a thinkpad X13 amd. I think there are newer versions with AMD Ryzen 6000 cpus. Despite being 13", the narrow bezels on the screen means its close to the old 12" notebooks.

that white line, it was like watching my own laptop screen. from the same company btw, Lenovo T430

Haha it was quite a common issue with their low res TN screens.

Always like seeing new Thinkpad content from you. Random thought: IMHO, the oldest thin and light Thinkpad I’d consider would be the 6th gen X1. You get an 8th gen Intel CPU that natively supports Win11, as well as 4 cores finally, as opposed to the two in the previous generations. Plus having USB C is a must. It’s just modern enough to not really miss anything from modern laptops, or anything in the $150 USD range. Only downside is the slow fingerprint sensor.

Thanks! I covered the 5th Gen X1C, yet to find a 6th gen for a good enough price. Will do one day 👍

I have the L430 and it was a good laptop, bought it used a few years ago on eBay used. Did music for a client on it when my main desktop MB died on me years ago.

Nice, the older versions were quite robust I have to say

frankly, i think the l440 is a way better option. the l450 comes with U class cpu, the l440 with M class. meaning the l440 comes with a socketed cpu that's upgradable. i still use my upgraded l440 to this date. i7 4712qm, 16gb ram.
@cephacore2 ай бұрын
The L440 is essentially the T440p disguised. Such a shame what they did with the L450 but I guess they saw how the L440 was eating away their T440p sales. Certainly an epic ThinkPad, hope to cover one soon 👍

I'll consider getting an L440 sometime soon, upgradeable CPU sounds nice to me

I've been dailing an x250 with the same exact specs (but with a beautiful ips display) for over 2 years and it's great, it sometimes struggles at multitasking, but otherwise it's completely usable (in fact, I'm writing this on the thinkpad)
@cephacore2 ай бұрын
Sounds like a killer mini machine, the IPS screen is a must-have 👍

I bought one of these new as a black friday special and it's been absolutely solid the whole time. The CPU is a bit weak (i5 5200u) but it's done great even running fusion360 for 3D CAD/printing. Definitely get the 1080p panel for these though. They are pretty easy to swap and the 1080p panel is IPS so a good deal better. Though still not as bright as it could be
@cephacore2 ай бұрын
Yep, have thought about replacing it. Would make sense since this screen is literally dying 😂

I had an l540 and it felt cheap as well. I got it with a broken motherboard, which i replaced but the thinkpad promptly killed the new mobo. Truly a cursed machine lmao

I've got a T450s I got for free from work... i7-5600U and 16GB ram and a 512GB SSD and FHD IPS display... Running Mint on it runs very well the keyboard is much better than the keyboard on my X13 G2... It is sad that Lenovo seems determined to turn the thinkpad brand into crap to large extent. The T and X (also P and W) series are built much better than L or E series however, It is something of a shame IBM sold the brand..but oh well.

I have rog strix scar 16 for gaming and I also have this old thinkpad l440 which works perfectly but its battery is not good so I use that for some basic tasks like watching yt and coding. thinkpads are more durable than the new laptops and coding is fun on older devices lmao idk why

The L440 is a TANK! Pretty much a T440p disguised. Not sure how long it'll last but keep ahold of it. They're getting quite rare, can barely find any on eBay.
