More car infrastructure is only going to increase congestion, leading to the need for even more car infrastructure that brings eventually even more congestion. It's a vicious cycle, and while one could say that the road is still needed for other types of travel, a rail system connecting the major cities wouldn't have been that bad to build as well and probably would've better than a highway.

UM and UTM are usually the best, I went to UTM and their urban planning department is considered the best in the country. Also much more affordable than Singapore haha, important for us Indonesians to consider.

@Zaydan Naufal Yea exactly, that is probably a big factor for Singapore, limited job positions for say the URA. However their private sector is pretty large for urban planners given that they work on many multi-national projects too. Oh yeah the absolute best urban planning degrees wouldn't be in SEA, definitely in Europe or East Asia. Western Europe like Netherlands and Germany would be up there. If money is no object then yea give it a go haha, I believe Poland is an affordable option though. I'm not quite sure if they offer Bachelors there though, I only know their Masters programs. My work there involved oil exploration. The “soil” is clay that turns to muck when wet. The valleys and ravines have filled over millennia with vegetation that may be tens of meters deep. When walking on these huge areas the ground shakes like you are walking on jello. We lost a D-9 cat in one of these. It simply disappeared. At no time in history has car infrastructure been beneficial to Americans. It created a system of inefficient land use and environmental destruction that has destroyed almost almost all of the natural beauty that used to exist in this country and left us with a culture where people do not talk to or see their neighbors or participate in their communities because they are inside of their car screaming at other drivers. It created asthma epidemics, increased lead levels for generations, turned rain acidic, and killed millions through plain old blunt force trauma. That's all without even mentioning carbon emissions. But I will agree that some people made billions off of it. So who am i to judge.

Lu tau gak barang apa aja yg mereka bawa ? Pupuk, keramik, ikan asin, snack, pakan ternak, motor dll. Nah kalo pake kereta nurunin distasiun trus mesti unload trus load ke daerah tujuan apa gak stress ? Iya kalo ringan, kalo berton ton ? Maka nya pelaku bisnis rumahan biasa sewa jasa ekspedisi yg langsung antar alamat atau ruko, sampai sini ngerti gak ??

A lot of people in this comment section has already forgotten one important fact that Sumatra island didn't have any single highway until 2017 when Palembang-Indralaya highway finished. Imagine how hard the burden for such an island with ever-growing population to bear. This highway is a backbone of the island economy and people don't realize that this is a primary priority over the secondary like railways. Railways should be built beside highway so people can have a lot of transport choices While these people that lived in developed countries which has well-built highways suggested that we shouldn't build highways What a bunch of f**king clowns. Do you guys have any idea how does it feel living in third world (in economical sense) country?

You could get better transportation and economic benefits from rail. The reason people from countries with a lot of highways advise you not to build this thing is because many of our highways (US) were a mistake

We do have highway/Toll Road since 1986 and we also do have railway too since early 1900s 😑 Most of them operate in North Sumatra where 3rd/4th biggest city in Indonesia resides

It's not about some sort of Western elitism, it's about learning from the West's mistakes. Highways are expensive to build, but even more expensive to maintain. Sumatra now has this large project chained to its economy for ... basically ever. If it's not maintained, it'll very quickly become useless, so you got to keep spending money on it. Railways are more expensive to build up initially but last way longer with comparatively less maintenance, at much higher freight and passenger capacities. It's also not like developed countries build up their highway systems and then added rails once they were rich. It's exactly the other way around; all developed countries started with massive rail systems waaaaaaay before anyone even thought about highways. So if you do want to emulate that, well ... That's not to say that there shouldn't be road connections at all. But does it need to be a fancy highway mega project? Doubtful.

@@Speedkam FYI the Trans-Sumatera is designated for logisitcs arteries from the western-most island to the most populated island, Java, vice versa. The idea is to reduce the cost of transportation that is currently used by most industries. On the other hand, to build rail freight on the landscape like mentioned in the video above is more challenging. Talking abour congestion, it does happen everywhere in big cities--although only inside the cities, not intercities. Take notes that different case happens in West Java/Jakarta, bcs it has very high and concentrated population.

@@insanlutfi thats what I’m talking about. Building of that road will bring unintended consequences. If you are only after transit built fast and efficient rail that can load trucks on board. But I know its your country and your vision and its hard to reevaluate when you are full of optimism
@insanlutfi
@insanlutfi 2 жыл бұрын
@@Speedkam I'm optimistic for the Trans-Sumatera project, but not for many toll road projects on Java island. In Sumatera, a district with two-lane two-way well-maintained road is already a form of luxury, that's why I support the idea of building toll road for this case. It's never a bad thing to have one toll road that connects big cities on one of the largest island. However, if the pattern of building toll road is similar to what happened on Java, then there's no escape for Sumatera from heavy car-dependency. This is currently a big concern from Indonesian citizens, not only for Sumatera, but also for the new capital in Kalimantan/Borneo. The govt is very enthusiastic on promoting electric cars for the new capital, which is better than gas cars, but we all know that mass transits, bikability, and walkability are the top tier for transport system.

I had never imagined my hometown, Medan, would be in one of your video, but here it is :D Parapat is arguably the major hotspot for tourism around Lake Toba. Getting there from Medan in the past took around 5 hours. But ever since the toll road section Medan to Tebing Tinggi was completed, now it only takes about 4 hours. When the section going to Parapat is completed, it's gonna be even faster than that, which hopefully will help drive the tourism of Parapat to its former glory and even more. Also, starting from 2:32 is my favourite section of the video since me and all the people living here know for sure that all the things you mentioned as the ideal conditions for building a toll road are completely thrown out the window for Trans Sumatra, hence why I can't help but laughing throughout the section. It's pretty much a nightmare, lol. One last thing, 3:16 should be a picture of Bukit Lawang, an eco tourism spot. 'Bukit' means hill, but despite the name, the main attraction of the area is actually the Bahorok river you see on the image. The other draw of the area is this is where you can meet Orang Utan upclose in their natural habitat since the jungle surrounding is part of Gunung Leuser national park, one of the biggest protected area for every floras and faunas living in it.
