Another great explanation of how things work and what to be aware of as maintenance items go, Mike. While watching this video I was thinking it might be beneficial to us end users if you were to make a video that identified obscured maintenance items on these same bikes and create a timeline schedule for service intervals similar to the OEM catalog, only specific to Taco Moto products alongside OEM recommendations. It would be a good tool for bike owners and a reminder of what products T/M sells and how they compare to OEM. Unlike tires, brakes, drive line components and wheel bearings the fuel system, electrical connectors, starter and components, and switches and such are sight unseen and easy to overlook as maintenance items. Again, thanks for the tips and solutions.

Hi Mike, thanks for the time you put into sharing your knowledge. Just a quick suggestion regarding the schrader/check valve at the pump discharge. In centrifugal vertical turbine pumps (exactly what the fuel pump is) a condition known as upthrust can cause rapidly increased impeller and volute housing wear. This occurs if a vertical turbine pump is started with zero or low head pressure. I believe the schrader valve will not only prevent backflow when the pump is stopped it will also aid in reducing upthrust upon pump start. I also think the schrader valve will provide a known restriction, or orifice, to aid in reducing upthrust at pump start as well as preventing the sum of all minor system pressure losses allowing the pump to go over the end of its curve and cavitating. Cheers Andrew.

I had a pump failure on my 17 fe350, or rather a low pressure (25psi) situation. Replaced the pump with a quantum and oem filter which fixed it. The quantum's market claimed it was an improvement over stock. Apparently it is not. Thank you for disseminating this information. I will get a taco moto pump next time!

Keep these deep dives coming - very informative and useful info! Curious as to how the Japanese brands compare to KTM in terms of fuel pump reliability and durability? I have the Quantum in my 2019 690 and stock on my 2020 FE350S but your pump looks like a worthwhile upgrade. Also interesting that the stock pump might actually be more durable than most of the aftermarket offerings where I assumed the opposite😕

Great vid with lots of info...glad to say I got my taco pump and moa fuel filter installed in my new acerbis os tank...had a bit of an issue with fitting the screen filter housing on the inlet port but that was easily sorted and other than that the install was simple...only other issue I had was that aft running the bike for few mins it started dying and then was hard to start...turned out to be a clogged injector and once I sorted that I did a 2 night camp ride without a hitch...perhaps might be an idea to run some fuel thru any new pump into a bucket or something so that any remaining carbon or whatever from the manufacturing process doesn't get into the injector - jus my 2c based on my recent experience... experts feel free to correct me... otherwise I feel comfortable knowing that as far as my f pump is concerned, I shudnt have any issues for a while and so less likely to get stranded coz of that 👍🤘

330 hours on my 09 crf450r and no problems with pump so far. I changed the pump filter at 150h and it was full of black soot! Carbon dust maybe, recently removed my clear ims tank to swap back to stock tank and again black soot lining the inside of the tank. The copper would not be an issue for me as i only use ethanol free 98 octane. Been thinking about switching out pump as a precautionary measure it's $600 aussie dollars so i may consider going aftermarket.

I just carry a spare fuel pump in my tool bag. In fact, I carry everything to drop a pump into a fuel bag and remote connect to any Austrian bike through a battery tender connection (or direct wire to the battery). It's about 1 pound but the peace of mind is worth 50 pounds.

2015 FE 501. 70 hours. Just finished a 50 mile braap over a mountain, dropped by the gas station when I finished as soon as took off it wouldn't take throttle. At high RPM it cuts, then a surge of power, then bogging out. I barely got home. I took out the in-line filter it was indeed quite dirty. With a new in-line it's still doing the same. I have a new in-tank filter I can throw in, but I"m thinking I should replace the pump while I'm at it. I'm just wondering if debris has gone passed the in-line and messed with the injector. It was premium gas non ethanol.

Wisely noted and described. We don’t know the ride history of all the pumps we’ve cut open but no doubt there’s some rough service life bikes out there breaking pumps in some hard core ways

Great video. I work ok KTM’s for a living. I have noticed when changing a bad pump or servicing a fuel filter there is a massive amount of carbon in the fuel filter. I’m assuming the other guys are going to brass to “fix” that issue. I’m curious to see how the copper hold up. I’ve always wondered the main cause of failure. We have a lot of people “rebuilding” their fuel pumps that still fail. After rebuilding them they still will not hold pressure. Assuming the body, lines and or the regulator have failed. In the service world we do not have time to do what you do. That you. I’ve always wanted to do this.
@TACOMOTOCO
@TACOMOTOCO Жыл бұрын
You’re in the trenches every day! And as you noted are seeing what we’ve seen as far as failures and problems. Carbon loading in the in tank filter is definitely a known thing and tank filter replacement / maintenance is def an important item. Replacing a pump and regulator as a set is a smart practice to ensure no pressure leak issues are occurring Keep up the good fight out there, you’re doing the lords work

I just changed my fuel pump assembly & what gets me is that the length of the hoses seem to me to force a kink in the top hose when you push the electrical connection end fully into the tank & screw it tight. It seems to me that it pushes the overly long top hose past the top of the filter & then it gets kinked to some degree bending back to go down into the filter. Maybe I'm wrong but that's what it seems like to me with the lengths of things compared to the actual distance in the tank, & that's how it feels with the pressure it takes just to get the electrical plate end tight.

I like the presentation and explanation, but I don’t understand where you came to the conclusion the stock pump is in the 300hr range while the Taco pump is rated at nearly 10x that? What was the smoking gun failure point of the stock pump, build quality appears very similar to the taco pump aside from the weight of the armature and quality of the plastic housing as you stated, are the stock pumps mainly failing by cracking in the plastic housing on average?

I'm curious why these are supplied with the convoluted plastic fuel lines instead of submersible rubber line. The plastic lines seem to break easily and don't allow for easily changing filters.

My 2023 Husqvarna FE 350 (wheeled out the dealership, brand new in March 2023) on 42 hours suffered fuel pump failure just after meeting up with mates at the start of a trail ride. the fuse had also blown. On strip down of the pump, I noticed the fuel strainer was not on the bottom of the pump. Also the in line filter was not a Mahle KL97 but a black plastic fuel filter PA6GF25. I do not believe the different filter or the missing strainer was the cause of the failure as UK fuel is clean and I always run the KTM fuel sock under the tank filler cap. When 12volt is applied to the failed pump, it just gives an audable click. I intend to cut open the pump to determine why it failed. I rebuilt with the All Balls kit - £65. Unfortunatly Taco Moto parts are not available in the UK as far as I can tell.

Since replacing the pump, I cut open the defective pump. the only thing I could find wrong with it was there was a tiny bit of plastic in the impeller. The plastic I found in there is just like the plastic the tank is made out of. I believe it is a bit that is cut off when the holes for the filler, and the pump conections. It got into the pump because, as mentioned in my first comment, the strainer filter was not on the pump when manufacted.
