Thanks for watching! This lesson is intended to cover 4 hi hat tricks that are not commonly used by drummers. While most drummers have heard (or at least seen) these hi hat tricks and techniques, I’ve found that tons of drummers don’t quite know how to execute them. I hope this lesson serves as a jumping-off point for anyone who wants to expand their drumming vocabulary on the hi-hats, and start getting the most of this incredibly versatile piece of our instrument. Enjoy!

Great lesson, the only thing I'd comment is that splashing-open/closing the HH with the left foot can be done using a heel-toe technique, or a flat foot heel up stroke to splash the hats, therefore one wouldn't need to use large movements of a heel hit like in the vid. I will state that the heel hit can produce a good amount of volume for a splash which can be useful, though I'd say that a flat foot heel up stroke I think could produce comparable volume.
@AdamTuminaro
@AdamTuminaro Жыл бұрын
Addressed at 17:00. I don’t know anyone who’s reliably able to do this technique without a twist. (Very tiny feet probably help) My heel doesn’t physically touch any part of the footboard that moves unless the foot turns. Heel toe would give me jammed toes and inaudible splashes.

Another trick I saw Thomas Lang do (just about the only thing Thomas Lang has played that I could actually do myself…) was doubles on the hi hat with the foot. If playing a double (it only needs to be 8th notes) the first beat is a splash as you open the hats again for the second beat, which is a closed sound. Easy to play and sounds really cool in the right place….

The splash I learned by listening to William Calhoun and, fortunately, figuring out what the shit he was doing. The left hand bark I 'came up with' while trying to play Budgie stuff like Peepshow. The stomp... why have I never used it like this?!?! I'm a fraud, a failure, a sham, I quit... Ok, I'm back and... what's this? The slice??!! HOW has this ingeniously tasty little piece of sexy eluded me for so long?! Your hats sound soopah yummy, by the way. Nice video.

In the 1920's there was no hi-hat. The sock-cymbal was invented and it was down low on the floor. The high-hat brought the sock-cymbal up to where the drummer could reach it with a stick.

Slightly off topic but just noticed that your beater hits past 90 degrees. Do you like it to go past twelve o clock? I mean the beater is still flush with the head but seems like sub optimal physics to have the beater go past/over the rocker shaft... is this a feel thing? Or a 'never really bothered me' thing? I just got a dyna-sync and my gretsch hoops were so deep it had this issue. Solved it with a gadget but now I see it everywhere. Just thought it would be interesting to get your take.
@AdamTuminaro
@AdamTuminaro 2 жыл бұрын
It’s certainly a “never really bothered me” situation.” I’ve learned that I can adapt to virtually any pedal setup in about 2 weeks, and play without any inhibitions. Just a matter of letting my body adjust, and tweaking the general spring tension to my liking. I’m not under the impression that there’s any true optimal setup; at least not one that would be distinguishable outside of speed metal. Lol
@CtrlSaltDelete
@CtrlSaltDelete 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely going to work on that slice! Sounds fantastic! It's not exactly forgotten or uncommon, but I love splashing the heel to give an accent to certain hits on the snare, especially in a slower, heavier sort of context. Also splashing before closing on a downbeat on the snare / kick to give a similar but less subtle sort of effect to the slice is a lot of fun :) Edit: oops, didn't mean to reply to this comment haha
