Love your channel. I've just started practicing HEMA, tonight is my second lesson. I wanted to point out that in old Italian "però" means "perciò", like in Dante (eng: therefore). Not "but" as in modern italian. So, the phrase puts even more emphasis on the point, like: "A lion's heart isn't bolder than mine, therefore, to every battle I call you upon."

Even with common animals like horses there’s some real goofy depictions of them in art. Some of the artists seem like they couldn’t be bothered to go outside to look at one for reference.

Definitely! But at least horses have the tendency to resemble horses, while big cats and elephants are like “Wait… This lynx is a dog and this elephant is… Alien?”

A wonderful video that helps to expand out understanding of Fiore's Virtues. I also look at them as a decision loop, or OODA loop ( Observe Orient Decide Act). Something that you can apply to a fight or strategic goals of day to day life and interaction. First we measure and define the "Problem/Challenge/Obstacle" and create the solution. Next we apply our heart, our moral compass to the aforementioned Solution. Is it Morally acceptable, does it show Heart and Courage? If so we move the Fortitude, which I see as core fundamentals. Does your Solution rely on Fundamentals/Solid foundations? If yes move to Prestezza, where having created the solution and tested it both morally and based on core fundamentals we implement it with Speed. Thank you for your insight.

Could you in future do some video on postas with weight in front or back? Fiore shows some postas with weight forward (or center), and others leaning back. In first two masters of "sword in two hands" section he also hints that every posta can be done with weight in front or back (volta stabile). I would like to know your take on why choose one over the other ... as I was taught to always have balance rather in front, I have the feeling that I am missing something. I am also interested in what the "same three movements of the sword" mean, also in the first two masters. FIore does not say anything more about it, and I hae no idea what these movements of the sword are.
@FedericoMalagutti
@FedericoMalagutti Жыл бұрын
If you watched the episode in my Poste series which talks about "Movement" you already have your answer. It's not a tricky position, like in 17th century rapier, but rather is a way to move around when the position is used during the action and not before. As a Posta is both a position you reach as a "guard" from out of measure, or as a pisition (posta) during the fight.
@PetrKavan
@PetrKavan Жыл бұрын
@@FedericoMalagutti Yeah, I watched it, but I have the feeling that you said what it is not, and not what it is :-) Fiore describes shift of the weight (volta stabile) in the same way as, for example, a simple passing step. It suggests that you want to shift weight in some situations, to achieve a result. For example when enemy is too far and you want to attack while switching legs, you do a passing step (mezza volta). So in this way, when is a good idea to do volta stabile? It seems like something you should do by your choice, to change the situation you are in. And it is NOT connected to a side step or lunge, which are the usual actions after which you end leaning to one side. Because with volta stabile you should not change position of your feet.

Definitely an interesting look! I appreciate the dive into why some of the drawings are...questionable, haha. I should be more consistent with it, but whenever I'm addressing why a technique doesn't work, particularly while teaching/coaching, I look to the four virtues, because one of those probably isn't being fulfilled.

Lightning you say? Clearly we've been doing this HEMA thing wrong, because we fail to approach even a tenth of speed of light, let alone a third. Fantasies about being fast enough swordsman to see the Doppler shift in visible spectrum aside, if you take the four animals and read them from bottom up, they align really well with how you have to train. First, you do your basic movements slowly with proper structure (elephant), then you start to do them quickly (mutated dog) and use them when a clear opening presents itself (lion) and finally, you start to set them up and use them for trickery. It even works both for individual techniques and your general swordsmanship skill, and I suspect this was intentional - perhaps a hidden mnemonic code for how to learn fighting that was explained verbally? And I have to say that when the actual animal was at hand, the medieval artists *sometimes* produced a good likeness. Just look at Codex Manesse, where you have some dogs and birds that look acceptable at least, and many, many more that look like five generations of their ancestors lived in a plutonium mine. Seriously, Ulrich von Gutenburg's... eagle?/hawk?/mothra? Still haunts me in my sleep sometimes.

I personally found the Tiger much less accurate than the elephant. The Elephant at least looks like a child drew it. The Tiger looks like if you asked someone to describe a tiger but they just described a Pharoah Hound with a long tail.
