I trekked the Annapurna circuit in the Spring of 1986. We walked about 200 miles over about 12 days. It was almost 40 years ago but I can still remember it like it was yesterday. It's an amazing experience.

A few years ago I did the exact same trekking. I was alone and I went during spring. Very true that the toughest part is getting to Thorong LaPass. I had a mild headache and made it..I have low blood pressure. That might have helped plus God of course.

I noticed several very fast hikers turn around on Thorong La pass before they made it to the top. The altitude starts to get to some that high and you see a lot of tortoise and the hare type situations. Then some guy carrying six wooden crates with glass coke bottles go by in flip-flops. What views that place has, worth seeing it during the rhododendron bloom.

The hike doesn’t look all that great to me. I’d much rather go hiking in Hawaii, with the beautiful waterfalls and pools that you can swim in, and all the beautiful flowers! And no worries about a snowstorm!! 😂🤣

I have done hiking in the Colorado (where i live), mountains but have enough common sense to not do it in the Winter months. People should think before they do these these things. I just can't feel sorry for the people who make these bad decisions.

We enjoyed our climbing in the Tetons. That was as high as I’m going! We were blasted by the change of weather just midway, lightning, hail which covered the trail forced us to take refuge in a bear’s den! I’m 86 years/o and done with climbing!

I only go near Annapurna (or any another circle) route when I have money for a sherpa to be with me at all times. Just in case. And if there is even lowest risk for any bad weather, I am more than willing to pay shelter for me and sherpa. I would never ever climb to actual mountain.

I was familiar with all of these but the Annapurna Circuit “disaster.” Fascinating, but tragic. Largely because many of the trekkers were unprepared. If there is one thing I have learned about the Himalayas, it’s that weather can NEVER be predictive. You might have an idea, but the stochastic process that is high altitude weather, means that even predictions which look certain, are not. Therefore, you must always be prepared for worst case scenarios, even when the circuit “says” you don’t need a tent and cold weather gear, you need to carry both.

I am absolutely blown away by the hubris of these people!! Human beings were not intended to live in a place where the air cannot support life!!! Yet they continue to climb into that space?? It is nothing short of insanity!! Especially when you have people who count on you to come home! I sincerely believe it is a form of mental illness! These people must have been absolute novices, and probably have never hiked like that in their lives! In the Himalayas, the number 1 cause of death is avalanches- which climbers have no control of whatsoever. At best you can maybe fancy yourself having an excellent eye for potential avalanche danger and try to stay in relatively safe places, but it only takes once 😒

@@poutinedream5066 Well,of Course we cant Control when an Avalanche will come First of all i think 99% of Mountaineers arent summiting the Himalayas...and even when ...No Matter If 6000Metres (my highest) or 8000....when you Start your Tour you know you can possibly die...even a 4000M Mountain can throw Something unpredictable at you which you cant survive . And this is nearly the importantest Skill you need...know when to turn around. The other Events Like an Avalanche ...Well its Part of the Deal. You know this before you Start your Adventure. And there are a few Mountains Like the K2 or (even relatively Dangerous) the Mont Blanc where the Chances of having deadly Events are so possibly high that you should avoid those Mountains. My Point was Just About the General Advice to completely Stay Away 😊👍

@diskuslars7527 That's interesting. I've watched so many mountaineering videos on YT, it begins to feel like if you not in the death zone, it dont count 🤣. I climbed Mt Pocono on summer camp when I was 12, and even then, I rode on a male counselors back (he was like 17 and we both got in trouble, it was a Christian camp, and surprise surprise, they were ones thinking about sex. I was just lazy, and he was up for the challenge of doing it with my 100 pounds on his back- we made it back down first and I was naive enough to expect 👏🏽🙌🏻🤜🏼🤝🏻🏆)- 😏 sorry, I digress. You'll never hear me calling Everest a nature hike or tourist attraction. I think a popular misconception has taken hold that because the Sherpas work so hard, that means it's easy. It doesn't sound like you're ego climbing, checking off locations, when all you're really thinking about is the day you can brag about climbing Everest or K2. I think people like that have already caught summit fever before they even got on the plane, and bad things are bound to happen. If everyone shared your logical, measured approach, I think the number of deaths would be much lower, especially in the Himalayas.
