Don't forget that adapting DSLR lenses is still a great option when you are on a tight budget and lots of these lenses are selling for really low prices on the used market right now. I would get the Z5 or R6 with the adapter and could probably even fit the whole trinity of used (third party) lenses into the budget.

im actually in the market for a tamron g2 70-200 for my z6. I did find one on my local fb marketplace/craigslist, but I need to get a tapin console to make it work with the z6 which pushes the price up. I'm tempted to spend 800CAD more and just buy a used FL/vr3 nikon.
@exploresouthwest
@exploresouthwest 3 жыл бұрын
That's actually exactly how I did my "under $4000" kit switching to a new mount system with the Z6. There are still a few gaps in Nikon's native Z mount lenses that are missing or are a bit out of my price range, but I can just get a tried and true F mount lens if I want something to tide me over as new native lenses are created. And the used market for those F mount lenses is huge; from good 2-3 year old lenses on used sites and auctions; to finding decades old manual lenses at garage sales and estate sales for under $50. I got a 50mm 1.4 for $20; it's fun to play with and the smallest lens I got, I can fit it in a pants pocket.

@@Titanpharao Great that you can carry all that gear on extended trips. I love the Lumix 100-300 F4.0-5.6. It's great for birding and wildlife. However it probably won't travel overseas with me. My travel day pack includes water bottles, usb power packs, rain gear, snacks, etc, which limits the amount of photo gear. Also some of the tours on my wish list limit total baggage to 10KG. I wish more reviewers would factor size into the discussion.

The kitzooms are good compared to the more expensive MFT lenses at smaller apertures, so for daylight shooting and portability, I choose two or three lightweight kitzooms to cover a wide range. I usually stop down for landscape stuff anyway. The Lumix 14-140mm is the core of my vacation setup, the Lumix 100-300mm for telezoom and the Olympus 9-18mm for wide. But I can be happy and enjoy myself with just the 14-140mm. If all my gear werd stolen, I'd probably get MFT again and look for a deal with a body and a 14-140mm lens together. And build on that again.

4 reasons a Sony A7ii is better than a Z5 or Canon RP - Native AF Sigma, Tamron, Samyang/Rokinon, and Viltrox lenses plus a collection of other brands in manual focus plus adapters for Canon EF, Sony A and Nikon F. The Z5 is likely a better camera (not sure the RP is better) but the lenses are steep until they share the mount specs. Even the Sony 50mm f/1.8 is half the price. The Z5 and Z50 are definitely the right move from Nikon but they need to share the mount with 3rd parties before Canon does to win back market share. If Canon gets 3rd party support before Nikon then Nikon is sunk. They will become the next Pentax.

$2500-3000 on eBay with one generation older camera can get you a dream setup for sure. As much as all brand new is tempting you’d be paying twice as much for a marginally better kit. More lenses is way more fun to have than a slightly newer body.

I love these videos and appreciate the humor that you put into them, but I question the call Chris made. I would argue that if you're primarily a stills shooter AND are looking for value AND you have to buy new, I would suggest looking at the tried and true DSLR. Nikon D750, Nikon D610, Canon 6D mark ii and the Pentax K1 have kits that come with lenses. If you're willing to consider aps-c sensors, then you get even more value options. Still, these are fun to watch. Great job, guys.

Leaving Sony aside, he also passed the Z6, despite the CFExpress issue, Z6 is a cheaper a7 iii and crushes the Z5 (A7 II in Nikon body). Taking his shoes I guess they tried to stick without sale prices, A7 III and Z6 even if selling under 1.5K$ are technically 2k$ cameras, harder to justify. A7Riii is again over budget.

Agree with the stills photography choice. Ehhh maybe, while it's certainly not a bad camera, it is starting to get long in the tooth. I have a feeling we'll be seeing a replacement soon that has real time tracking and better video recording, as well as the body enhancements from the A7sIII. Can completely see why Sony wasn't even considered in the APS-C range, though. Still waiting on a lot of updates, there. (I say this as an A6500 user that was considering either jumping to full frame, or buying my first 'expensive' APS-C lens six months ago.) If the a6600 were a bit compelling, a kit with it and the 16-55 wouldn't have been bad at all. It's a pretty stellar optic.

@@ziginox no one has a better apsc lineup than fuji. But for fullframe nothing comes close to sony if you’re on budget in terms of stills. Primarily because you can get great lenses at great prices like you can easily get a 24-70 f2.8 for around $700-800 for sony. In canon and nikon realms they cost over $2000 as they lack third party lenses

Nice video! As a long time Nikon shooter, for the equivalent of $4000 in the UK based on current Nikon promotion pricing for the Z series, my shortlist would be (A) Nikon Z5 + 24-200mm kit, 14-30mm, 50mm 1.8S, or (B) Nikon Z7 + 24-70 f/4 + FTZ kit, 50mm 1.8S, or (C) Nikon D780 + 24-120mm kit, Tamron 35mm VC, Tamron 85mm VC. Option A would be the most versatile small travel photography package, option B would provide the best image quality and allow for affordable expansion with used F-mount glass and option B would be a great DSLR hybrid package for travel and portrait work.

First, this your kit does not have to be based on covering the whole FOV range with zooms. If I’d start anew I probably will go primes only until I am happy - at which point I might pick up a small standard zoom for p&s. On ff I’d go with reasonably fast 35-(50)-85mm primes and if there is money left probably a 20mm - done. Canon is currently charging too much, so I’d probably go Sony 7a3 or Nikon z6 II - add primes according to budget. Maybe even some old school manual focus lenses, to stretch the budget. ...but the XT4 (or XS10) is a great deal, add Viltrox 23-33-56-85mm primes and I probably still have money for a super wide (zoom) and other stuff (especially with the XS10). This is probably the most bang for the Buck kit. Context I have Canon and Nikon DSLRs and lenses. On paper I like the R6* but imo is too expensive. *they are going to pull a Canon and release a R6 Mark II, with a 24-26mpx sensor, updated chipset and another 20% price increase in 2 years...

A very important mindset I'd have when building out a new kit is expandability. Skimping on a body or lens with the idea of "I'll just replace it later" is just shooting yourself in the foot later down the road. I'd build a kit that has gear you'll be using for 2-3 years that covers as many bases as you can out the gate and add lenses you use less often as you get money later. So it's super important to be choosing a mount ecosystem you'll be happy with for a while.

Great for when you're going somewhere and just want to shoot some casual photo's with the camera suddenly becoming quite nimble without the grip attached. It also makes putting the camera in the hands of people less familiar with photographing a much nicer experience if you'd like to sometimes also want appear in photos with that expensive camera you bought :-D. No zooming in-and-out to confuse things as the 50mm focal length speaks for itself :-)
