So about that room he spawned into. In beta there was a bug that could cause you to fall thru the block you were standing on on your last logout and end up in a area below. This is why you could lose the hardcore part of this challenge just by logging out. Also I have had this happen in single player as well.

Assuming I know the sand dupe Jasano is talking about. For one: you need an End Portal, which came out in 1.0 Release. And two: You need Slime BLOCKS. Which weren't a thing until 1.8 Release

There are sand dupes in Beta 1.7.3 though, using pistons. Do they work in multiplayer, is the question?
