This video is right on the money, I’ve owned a S&W 57 6 inch since the late 80’s. Remington stopped making the 170 Gr JHP loading , so I have to hand load em ,when I go to the range and lite off the first six rounds, somebody will always walk up to me and ask, is that a 44 Mag ? And I reply no it’s the other one , I can see their brains trying to figure out what other magnum, then I tell em it’s a 41 Remington Magnum. Then they will say never heard of the 41 Magnum .

I purchased 2 Ruger Blackhawks in 41Mag back in 1981 and have used them over the years for deer and predator hunting for the last 40 years. I've taken probably 35 deer with these revolvers and I've lost track of the coyotes, fox, hogs, etc., that bagged. Extremely hard hitting flat shooting and devastating on big game and a little less recoil than the 44 Mag. A great round.

You are speaking of the 41 Magnum. I never knew who made the case or the round but I owned a Ruger single action 41 magnum pistol with a 4 5/8" barrel between 1973 and 1982. It was the best single action pistol I have ever owned. I purchased that caliber because I had the opportunity to shoot the 357 and the 44 magnum. The 357 was a little weaker than I could handle and the 44 magnum was too powerful to shoot well with one hand. I decided on the 41 magnum and purchased a pistol that had that caliber....the Ruger single action. It was very very accurate and could hit 8 inch paper plates at 150 yards consistently from a rest. I hated to lose that pistol but I no longer have it. It is the greatest reloading caliber I have ever had.

Couldn’t agree more on how overlooked this cartridge is. The ballistics of the best .41 Mag loads are nearly identical to the old .38-40 High Speed load for Marlin 94 and Winchester 92 rifles. I happily grew up with my great-uncle’s Marlin in that caliber, then on its 3rd barrel. He had shot out two previously in 30 years as a guide in northern NH in the days when guides could take two deer for the “sports” they were guiding.

Yes agree 100%! The .41 mag is my favorites large caliber handgun round. I got my first in 1978! It was a mdl 58 M&P. I later bought a mdl 57 6”. I did hand load back then also and have taken 5 deer and 4 wild boar with the .41 mag. Although I think the recoil reduction was listed less than 25%. If memory serves me it was 15% to 20% max although I’ve owned several .44 mags also and fired both right next to each other and can personally tell zero difference in the full house mag loads! lol! Although the .41 definitely has a “ crack” to the report that I’ve not heard with other rounds including the .44 mag in the same relative loading and fired from the same barrel lengths. Great you decided to help revive what I believe is the best “ old school” mag handgun cartridge!

It seems to me that the 41 magnum fell into a pothole that the 10mm teetered on the edge of for a long time. A law enforcement cartridge that was touted as perfect, yet demanded too much of the shooter and pistol to be practical for everyday police use. Thanks for a very interesting and thought provoking talk. I very much enjoyed it.

@Medium Speed Some Drag I normally hunt in the cedar swamps. I live near lake Superior and it's heavy cover up here. 5O to 75 yards is usually the maximum sight distance in the swamps. I hunt with iron sights and anything over that is pushing it for a very accurate shot. I did shoot one and in a field once at about a hundred and ten yards, but it was not a clean kill. I had to go up and finish it. At that range with a 6-inch barrel you really can't be accurate enough to ensure a clean kill.
@illinoisbowhunter10094 жыл бұрын
@@thumper4068, I must respectfully disagree. With open sights, yes, perhaps 110 yards is not practical, but with a nice 2x (or 4x) scope 110 yards should be considered to be well within effective range of a good hunting load in the .41.

My first magnum was a 41 magnum Blackhawk. The very first round downrange, I was expecting recoil, so I had a good grip. When the gun stopped moving my arm was pointing straight up. After that no issues, but I clearly recall that first shot. It just wasn't the same as the 38 Special................ San Antonio, Amarillo, adopted. Several other Texas departments allowed it. Kansas Highway Patrol adopted, and it stayed adopted quite a while. Not sure about others. Elmer did push for the round. But Remington didn't listen to him. He wanted a 200 grain semiwadcutter at 850 - 900 fps "police load" (as you mentioned) which was to be the INITIAL offering. Then later a magnum load with a 210 grain bullet. Instead, Remington made the magnum load first, and when they finally did get around to the police load, they used a 210 grain bullet at 1000 - 1100 fps. Every round of this stuff left a very plain "plating" of lead on the inside of the barrel. Not good. I did always wonder why Elmer wanted the 41 mag for a police cartridge. I think I finally found the answer. In some of his early writings, he commented several times in several places that the 41 Long Colt was a far more effective fight stopper than its ballistics would indicate 💡 and in its original heeled bullet form it was a true 41 caliber, not the 0.386 that it became when they moved the bullets to inside the case. Suddenly, I could visualize why Elmer thought that a 41 caliber cartridge would make a good police cartridge. Your thoughts about a "41 Special" coincides with several other people. While it is a custom build and a custom loading, you can get a "41 Special" revolver. I agree that if Remington had done just exactly as you said, the 41 magnum would be far more accepted and widespread. I ended up selling my 41 - not because I didn't like it, because I REALLY DID like it. Rather because I found it harder and harder to find ammo - and since I didn't reload at the time, and online purchases were unheard of back then, ammo availability became a real issue (I really did like it). So, I sold it, and because of my ammo difficulties haven't bought another one. But I still recall that gun and that cartridge vividly, and with fondness. You are 100% correct. It is a far, far better cartridge than its popularity would indicate.

What I did with my 41 magnum Ruger is this. I reloaded my cases. I would load the cases down a bit from full charges and use them for range shooting. I adjusted my rear adjustable sights for the 25 yard target. I would aim at 6 o'clock when at the range and the bullets would hit the center of the bullseye. When hunting I would just change to factory loads and the pistol would be automatically sighted on the blade at 150 yards. The blade was wide so you had to imagine quartering the blade at 150 yards to get a good shot. After a thousand or two rounds through that pistol it was sighted exactly at the center of the blade and when I shot it at 150 yards one day with other friend shooters that were shooting at the same distance they all had bigger groups than me. When they saw I was shooting a pistol better than they were shooting their rifles they all packed up and left.......never to shoot with me again.

@ExF1Guy2 жыл бұрын
@@wk3818 If you haven't bought the brass yet, I have a suggestion. Buy 41 mag brass and load down to special power levels. As long as you can keep your loads organized, this has 2 distinct advantages: 1. If you decide you want to load more magnum level loads, you can easily switch. 2. You won't get a fouling ring partway down the chamber. When I started loading 357/38 for my rifle, I found that after 50-100 rounds of 38 special, the carbon fouling in the chamber ahead of the case mouth made it difficult to chamber 357 loads. Now I just load 357 mag brass to my desired power level. Just my 2¢
@alfonsorodriguez64374 жыл бұрын
It is also a favorite of mine and I own a SW Model 657 with s 6" barrel. The SS version is not made anymore. SW still produces the model M57 in blue. For those that think the 10mm is as powerful as a 41 Mag, they are mostly wrong. A 10mm at it more powerful can achieve the lower level of 41 Mag (600 Foot pounds or a bit more), the 41 Magnum depending of the shooting platform, revolver or single shot pistol, can achieve 900+ Foot Pounds and 1200+ Foot Founds in a single shot pistol like a Contender where gases do no escape thru the cylinder barrel gap. Power difference between the 41 mag and 44 mag is minimal. It is a good hunting and metallic silhouette revolver and if you are a hand loader you can use lower power loads for self defense. Now you can get 41 Special cases for the same purpose as the 44 Special serves in 44 cal. Hodgdon's Trail Boss is perfect for lighter loads since it fills the case completely insuring a consistent burning rate without dangers of pressure spike or detonation. having served in the military (artillery captain, I also worked intel. and R&D) and as a federal LEO for the old INS and then USCBP , I can attest to the fact that 90% of all LEO's don't know their asses from a hole in the ground when it come to firearms and in fact some are so intimidated by firearms that it makes them unsafe. I received very extensive training in firearm with the federal government and was required to qualify three time a year including a night shoot. Under that type of regimentation even the worst can get better though not necessarily excellent. In my time there was (I am retired now) an economic incentive, qualify or get retrained and cannot come back to work until you qualified. The intense training was to avoid law suit due to accidental shootings claimed by many lawyer even when it was a good shooting. Many of our officers carried a half million dollars in additional legal insurance with a rapid dial to a lawyer. I never did but for those with minimal skills it was a good protection. By the way, most women respond to firearms training better than male because the do not bring in bad habit or preconceptions. The also seem to have better eye to hand coordination. We carried in my time, Beretta 96 and then HK P2000. Back to the 41 Magnum, I think it better overall to the 44 Mag and Clint Eastwood had to use 41 Mag revolvers initially in his Dirty Harry movies because of the scarcity of Model 29's . You could not tell the difference because the M57 and the M29 are identical even when looking down the barrel as in the initial opening credits of Magnum Force, the second DH film.

The 41 Maggie is my favorite cartridge. If you hand load for the 41 it opens up the possibilities tremendously. I've got nearly 100 different loads chronographed through various models with different barrel lengths. The biggest downside to the 41 is the rifling twist that most production firearms have. Ruger is 1-20", S&W 1-18.5, Contender and Marlin are even worse 1-20. It is too slow to shoot anything over about 230 grain very accurately. Henry is a tad better at 1-18. Freedom Arms 41s are 1 in 14" which will stabilize anything up to 300 grains, though there is a point of diminishing returns as far as bullet weight goes. The Match Grade Machine T/C barrels in 41 Mag and 414 Super Mag are 1-16 which may be about perfect for the 41 Mag. I've shot 280 grain loads out of the MGM 414 and they are extremely accurate.

I don't know the velocity, but the load was near max, very accurate in all my revolvers and the bullet got down range very quickly.

I've been shooting .44 mag. since 1971 and you just about sold me on .41 mag. But only if they build it in a smaller , lighter revolver. I don't have a problem with the recoil , but I struggle with the size and weight to carry when hiking around the mountains. In my old age I think I am going to just go with .357 .

Thank you Sir for sharing a wonderful video on the 41 magnum, You are spot on with the 41 magnum. Years ago before I got into reloading, my neighbor was into reloading for his blackhawk 44 magnum. He invited one day to let me fire it. Now understand I had never till that day had ever shot any kind of revolver and very little shooting experience with even with shotguns and rifles, so I was a newbie to shooting any revolver. My neighbor was really a big show off how smart he was at reloading which I didn't know anything about at the time. Anyway we were at the range one day and he handed me his 44 to shoot. Well when I touched off a round my god, I had never had anything hit me so hard in my life as what that 44 did to me, it was all I could do to hold onto the thing. I turned around he was laughing his silly head off at me, I guess i must have been something to see when I touch off that round. I actually thought that the weapon had blew up from recoiling so hard. Anyway after all the dust settled down and he finally quite his laughing he told me that he had loaded up some really hot rounds and he wanted to see what would happen when I touch off the round. Lets just say, I will never own or shoot another blackhawk 44 magnum again and i never again took any of his offers to shoot any of his weapons or ammunition ever again. Once was enough for me and from that awful experience I became a fan favorite of the 41 magnum for over 30 years now, target practicing and hunting, it's an excellent round for all the game I have taken from small game to deer, very large hogs and black bears, I would not be afraid to take on elk and brown bears with it either, the only thing that has prevented me from taking an elk or a brown bear is I don't live in those areas where that kind of game is so I never had the opportunity yet to do so. I greatly appreciate you taking the time and sharing your knowledge on the 41 magnum, it is a greatly misunderstood magnum for sure. Thank you again Sir. Respectfully, dd

I'm going to get one sometime in the near future. My buddy's dad kept asking for me to find him one, but was unable to do so at that time. I was mostly dissuaded by the fact that he had the beginnings of alzheimers, and it wasn't a good idea. I no longer live near him, but I keep tabs on him through his son. I can't get over the fact how much he talked about that 41mag. It has been on my mind & now you come out with this video. I reload, so no big problem for me. Thanks for reinforcing what I've been thinking about. God Bless you, the Mrs. and thank God Benny is still here!

Great video... 41mag is a great round for white-tail deer last November a very good friend of mine took a buck of 200lbs, but I want to say the thing with the 41 is that it really is not available that much on the store shelves soo if you don't reload your going to have a problem with finding it in your local stores...

Good morning Sir. I was checking out the different channels here on KZbin and the title of yours caught my eye. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video and, I have to whole heartedly agree with what you had to say. Although I don't have all of the specifics on the different loadings, the .41 Mag is my favorite over the .44 Mag. Back in 1967, I purchased a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 Mag, it has the 6" BBL. I too got "fooled" by the two different loadings that Remington put out. The first box I bought was the 210 gr. lead police load, although I don't remember it being called that. That box went down range very fast. I then loaded a cylinder of the 210 gr. Jacketed loads. WHOA. What a big difference. I took more than half a box home with me. In 1967 also, I bought the RCBS JR press. Back then you received the RCBS reloading dies and shell holder of your choice, .41 mag, for less than $50. As another commenter said, the recoil with the factory grip frame could and would bust a knuckle. I took my Blackhawk back to the gunshop and had the Super Blackhawk grip frame, trigger and, hammer installed. The gunsmith also polished up the action. This is one sweetheart of a handgun. I used to carry this handgun whenever I went Deer hunting up in Modoc County here in California. These are big Mule Deer and, they have to be at least a three pointer ( CA count) and, it performed splendidly on the Deer I took. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and knowledge on this wonderful caliber. You have a new Subscriber here. Stan

I have a S&W Model 58 with a 4" barrel. I reload for it, as ammo is way too expensive for it. I don't shoot it much as I shoot my Colt Python with 38 Special loads, and I love to shoot my two 44 Mags, both S&W. Therefore, I only load that Model 58 with full power self-defence loads, and only practice with it every few months. It works WELL for me. I really like it.

One of my favorite ctg. I have a Dan Wesson heavy barrel .41 mag. They are very accurate. Dan Wesson made a .41 Super Mag, which is the .41 mag on steroids. The 414. It was used for 200 yds. Steel Silhouette targets at IHMSA. Great video.

I'm a 41 Mag loony and got a 414 SM barrel for my Contender from Match Grade Machine; brass from Starline. I'm shooting bullets a couple hundred fps faster than the Rem. Mag without pushing the limits pressure-wise. Just got a 300 grain bullet mold from Mountain Molds and can't wait to try them out in the 414!

Back in the early/mid 70’s I owned a Blackhawk in .41. One time I took it to the range where we were qualifying with the .38 spl. After the official doings I brought out the Blackhawk & fired a few rounds. A good friend asked to try it and was favorably impressed, said it was much better to shoot than a .44 mag he had tried. Later he bought a model 58 (.41mag) . He complained to me about the recoil in the mod 58 & shortly got rid of it for that reason. I felt that the different grip shape made the difference. As to a .41 spl, the gun shooting it would have to be an N frame & duty carry would be the same problem as the mag. Better for practice is of course true.

A very nice video. I have had some experience with the 41 Remington Magnum. I only own three. My favorite is a Ruger Blackhawk with a 4-5/8 inch barrel. These come standard with the regular alloy grip frame. I have since changed that out to a Bisley style steel grip frame that add a few ounces of weight. It is an extremely comfortable gun to shoot, even with magnum loads. My favorite load is a 220 grain cast bullet at about 950 fps..

I have had one for many years and love it. Mine is extremely more accurate than I am. I learned to hand load on the .41 because of cost and no . 41 Specials available. I have made some very nicer down loaded hand loads 210 grains hard cast at about 1000fps, pleasant to shoot, clean, and accurate.

Paul Smock; Brian Pierce, the Handloading editor for Handloader Magazine, put out an article several years ago on loading the .41 Special. Starline makes cases for this round. I don't remember the issue of that magazine but I'm sure a person could find it very easily by either Google or contacting Wolfe Publications.

Harrison Mantooth, Thank you for the info, I appreciate it .When I got it, many many years ago, I was told that they didn’t have a special, so when I complained about a box was almost $30. He told me that if I bought the powder, lead , dies, etc., I could use his scale and press, etc., and he would teach me how to reload in his store. He suggested a combination and I tweaked it slightly. I have not sought out the Starline brass as I had not seen it, but I will, thank you.

41 magnum is one of my dad's favorites. Not that common though. My idea was to get a Ruger GP 100 Lipsey's edition 10mm auto and either bore it out to 10mm magnum or get a separate cylinder for it. It's only 0.01" smaller, so essentially the same ballistics and has an abundant variety of projectiles on the market. One beautiful revolver that shoots 40 s&w, 10mm auto, and 10mm magnum is very handy. Of course all would be on moon clips. Oh and 38-40 can be used in a separate cylinder. Love that old cowboy round from the 1870s. It was originally equivalent to 40 s&w but can be loaded up, especially in a rifle/carbine.

I was one who owned a M57 S&W and liked it. I hand loaded for it and at the time had tons of linotype so my cast bullets were good and hard. I've never shot any deer or anything like it with the caliber so all I can opine is that it's accurate and fun to shoot. Not much less than the .44 mag. But thanks for this video Cap because as you said there's practically no information or comments on the .41. I'm afraid they gun writers are busy killing off the .40 S&W and .357 SIG now in favor of the "do everything" 9mm?? Some gun writer should publish chronograph results for the .357 SIG, it's the most consistent and accurate cartridge out there. Standard deviation is the lowest I've seen for any cartridge.

Also if you recall the lighter loads were called “ medium velocity” loads and they also did the exact thing for the .44 mag too. They had “ medium velocity” loads for it also. And I also agree about the confusion in the commercial loadings in both the .41 and .44 mags it could be confusing to non gun aficionados! Lol!

Smith & Wesson introduced the Model 57 in 1964. I believe that both 6" and 4" barrels were available. There was also the Model 58. The Model 58 was the "Police" version; 4" barrel without a shroud for the ejector rod. There was no adjustable sight, the top of the frame had a groove and there was a low ramp front sight and the grips were service grips. A model 58 would make a very nice self defense gun if you could carry a "N" frame.

Around 1972 I had one of those Model 58. It had a 4" bull barrel. Accurate as all get out. I could not find factory loads and had to get cases and reload my own. I also cast my own bullets. Great gun, not punishing to shoot like the .44 mag. I wish I still had it.

Call this the mystic of the 41 magnum fully explained. Thank you. It’s more popular then we think. Think about this we don’t see new ammo often because it’s sold out as fast as it shows up. Everyone goes straight to the 44 magnum. Funny most rifle owners don’t go straight to the 458 win mag. Lol the 41 mag is a good choice for the guys who can’t handle a 44 mag but want something more powerful than a 357 mag. Thanks for explaining the 41 mag for the lame.

I just went to check prices on this cartridge. On Cheaper Than Dirt site they have 20 rounds of 41 Remington Magnum ammo for $43. It's the Hard Cast Long Wide (LWN) 265 Grain that has an advertised muzzle velocity of 1350 fps which gives you a muzzle energy of 1072 ft/lbs (if my math is correct) which is a hellava round. But that price! A little salty. But that kind of performance comes at a price. And if it becomes more popular, it will come down. Nice topic of conversation.

Great video. The .41 Magnum is a good but unappreciated cartridge. An old friend of mine used a S&W model 57 with a 6 inch barrel while hunting in the heavy growth areas in Maine. When we weren’t hunting, we would go to a gravel pit for some target practice. We shot my Ruger Super Blackhawk in .44 Magnum and his Model 57. We both did much better with the Model 57, shooting at buckets and jugs at 50 to 100 yards.

I'm a hunter, reloader, and bullet caster. For someone like me the .41 Magnum is ideal. The ONLY thing that keeps it from being a favorite and the best of all time is it only being chambered in .44 mag sized guns. Being a handloader, I would rather load down the .44 in that case. Furthermore, if the .41 was chambered in a L frame you would most likely be giving up the recoil advantage. .41 in a lighter weight than a n frame would be fantastic. As it is.....44 (.429) all day! Great video. Thanks for posting.

If recoil is the issue, then it doesn't make sense to shoot a large magnum cartridge in a lighter frame. I don't mind carrying a few extra ounces on my hip.
