One of my special 4th of July memories: My family packed up the full sized Dodge van and camping trailer and took a 7+ week road trip from our home in Southern California all the way to the Northeast coast and back. We spent the Bicentennial Independence Day (7-4-1976) on a beach in downtown Boston. Fireworks and all. Road trips with that van and trailer still remain some of my greatest memories.

We too pulled a trailer behind our van to go camping, etc. I was around, but too young to remember the Bicentennial well, but still great times.

life was so much simpler then..... and i miss it. now days, where i live, fireworks (big ones, not fountains) can pop off at any time, on any day of the week or year. midnight on christmas was a surprise this past year, but i heard some on easter, too, so...... fourth of july back in the day was special because it was the only day of the year that we could play with fireworks, or see a really nice display (people went all out for the bicentennial in '76), but it's not special anymore because people do all those special things every weekend, and nobody really cares about the historical significance much these days. 😞

Although fireworks are used a lot more these days, I guess I am lucky they are pretty random if not the 4th and New Years. But I am with you...it was so much more special just to simply have them on those holidays only where it was tradition and brought a lot of joy because we didn't get it a lot. Funny, I know it has been hundreds of years, but it would be nice if people still at least acknowledge what the day was, and that is not just a time for mattress sales. Thanks for the comment.
