Land rover perentie. I've never been in one, and probably wouldn't recommend any other land rover, but I've heard from mates and mechanics that they do what they are built to, and seeing them in television and films doing just that. First saw one going all over Australia in bush tucker man, driven by major Les Hiddens. Otherwise, I've been in my dad's 80 series from Darwin to Esperance and everything in between a couple of times, he kept it in mint condition from brand new. He looked after it for 30 years and it looked after us. All it had was a stainless steal exhaust and regular Toyota servicing and it was a perfectly capable tourer for a family of 6!

Maybe the WWII Willys Jeep is the best 4WD. They were handy in every land environment--snow, mud, gravel, sand, rocks, forest, jungle, whatever. The Brits took them home after the war and copied them because they were so darn practical, using Brit parts and hardware and with some modifications to work better on Brit farms and country roads. They became Land Rovers and were spread all over the remains of the British Empire in Africa and Asia, making them attractive to the Japanese (and other nations') auto makers. Americans and Canadians took to them after the war and they evolved into the range of Jeeps we know of today. They also inspired other manufacturers to build vehicles like International Harvester's Scout, Ford's Bronco, Chevrolet's Blazer, GMC's Jimmy and the Dodge Ram. Without the Jeep, there might not be the private, recreational 4WDs as we know them today.

Best 4x4 ever made in my opinion is the Patrol Y61. I have great respect for the landcruiser but we (UN) tried taming the Sahara with the landcruiser and they kept getting chewed up and spit-out until we tried the Y61. It only mcar that made the crossings in one piece. It's why the UN bought so many of them for the saharan and sub-saharan market. Kaizen values must have levelled the field by now.

4WDriving since 1978 I have had every Nissan, G60 to 2000 Model and everything in between. 2001 I purchased a Discovery 2 and I have to say that this set the bench mark for all the other manufacturers to follow. Since that model there hasn't been much of an improvement for off road ability in all that is available today. I know you can all talk about reliability but for off road ability you are not going to out class a Discovery 2. I have 2 Discovery 2 V8 HSE with ACE, and I also have a 2023 Pajero Sport which is also a very capable off roader very under rated. The Pajero has a better 4WD system but I prefer the Disco's any day for off roading. Ronny needs to do a comparison with the Discovery 2 vs Grenadier to show that in 20 plus years of innervation there is little if any between them for off road ability.

Best 4x4 depends upon the purpose you want it to serve. For actual ability Suzuki. Problem is you can't fit much gear in them. Practically then for me it is the 4.2 litre GQ and GU Patrol, closely followed by the 80 Series and 105. The biggest problem I found in rating the GQ so highly is I often didn't notice that I'd just been through a tough track. I would often only notice when other people told me how sketchy something was in their rigs. This happen quite a few times before the penny dropped and I realised what a difference the GQ made. It just has much better balance all around the vehicle. The GU is very close. the 80 and 105 are really good, but more boaty.

The best out of the box 4x4 is a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, but if you mean best tourer, or best tow vehicle or best 4x4 truck (Unimog), or if you are going to drop 70k on it, then choose something you can put portal axles, 40" tyres, lockers etc... then you have a rock crawling animal
