If you make cold-pack dilly beans with those purple beans the liquid in the jars will turn pink when you process them. Doesn’t hurt the flavor at all, but it looks really cool! As for no-till, when we had a tiny backyard garden in CA, it worked great. We could buy a couple of bags of compost and make it work. In northern AZ, there is no leaf mold to use, wood chips are expensive and encourage termites, and our soil quality is poor. We need to till the surface of our beds to add compost and break the crust. Our goal is to grow as much as we can, and by the way, your Microboost is amazing. To us no-till is a fashionable idea, but where we live, it does not work. Have a great week!

Based on what I’ve learned with this experience, I’d like to ask this week what you know about ten million dollars 😃 Have a good weekend. Hope us a bit north of you get through the frost this weekend ok. Gonna be a lot of dish towels out in the garden. Maybe you all want to look at carrying row cover fleece... gonna buy when prepping for next year this winter.

Tillage is a spectrum. From absolute no-till to excessive tillage. There are a number of good gardeners and farmers along that spectrum. I practice much less tillage that you guys do, but respect what you do. Thank you for all of the information you provide. We don't have to agree on everything, but the exchange of knowledge is key.

Really good episode! I am one of the people who first started taking an interest in gardening due to reading about things like Back To Eden, and one of the biggest things I've come to realize after researching through the years is there isn't any one size fits all method, you have to be adaptable to fit your circumstances, and there's a lot of factors. I also think that people get too invested in "their way", as though other ways are "cheating." We're all trying to grow good, healthy food, however we can do it the best and easiest way isn't cheating!

Our gardens are no till.. we have never tilled. Our main garden is just shy of 7,000 sq ft. In my experience the past 6-7 years, I have found a lot of what you're saying to be true. It is more work, yes.. we grow and chop quite a bit of our mulch materials, in addition to the crops. It also requires planting everything by hand, like you said. We haven't had much issue with weeds since we started, so that's good. The worms are definitely happy, too. It is a slow building process like you said.. it took us about 3-4 years to really transform our soil in a major way, but it's wonderful stuff these days. Just thought I'd share our experiences.. Delaware, clay soil, zone 7a.

I was born & raised in central Florida and learned to garden there. I was in the service and along with my current employer I have moved around. Texas, South Dakota, Minnesota, Indiana, & Kentucky. I'm now in the Savannah, Ga area. I found that due to the richer soils, lower temps & humidity, fewer insects & diseases, that gardening up North is a piece of cake compared to the deep south. And they are usually the first to give "expert" advice about gardening because every year they have a killer garden. That is, till they move to the deep south. Seen it time time again while in Florida. They move to Florida & try their no till or back to Eden gardens, and either have to adapt or get out of the game. It always tickled me when living in SD & MN, how they would complain about the humidity & insects during the summer lol. Folks don't know what humidity/insects is!

I have a couple observations and differentiations on gardening styles that you discussed between till and no till. One major difference or concern between the styles is permanent beds. No till centers on permanent beds and permanent walkways. Amendments are conserved to grow space only and not ‘wasted’ on walkways. Some consider a power harrow as just stirring the soil and not a tillage practice. I think that’s splitting hairs; better view point is that style is a hybrid between till and no till. I think some of the haters on your garden style and bare dirt also misconstrue what is going on. I would rather plant more rows of crops in the dream garden the way you have it setup. I would fight for smaller walkways; however, that style or desire to maximize output (a variable) on a fixed plot of land will inevitably lead to frustration due to an overcrowded garden space. It then becomes a burden and takes in my mind some of the best benefits of the garden as my escape from chaos. Ideally the canopy of the row crops would close soon enough that weeds may germinate but never truly compete with the row crops because they are shaded out. Different strokes for different folks! Can I get an alright alright alright?!?

There’s fear in the unknown; some people only know what they know and if wrong on something like garden aristocracy, what other parts of their worldview could be flawed? It’s too important not to insult you into a duel; a mentor told me never argue with an idiot because they’ll reduce you to their level and beat you with experience! Loved the show tonight! However, I did not enjoy all the ads - Seemed like there was one every three to five minutes!! Very distracting and I don't watch them anyway, but it's a pain to keep having to stop and click them off. Just sayin'. As for the no-till method, it simply does not work for me here in Central Florida. Besides all of the issues with fire ants and termites, weeds grow on top of the mulch, be it wood chips or straw, and the cost of re-mulching to combat that is cost prohibitive. Also, at my age, I simply cannot haul and spread wheel barrows-full of mulching material. Y'all know that I almost quit gardening here because of the weed and pest pressure,. Investing in my wheel hoe was the best investment I've ever made in my garden, and learning Southern gardening techniques from you folks has made a world of difference for me.

There are a lot of "armchair gardeners" out there. I am two years into being a market farmer here in Texas. I watched the Eden guy, Curtis Stone and so on, just like most people trying to learn things. We tried the wood chips and it was a nightmare! Every region is different and I am in Zone 8B like the Hoss guys. I am a one and a half person operation and try to limit unnecessary work. There is no way I would be able to mulch and move wood chips around etc.. We invested in commercial land scape fabric for our paths and some that we plant right into, from the holes we made in the fabric. If you wanted to get an idea of how we farm our 1/4 acre, watch Starting a Farm in Central Texas-Episode 7. I don't make videos anymore as I am too busy, but Hopefully I can help someone that is starting out in our climate. Ciao!

Great show, guys. A “non-chemical” tip on adult Squash Bugs is adding 1TBS of Dawn dishwashing liquid to a gallon of water. It kills adult squash bugs in seconds. You HAVE to spray it ON the bug, not just on the plant. I haven’t had a problem with it burning Curcurbits, but I did see it burn some other plants, so do a test on a small area of the plant before you spray the entire plant. I have a video called “Squash Bugs Must Die”. In it you will see the squash bugs… ADULT squash bugs… Dying within 10 or 15 seconds after being sprayed. Check out the video on my KZbin Channel. I hope that might help someone with their squash bug problem. Later, alan

Could be that it didn't get enough phosphorous or potassium initially. Have seen that happen before. Also, make sure your pH is in the right range. A bad pH can drastically affect nutrient uptake.

To till or not to till... I'm still learning but I do follow the soil food web by Elaine Ingham. Check out "Soil Biology" on my channels playlist. Gabe Brown does more of the production no till but explains it very well. Because of my health condition I need very nutrient dense crops. Ms. Ingham says to keep your soil covered at all times but how is open to interpretation. Grow your main crop but instead of weeds plant your pathways with a low growing crop. Only 2-4" tall. she gave a list of plant types but it was for California. I have yet to find types that are best in the deep south. Our situation here in south Alabama is keeping the soil cool and not forming a crust. Cant get straw because they kill it with round-up so this year i just covered my whole garden with those dang live oak leaves. I know they are a pain to breakdown but so far I'm mighty impressed. It's holding water, keeping the soil cool and so far no weeds. With you and Mr. Danny I like to armchair homestead Just for learning practices. I think Mark from "I am organic gardening" is the best for your size. Yes he does what I call "Tickle Tilling" but it seams to work. But the bottom line is If we get the soil right most if not all the other problems take care of themselves. All I use is BoogieBrew.net/GYG compost tea and that's it! You guys are great keep making great videos even though your from Georgia...Hah payback lol
@gardeningwithhoss

Yeah that "low growing crop" is tricky down here, because anything will go to seed pretty quickly, or either grow so fast that it requires constant mowing/maintenance. I could see where it would work in more milder climates.

I agree. I till and no till, but tilling and cultivating are not the same...not that you don't know, but you were using the terms interchangeably. Also, "no till" is big ag and "no dig" is small backyard or market scale, but used interchangeably. I say both...and will use no till here. So, further explanation is; no till is leaving the soil structure in place for microbes and healthy soil biology to live and release the nutrients in the soil without having to add it synthetically. In no till, cultivating or tilthing should only be done in the compost layer. The compost acts as a mulch while feeding the soil. Tilling inverts and mixes the soil structure, breaking microbiologic pathways and allowing sunlight to kill the life in the soil. Now, personally I would love to do all no till. However, as reality has it, I can't for reasons mentioned here. Nut grass, bermuda grass, grubs, and fire ants. So, I do a little bit of everything with the hopes of moving towards no till or bettering my practices. I experimented with Back To Eden and 5 years later, I still can't get the grubs and ants out of my garden. Growing root crops near that plot is a nightmare. I will say, it did eradicate the nut grass in that section, but I tremble with fear to till it, so for now it will be tarped. I use a tractor and chemical fertilizers, when needed (haven't used any in 2 years) as well as tons of compost and manures (maybe 150,000lbs this year). Everyone should do whatever they need to for their situation, but also willing to ask questions and answer questions to help educate everyone on best practices and practical applications. I've put down a $#!+load of cardboard, carpet, and other mulches that didn't work. I've spent thousands of dollars on experimental gardening that hasn't worked. I could have saved time, money, and headaches had I just stuck with tilling and 10-10-10, but my convictions won't let me or I'm stubborn. However, I think there is always a better way, or maybe I should rethink the "always".

What is that recipe for those cucumbers? I pruned my squash last year to expose the flowers I think it helped but it was not a good year for squash for anyone last year because of bugs. I do raised beds because I am 71 and just don't want to till anymore.

Sometimes I am lazy and instead of scraping or using tape to get squash bug eggs off leaves I just rip that little section of the leaf off and leave the rest of the leaf there. Am I doing more harm than good in doing this?

Hoss Tools then do this every year since goat heads have a 7 year life cycle? After I am done with setting and planting the garden I will order some tarps from you. By doing this skip ground cover for a few years and just do soil amendments and drip tape would be the best bet in this situation.

1. Hinojosa is pronounced Hee-no-ho-sah. 2. I honestly don't have the energy to try to follow all the rules, methods, and practices of "No-Till" gardening. I don't nuke my garden as my daddy did. I try to be mindful of the land, I try to not trash it. If not having mulch slathered all over my garden makes me a bad person then I can handle that. I was also raised under the idea that there is more than one way to skin a cat. 3. I do not remember y'all ever claiming to be the end-all, be-all of gardening guruships. Since I do not believe you have ever claimed the be the Grand High Poobah's of the Sacred Garden then I see no reason for posters to be negative. We are all just people trying to grow some veggies. Y'all offer tips. Some might work in a given situation, some might not, and at the end of the day you are sharing your knowledge in the hopes that it helps someone. It's all good! 4. Great show! Thanks for posting it up, I got several rows done of a sock I am knitting while I watched it.
