When seeds were all gone online and in the stores this spring due to the pandemic demand, and I wanted to try southern peas for the first time, I planted a 14 ft row of black eyes peas from my pantry. I learned that the bumble bees love them. This is the first time I have seen bumblebees in my garden. Carpenter ants and a garden rats also took up residence among the bushes and pods. I had to get rid of the rat. I picked the pods as they dried out, and shelled them. Altogether it produced about 2lbs of dried black eyes peas that looked just like the grocery store ones I had planted. Probably not a kosher method, but it was the most fun of the garden this summer.

Great to hear! We love southern peas, aka "field peas."

Greg has a great point on the sweet potatoes because I keep struggling to cure them. I have usually planted late. I grow a lot of purple ones from the store. They volunteer every summer now, even though I’m in zone 8.

I grew the South Anna butternut squash. 8 plants. I planted them a little late. They have been through hurricane Laura and Delta. Doing wonderfully!. I have provided for 6 families plus mine and have been picking huge squash with great flavor. I am up to 4 laundry baskets full since the end of August and I am not even halfway finished picking! No bugs, no powdery mildew, no fertilizer and have not watered since I planted them. 👍

I've grown bell peppers for years, but this year I experimented with six poblano peppers. they did very well! Love the mild spice.

Try squeezing about 6 limes in that size jug and sweeten it with Agave nectar. You’ll love it, lime really compliments the Hibiscus

My corn was my worst and best thing this year. First corn planted in April (8b) had 10% germination and tasseled at 4ft tall, and small ears. Tested soil, Amended with lime, Sevin granules, and triple 20. Second planting of corn in May. 95% germination, 7 ft stalks, 5 to 6 ears per stalk. 1st seeds from Lowes, 2nd seeds from Hoss. Also this is my first year for drip tape and it was a "Game Changer".

Question for next week's show: Can Greg get a sound check before you start recording? Love y'alls show but Greg always sounds like his mic is off or too far away. I got my first seed order from ya'll this week, fast service and well packed. Thanks

First year growing Poblano peppers; they are large like bell peppers which I have production problems with each year. Not this poblano plant! I must have gotten about 35 good size peppers before the frost finally hit last week. Zone 5a, growing in raised beds. Super excited to grow that one again next year.

Thank you for this great informative video. I'm in Texas, about to relocate from an 8 zone to a 5! I have been stocking up (from seeds, fertilizers, trays, and harvesting rubber bowls) and building a nice seed library from you and was wondering if I would still be able to get use of my seeds in NE. The only seeds I need to change is onions! LOL Better order some Long Day Varieties from your website!

Question to the show regarding onions: If I'm growing onions in the designated "intermediate area" of the country, but the plot on my property is located down deep in the holler where the sun don't come across the mountain until 8 or 9 a.m,, such as mountain areas of Appalachia, then should I be growing short day onions and will they likely respond better to the reduced daylight?

Interesting. In that case, you might want to try short-day onions and compare them to the intermediate-day ones.

My favorite new veggie that I grew this year is bok choy. I love it but need more ideas on how to cook it. On another note, I want to improve my onion growing. It gets too cold here to over-winter onions, but I want to make sure and order my seeds before you run out of stock. When will the new seed inventory be available? Will you be selling the nesting onions in the spring?
@gardeningwithhoss
@gardeningwithhoss 3 жыл бұрын
We won't have the nesting onions in early 2021, but we have planted a huge plot so that we can hopefully have enough to sell in fall 2021. As far as the large onions, we have fresh seed stock right now.

Would love to know if you have any tips on growing leeks. I've been reviewing a lot of your past shows but mostly just hear they are easy to grow. Sadly, for me that has not been the case. I am in zone 10b (SoCal coast) and I've never gotten them fatter than a pencil but further north up the cali coast they grow amazing leeks. Not sure if it is a zone issue (too warm), if it is because I've only grown the single seed variety sold from the big box stores, or something else (soil type or pH). Is there something I'm missing to get them to fatten up? I've previously tried planting late fall like now and also around Feb when it is our coolest to see if it is a soil temp issue but still no success. I do love to eat them and would love to be able to harvest from my garden rather than the grocery store. Have really been enjoying your show.
@gardeningwithhoss

They are heavy feeders, so they'll want plenty of water and nitrogen. Our Ammonium Sulfate works well on them. Also, you need to "hill" them to get the big leeks.
