I did the Escape from Alcatraz in June and found than climbing those hills was much more challenging than I had expected. I wish I had your advice back then!

Living in Southern New Jersey, United States, there isn't an incredible number of hills, but when going on a 62 mile bike ride with friends recently there were some hills I was not used to. This video will certainly remind me to improve on climbing skills and to pace myself on my way up. Thanks for the video!!! 👍

I have signed up for a large sized triathlon in the Pyrenees. 1200m swim in 15°C lake, 71km (with 3 cols at a total of 2500m+ uphill) and then 17km trail run (only 400m+ on the run). Im confident about the swim and run but the bike ride will be tough... Ive downloaded the garmin trace we will do and might try and do it beforehand to practice...😊 Just hope I can finish! 😅

Glutes are often overlooked by us amateurs. We need to make a conscious effort to recruit them on the uphills. It makes quite the difference actually, so much so that I am almost liking to ride uphill now. Almost...

I have entered a 70.3 with 1600m of elevation because I don´t have a time trial bike yet so I can compete. I am good uphill so I always pick hilly races.

My last race of the year is going to be hilly. I live in the prairies and hills are very small. I'm just hoping my training against wind and big gear workouts will good enough.Cheers

Not sure if it qualifies as a hilly race but just did my first sprint at Blenheim (totally not inspired by GTN videos...😂) and made the crucial mistake of training on flat / inside. I was surprised to see many people pushing their bike uphill. To be fair I wasn't that much faster on the bike either 😊

Best way to get ready for hills is to get out there and climb some hills.

I'm going on holiday in France, the Vosges, to climb some hills. I can quite easily cycle at 110rpm, but really lack power when riding at a lower rpm. Been going to the gym for a few weeks now, doing squats and leg presses to get stronger quads. I live in a flat area, so no climbs to practice on. Is there anything else I could do to train? Other than riding at a lower rpm?

Try some overgeared efforts whenever the opportunity presents itself- short climbs from bridges, accelerating from stopped, into headwinds (there’s often plenty of those where it is flat).

I have been riding hilly routes pretty much every day for the past 6 months - virtually with Rouvy. Yesterday I put down a bit too much torque to get started on the Ventoux - Bedoin route and ..... I snapped the chain ring from the crank arm. Reckon it was down to using too difficult a gear, but I have never known this to happen within my decades of cycling. I wont be using carbon chainsets again.
